The “van Basten effect”

May 19th, 2006 | By: Mike | 18 Comments »

That’s an interesting little phrase. I really think that van Basten has had an incredible effect on the team. van Basten has taken the Dutch back to a no-nonsense style of attacking football and did so with players who have that hunger that was missing at times in the past.

yeah that’s what i think too. van basten is good, and made some good but hard choices. but the group is tough, if netherlands get passed it, then it would be a great confidence boast for the youngsters, after that netherlands can go very far. Then main point is to beat sebia & montenegro!!

It will probably be Landzaat or van Bommel in place of Sneijder but other than that I think that’s pretty likely.

if we want to watch a beautiful holland on the pitch, then sneijder and van der vaart should lead the midfield together to give more fantasy.

vdV and Sneijder can not play that well together, we saw this at Ajax. One of the main reasons I thought vdV left was because he and Sneijder were unable to play together.

I doubt they will both be leading the dutch midfield in Germany 06 only one of the two and i think if he’s fit it’ll surely be vdV

Now why r we assuming that the Dutch will play 4-3-3… don’t u think a 4-4-2 makes more sense?!

4-3-3 is how the Dutch play. Okay, I know there have been exceptions in the past but it tends to be an unwritten rule that the Dutch play with three attackers. Why not play to our strengths?

I don’t think 4-4-2 makes more sense at all. If it was up to me, with the players we have available, I’d play 4-2-4 just out of spite for everyone else.

4-3-3 is sort of synonimous with the Dutch isn’t it? That’s how Ajax and PSV(?) play don’t they? It’s our trademark so to speak.

:-D

Well if this had been the formation I would have taken different players. Instead of a couple midfielders I would have included Castelen and Huntelaar.

In my dreams I’ve imagined:
-Robben - van Nistelrooy - Huntelaar - Kuyt -

van Nistelrooy is a superb distributor of the ball and at times he could drop deeper and start moves. Or else the attacking could come from the outside in, with Robben and Kuyt driving into the box or putting in crosses: Huntelaar and van Nistelrooy are excellent headers of the ball.

In that formation Vennegoor of Hesselink could come in and play furthest forward. Castelen and Babel could sub for the wingers without sacrificing any pace. van Persie could be used as a deeper centre forward and with his pace he could run straight at defenses.

Thanks for asking!

Ajax used to play 3-4-3 and that makes a lot of sense. The Dutch strength has always been in their Midfield guys. You can’t play with three midfielders especially youngsters and expect to capture the midfield and not let the other team touch the ball. If you go back to the 2004, they played 4-3-3 and we saw the way they played, I’ve never seen a Dutch team playing that bad in the midfield as that Euro 2004, and that’s because of their 4-3-3…
So I hope we do good with a 4-3-3, however I think we need one more guy there…

I think it has to do with the organization of van Basten and the players themselves. Cocu, Landzaat and van der Vaart or else Cocu van Bommel and van der Vaart will do much better. The team as a whole plays well together. If you’re worried just look at the qualifying campaign.

@dutch fan
i totally agree with you, the team was disgusting in 2004 because of the 4_3_3, ajax and the dutch team used to play 3_4_3, the best ajax team in 1995 was always 3_4_3 and the famous game for holland against ireland in the playoff for euro 1996 was 3_4_3. that game made too many ppl love the dutch style, but with only three in the midfield i can’t see a good style, unless robben is going to attack from the midfield then it may work

we can also play 4_4_2,with robben ad van nsitelrooy in attack and vander vaart behind them and then sneijder cocu and maduro in the midfield, to tell you the truth i didn’t like van bommel’s performance against arsenal, i wouldn’t include him.

In fact, the Dutch and Ajax with v Gaal (and most other teams, incl PSV) play different systems in the same match. When the opponent has the ball, the strikers leave the worst passer of the opponent free. Normally, the free man in defense gives cover to the Dutch markers in the defense. Once we get the ball back, our free man (Blind in Ajax with v Gaal for instance, Koeman or Rijkaard in the ‘88 squad, Haan in ‘74) moves to midfield to give support there. As Cruyff says: most teams operate with 1 or 2 forwards, so you only need 3 defenders max! In ball possession, the Dutch play with 4 forwards. Two wide, one deep (Ruud) and one in the shadow (like Bergkamp in the past, v Basten at Ajax) probably vd Vaart. Robben can play there too. With v Persie can play left winger. In 2004, we played as cowards, reflecting the character of Dick “Dick” Advocaat.
