Topscoring Award for…. Dennis Bergkamp; better late than never…
Talking about bizar football news items…. Ballerina Dennis Bergkamp will receive at long last the title and trophee for the IFFHS Top Scorer of the World 1992 (awarded to the player who scored the most goals in international games, i.e. for his country and for his club in international games)!!
It was the Honduras player Obando who received the original honour and trophee, but recently the IFFHS discovered that one of the twelve goals he presumablty scored in international games was scored against a team of entertainment artists and can therefore not be counted as a fair dinkum international goal!
Recently the proof for this mistake was found and Dennis Bergkamp will now at long last be presented with this honorary title!
Dennis the Menace – who retired from top football this summer – played for Ajax in 1992 and won the UEFA cup with the Amsterdam team.
The IFFHS is planning to conduct a small and private ceremony for Bergkamp in order to present him the trophee.
So, there you go… It takes a Son of God (no hate mail please, this is truly a nickname for Ajax players) to be able to win a trophee after he has retired.
Congrats, Dennis!
PS He is the first Dutch player chronologically to win this award, although Ruud van Nistelrooij has a trophee of the IFFHS on his mantelpiece as well. He scored the winning 14 goals in 2002 for Oranje and Manchester United.
Why did it take them so much time? Anyway, congrats to Dennis!
