@zandvoort blue: your words ring with the optimism only a die hard supporter can have.. you are a big Man City fan, aren’t you?
@Jan: I believe the words you were looking for are “standing ovation”, as Bart said, or perhaps just “ovation” (if the fans weren’t standing to do it). So you would say something like, “he received an ovation from the fans when he was subbed off”, or “he was substituted to an ovation from the fans”. (There we go with the English teacher in me again).

Lerkot; yes point taken altough they lost v Arsenal and both those games were in August at the very beginning of the season but ok not their first real test

Why would Chelsea want Alves?? they have great strikers already… think Man. City is overrated at the moment…Sven has done a great job but the first real test they had they got slaughtered by Chelsea!! think they will end at mid table at the end of the ride, dont think they have any change of challanging the big 4… i heared that maybe Alves is going to Man.city and that as part of the deal Samaras (who already played for Heerenveen) will return to Holland (not so sure about that story btw but thats what i heared)

Alves played terrible against Ajax btw.

Dont think deRidder is any good (and i dont like pretty boys!)…think the best change we have of a decent winger in the future is Bruins… but eh; i could be wrong

think vdVaart will stay at Hsv till the end of this season and then hell move to Spain

Alves, the exciting Brazilian striker of SC Heerenveen, is linked to Manchester City, who are willing to pay 20 Million for the neo-international. I’d say: hold your horses and Chelsea or Tottenham will come round with even more money…

Would that be the Spuds team in turmoil who are sat near the bottom of the Premiership, or Sven`s Man City that are sat proudly in 3rd place. City are a team on the up with a rich owner and only a couple of signings away from challenging the monopoly of the top 4. Alves could be the man.

@Jan: Right, Jan. De Ridder’s the man for the future. Good crossing, good dribble and doens’t get injury as easily as Robben and Van Persie. I still remember that he played so good in the U-23 final.

Also, I don’t think there’s really an English phrase for it. I’ve always just seen mention of a player being applauded as he comes off, without a special phrase of its own.

True…but De Ridder has had a second life in Spain already, after Ajax and experienced the tough side of being a talent. He fought his way back in Oranje U21 and is apparently doing well in the EPL (which is not going to happen if you “only” rely on your skills). So, I agree, Marco should just monitor him for now, but he could be our actual right winger…

No man, leave De Ridder alone, he’s still so young. We have overrated so many players like Maduro, Babel, Drenthe and Rigters and they also think they’re that good but it’s sad to see their situation right now.
