Still no Ruud

August 20th, 2006 | By: Mike | 7 Comments »

While I predicted that Ruud would not play again for the Netherlands I take no joy in that thought. He is one of my favourite goal scorers. However, my statement is still holding true and Ruud has been left out of the squad being brought together for the first of the Oranje’s Euro qualifiers. The whole squad is as follows:

Keepers:Maarten Stekelenburg (Ajax), Henk Timmer (Feyenoord), Edwin van der Sar (Manchester United);

Defenders:Urby Emanuelson, John Heitinga (both Ajax), Tim de Cler, Kew Jaliens, Joris Mathijsen (all AZ Alkmaar), Giovanni van Bronckhorst (Barcelona), Khalid Boulahrouz (Chelsea), Andre Ooijer;

Midfielders:Hedwiges Maduro, Wesley Sneijder (both Ajax), Stijn Schaars(AZ Alkmaar), Nigel de Jong, Rafael van der Vaart (both Hamburg), Theo Janssen (Vitesse Arnhem), Denny Landzaat (Wigan);

Forwards:Ryan Babel, Klaas Jan Huntelaar (both Ajax), Robin van Persie (Arsenal), Arjen Robben (Chelsea), Dirk Kuyt (Feyenoord), Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink.

Ajax contribute seven players and AZ only four. Two new boys making competitive debuts for the Dutch are Schaars and Janssen. Schaars scored one in AZ’s demolition of Breda and Janssen sent in the cross that made Vitesse’s first. Landzaat had a decent game for Wigan and might consider himself unlucky to come away a loser on his debut. Another player not included in this squad was Davids. He put in a solid and energetic performance for Tottenham against Bolton.

Why no Ruud? The match againts Portugal has showed that Hesselink can’t help the team in emergency case. Although Huntelaar is a good striker, we need another in case Huntelaar doesn’t work well.

Maybe Boussafa…or else Kuyt. We’ll see how he handles the switch to England.

amen to that ferenc, same with Kalou who was only interested in using Holland as a platform on the big stage.. why should Marco bother, we have enough decent strikers who will think its an honour to play for us… all these maroccan guys live in Holland for generations but they always remain maroccan, best they play for their one country..

btw. did any of you guys see AZ Alkmaar play (they beat NAC 8-1!!), im telling you, they play great football under vanGaal :they have a great change of becoming champions this year (they were the last club outside Ajax, Feyenoord, Psv, to win the dutch title in the early 80’s)

Don’t really concur with the Moroccan guys have lived here for years, but don’t want to play for the country…

Where exactly did Khalid’s parents come from? You know the guy who played with every ounce of energy he had in June?

And let’s not forget that the Netherlands is stealing a good player from Canada the same way. (So did the brits of course)

But it does strike me as a bit bizarre that I’m not seeing much discussion from Van Baasten about his bench. Because that’s a big key out there now.
