U-21 Championship

I’m going to try and report a bit of Jong Oranje news now and then and try and keep up on their progress. I really followed them the last time around in the Netherlands and its exciting to see so many young Dutch players making so much progress. It will be particularly interesting to see the young players who had a hand in the qualifying campaign and how they perform: Vlaar, Castelen, Emanuelson, Huntelaar and Hofs. Of course the last three were more experiments by Marco van Basten after qualification was assured but that doesn’t diminish the significance of their call up.

The official squad is available on the Dutch team site at Uefa.com. Their first match is on 24 May against the Ukraine.

Have I got this right? Topping the six-team qualifying group won Jong Oranje the privilege of playing off for a place in one of two groups for the tournement itself. Tough competition!

KJH played all 12 games scoring 10 goals. Phenomenal. Hope they’re not too reliant upon him.

Please do keep us posted. It’s a great curtain opener for the main event.

Portugal is starting with quite a strog team in the Euro. At least 3 players (M Fernandes, J Moutinho, R Quaresma) were in doubt to go to Germany, and the goalie - Bruno Vale - is actually going (as 3rd goalie) after the Euro finishes.

POR is in group A and HOL in B. :-) It´s a funny format, but I´m not familiar with how it´s usually done.

How much can you tell us about the dutch U21 team, Mike? Your own feeling about it. For what I´ve read, van Basten is kinda chanelling the U21 as the mains source for the main teams to come. Like Scolari is also doing here. Scolari also left some sacred cows home, again like van Basten.
