Titbits…

October 31st, 2008 | By: Jan | 33 Comments »

Just to let you know, the http://eredivisie.theoffside.com has wonderful articles on the past games in the Dutch competition, focusing on AZ as the new leader!!

Come out and play!

David Beckham will move to AC Milan for a spell, on loan from LA Galaxy. Ronaldinho, Seedorf, Kaka, Beckham, Gattuso… Not bad, eh?

Feyenoord coach Gertjan Verbeek has given his players a day off. Some players came to Rotterdam to train anyway and the special police force (M.E.) was present to defend the players against all the angry, bloodthirsty “fans”. But all for naught. The hoodlums didn’t show up and the atmosphere in Rotterdam was actually pretty positive.

I would pick Pirlo. He is young and has a great right foot. If he starts missing then Beckham and Ronaldinho should step.

Man, I am so ashamed how marketing dominates football today, talent is not so important today in this sport. When could you have thought that and old player of 33 years old who is under his best level playing in a poor league like the MLS could go to such a powerful team like Milan just to sell jerseys???!!!. I mean, not even Cruyff or Maradona when they were retiring had the chance to play with the best teams of Europe because they retired in their countries and Barcelona, Milan, Madrid or Manchester didn´t hire old players just to sell jerseys and anyway Milan´s team is very old. But this playboy guy (Beckham) is so lucky, I mean, he has talent but has never been a great foorballer like many people say. But now you see why a player like Cristiano Ronaldo is about to become nominated as the best player in the world. Marketing and image are more important today than being a real talent.

That is why I would like players like van Persie, Robben, Sneijder and van der Vaart to grow more as a players because I think that actually they are real talents but I feel in my personal opinion that they need to be much stronger mentally. What happened to Holland in Euro 2008 show that our generation of footballers have plenty of talent and quality but they nedd to work in their mentality because although today´s football is dominated by marketing, media and image, the teams who win the most important titles do have a lot of talent. Example: Spain (EU 2008)or over history, Brazil. What about Portugal and England???…Well you know the story. Of course Beckham and C. Ronaldo have won the champions league with MU but they will never win a title with their countries because at their clubs they have or had plenty of stars with them but in a national team is much more difficult because you don´t train with them during the week and you have to be a phenomenon to or have a great generation in your country to win the trophies. Beckham and Ronaldo have in England and Portugal very good players but so far neither Cristiano nor Beckham have been able to put a spectacular performance in the big tournaments like Pelé, Maradona, Cruyff, Zidane, Platini and some other legends did on the big stage. (WC, EC, Copa América). Cristiano will have more oportunities because he is young and will substitute Beckham as the mediatic player in World Football and guess what….that´s is why Real Madrid want him at all costs, not because he is good but because he can sell more jerseys than Raúl, Ruud, Robben and Ramos. As I said before, talent matters second, image and marketing are more important now.

@Goose: Nice one. What did he get for that? Fecking Liverpool ruined my weekend also. Haven’t seen so much waste since Nero was emperor in Rome.

The only thing that put a smile on my face (other than Kuyt scoring) this weekend was the early game in the Prem. Everton – Fulham. Terrible game, but with a very funny episode between John Paintsil and Yakubu…watch this little clip:

http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=2TavAKpIfr4

And if there ever was any doubt about Van Persie NOT having matured at all, please have a look at the highlites of the Arsenal game. That is dumbest sending off I have seen all season. Does he even have a brain?

Man, he was watching the ball. It’s not like he did it on purpose, that show’s nothing of his maturity. Yes it was a red, but only because he actually hit the guy, if the guy wasn’t there and he got the ball everyone would have been amazed at his control.

Exactly finnster01, the way he charged at sorensen, was downright childish an stupid. This guy does not have the maturity to realise that his team is losing the game, and he needs to fight harder.
Bart, his charge was clearly aimed at Sorensen. He got upset because the goalie was teasing him, by not picking up the ball. It was a sure and clear red card, in spite of what Arsene Wenger says. He has to realise that raw talent alone is not sufficient to win matches.
Sometimes I thnk all these fragile glass dolls like Vaart, Robben, Persie are just liabilities to the Dutch team. Of what use is the immense talent, when either you get injured most of the times, or your emotions let you down in crunch matches.

Finnister- lol I have been waiting all day for you guys to comment on Robin’s red card. As a matter of fact after I saw it I turned to my husband and said “Oh man Robin, You idiot now how am I going to defend you.” I knew you guys were going to give him flack for this and this time he deserves it. What a stupid stupid thing to do. I’m just gonna sit here and let you all have at him.

Van Persie’s little shove was stupid and, yes, immature. Sorensen also made a real meal out of it though. Can you imagine athletes in other sports acting that way when players shove them? In Hockey, in Basketball, in (American) Football… they’d be laughed off the field!
However, I’d say it was only a yellow card because, although it was stupid, it wasn’t actually dangerous in the slightest. Van Persie just pushed him on the chest because he was frustrated. It happens all the time in other parts of the field (like when one team wants to take a throw in/free kick and the other team’s player won’t give them the ball), but it’s always a yellow card in those situations.

But now Arsenal are without Van Persie against Man U. Robin really didn’t think that one through. I’m losing some of my faith in Arsenal, after letting Tottenham come back to tie it in mid-week, and then just looking terrible on Saturday – I was actually depressed after watching that game!

Just saw the right highlight. :D I don’t really believe it was worthy of a red. Sure it was stupid, but still the goalie fell like a sack of potatoes. It’s not like he drop kicked him or anything.

@Bart, what would you do if you were a goalkeeper and were attacked by a moron on prozac for no good reason when you already have 16 fresh stitches in your head from last weeks game?

Van Persie is a piece of work. The lad is as talented as they come, but his head is…I don’t know how to describe it. My English isn’t good enough.

vPersie thinks hes the best player to ever live, now hes getting dissapointed (also in Oranje) and he shows us hes not a real man…he looks more of whining little girl

Great goals Goose. But I have to disagree about the red card. Had it happened in another part of the field it would almost certainly have been a yellow. But it was stupid though, so I can’t really defend it too hard.

@Finnster – come on now, he should act like a man and not role around on the ground like he was taking lessons from Dida. Sorensen even admitted he baited Van Perise into it – meaning he was trying to get him in trouble, meaning he would have no problem exaggerating it to make sure Van Persie got into trouble.

It’s no surprise fans of other sports make fun of football players so much when they act like immature little boys (Van Persie), or weak little girls (Sorensen).

With all this talk about Van Persie’s bad side, here’s a little reminder of his good side:

Let’s hope that he (and Arsenal) can straighten out and get back to this good stuff again soon!

@caleb. I totally agree with you mate. Sorenson acted like a girl. But he also has 16 stitches in his face from last week and was probably not very interested in a skirmish. He just wanted to test VanP’s temper, which turned out to be a very smart thing. Unethical and girlish, yes, but completely legal. Like it or not.

However, even an under 16 player knows that charging a goalie will get you off the field anyday anywhere. When will VanP learn?

Van Persie needs to see some headdoctors soon because we need him in 2010. He reminds me so much of a young Rooney and I can see him lose his head for Oranje when it really counts. Just like Rooney did for England. And that can cost us more than a game, it can cost a complete tournament.

@Jess: A straight red in the Prem means 3 games. So he will miss the next 3 games.

@finnster, Is it just me or was it Sorensen that taunted van Persie. It’s not fair of you to say “what would you do if you just got 16 stitches”. You know what I would do, I wouldn’t be an idiot and lower my head to nearly ground level and pick the ball up just in time. Sorensen clearly has no problem with his head because he’s doing this dumb shit himself. Oh and also van Persie gave him a little shove on the chest NOT the head. Robin got unlucky that Sorensen is such a little cunt, any respectable goalie wouldn’t do that shit anyway. So the verdict for me is that Robin should have gotten a yellow and a warning, and Sorenson got told to stop being such a baby.

@bart, our opinions on this differ just slightly, but not by much. Sorensen egged him on, but Van Persie needs to be smart enough to not fall for that crap. Taking the risk of nailing the keeper on something as stupid as that, knowing you are playing Man U around the corner, is just too stupid and risky for words. If I was Wenger, I would bench him for 3 more games after his suspension.

Imagine he did that in the last game of the group stage in WC2010, or even worse, cost Oranje the tournament by playing with 10 men in the knock-out stage? Don’t you understand my concern? The guy needs to mature, because he is still a liability, not an asset. He is a great player, but that does not mean he is above the team.
