Seedorf most successful in European cup

May 23rd, 2007 | By: Jan | 4 Comments »

Clarence has number four! For some time he had to share this honor with some other players you may have heard of. One Johan Cruyff (3 x as a player with Ajax in 4 finals), one Frank Rijkaard (2 x AC Milan, 1 x Ajax), Barry Hulshoff, Wim Suurbier and Piet Keizer. Edgar Davids played four finals as well, but only won one of them (with Ajax).

Clarence was already somewhat unique since he won the cup three times with different clubs (Ajax, Real Madrid, AC Milan) so he must add something to the teams he plays in…

Still, he is not yet the best in Europe. Team mate Paolo Maldini won the cup 5 times (all with AC Milan of course) and since the 38-years old will add another season to his resume, who knows where he’ll end :-). Francisco Gento still has the lead though, with 6 Cups won.

“It’s unbelievable,” shouted Seedorf after holding up the CL Cup,”I play eleven seasons of CL football and won it four times! I am so proud! And they’re all different too. I can’t describe with words what I feel now.” The lucky free-kick was the key-moment in the match. “It wasn’t easy for us. Liverpool is a very tight and well organized, tough opponent. The lucky free-kick helped us through. This was not an easy year. We started rusty and we really needed to work hard to get ourselves through it. The explosion of joy will follow when we get back to Italy.”

Clarence Seedorf’s season ends here. He won’t travel with the Dutch team to Asia. The 30-year old explains why. “My most important Cup will come in a few days. I’ll be a first time father.”

Oops, I need to correct myself. I just found out that Clarence has two daughters already! Living in Holland (with his ex-wife??). After the match he dedicated this cup to them (as well :-) )… As some sort of afterthought, it seems. Anyway, a slap on the wrist for your roving reporter who didn’t have all the facts. Shame on me!

I find Clarence good player, he was good against Bayer Munich and Man Utd but not good against Liverpool. He can be very good but also very bad. But winning 4 cups doesn’t say much. WIm Suurbier won 3 cups and he was not a good player.

This is the kind of players the team should be built around.
