The Draw: Vergoossen not impressed with Fiorentina
The spectacular fixture Arsenal - Liverpool came out of the draw for the Champions League. The other three faves for the title - Man United, Barcelona and Chelsea - had more luck.
It’s certain that at least one Dutch player will reach the semi’s. Babel and Kuyt play for Liverpool while Robin van Persie plays for Arsenal. The Gunners start the first leg in their Emirates Stadium.
Man United has to play AS Roma. Last season, the Mancunians beat Roma 7-1. The second leg was ruined by severe hooligan riots. This fixture, the Italians play first at home.
FC Barcelona had a good draw. The Rijkaard managed club will travel to Schalke 04 for the first leg, Schalke is considered the weakest club in the quarter finals.
Chelsea will play Turkish side Fenerbahce. The first leg is in Istanbul.
PSV will face Fiorentina in the quarterfinals UEFA Cup. The first match is in Italy. If PSV beats Fiorentina, the next opponent will be the victor of the Glasgow Rangers - Sporting Lissabon match.
Fiorentina is currently the number 4 in the Italian Serie A. The team - coached by Cesare Prandelli - reached the quarters at the expense of Everton.
Fiorentina beat FC Groningen in the first round, after penalty kicks. Well known names in Florence are Rumanian star Adrian Mutu and Italian striker Christian Vieri. Ex PSV player Manuel Da Costa plays for Fiorentina as well. He left PSV last winter and is not allowed to play in European duels.
The other fixtures are Bayern Munich - Getafe and Bayern Leverkusen - Zenit St Petersburg, coached by Dick Advocaat.
PSV coach Sef Vergoossen stoically absorbed the news of Fiorentina being the new opponent. “Doesn’t matter. We have a chance to go through, as we would have against any opponent. We have time enough to analyze them thoroughly. We will also ask FC Groningen for some help with that.
PSV starts with an away game. Is that an advantage? “Not for me. It doesn’t really matter.”

Looks to me like well have 3 GB teams in the semis of the Cham. Leg.; Barca will have little problem with Schalke
Nice draw for Psv, FcGroningen almost beat Fiorentina in the first round but i reckon the italians have grown during the season, good thing they play away first!

I say Fiorentina will win 2-0 at home, and probably draw 1-1 away. I say this presuming that Adrian Mutu returns to action soon. Both are relatively small teams in Europe with top class goalkeepers. The difference is that Fiorentina is a very offensive team, and have a lot of fast players, who I think will be able to dictate the play between the two teams.
As for Champions League, I think Barcelona got lucky with their draw. Man U, Liverpool, and Arsenal probably would have beaten them in semi’s, but they’ll probably be up against Chelsea, which will definitly be a must watch, after the two games they played last year. I saw that since Arsenal has time to adapt van Persie back into the line-up they’ll beat Liverpool. That and the fact that they have an experienced defensive line-up and will be putting three men forward to stop Torres. Barcelona will win against Schalke unless their keeper can pull off a miracle, like against Porto. Chelsea should rap up Fenerbahce, unless injuries occur, but still have a pretty deep bench. And as much as I would like to see Man U crash and burn, if you look at what happened last year it seems unlikely.
Man U - Arsenal, Arsenal wins 4-2 on aggregate
Chelsea - Barce, Chelsea wins 3-2 on aggregate
Chelsea - Arsenal, Arsenal wins 1-0, van Persie gets tournament winner.

dirk: it’s impossible because the winner of arsenal-pool will play against the winner of fener-chelsea,and the winner of schalke-barca will play against the winner of roma-mu.

saw arsenal today. robin was replaced. he needs time to get his best. depor-real was catastrophic, very boring. i read a book and sometime watched the game but nothing happened only a one-goal by peppe. drenthe run a lot but without any result. he was replaced by robinho. sneijder was even worse than drenthe. what’s happening with them????

My bad, I knew that, I don’t know why I wrote that. I think Barce will overcome Man U, if all of their players are there, and Arsenal beat Chelsea. Rematch of 05/06, different outcome.

A bit of news on our under-17 team. We lost our first match to Bosnia-Herzegovina 1-0, but won against Norway 2-0, from Castillion, and Cabral. Castillion scored 5 goals in their first 3 matchs, and currently plays for Ajax. Rodney Sneijder played both games, even though he hadn’t played a game for them before signing his contract with Ajax.

This is what kills me. The two largest newspapers in Norway have no stories about under 17’s at all.
We don’t care about developing our talent. It is sad but true.

Which is another reason I have been a Holland fan since a kid.

Well your under-19 squad beat ours a little while ago in competitive action. But I don’t really like watching under-19. Players who are under-21 you can see in the near future playing, like what happened to Drenthe. Except for Kroos and Krkic, you normally won’t see the u-17 phenoms, becaues a big team will sign them, and put them in a development program for a couple of years. Man U is the best example. Brazil’s u-17 has two twins, one a Centre-back, one a Wing-Back, and Man-U swept in a picked them up when they were 16, before they could show the world what they were capable of. U-19’s aren’t really the best, because if they were good they would be picked up for the u-21 squad, I see it more as a u-21B squad than a u-19 squad.
