Seedorf: lost CL finals was the best…

February 13th, 2008 | By: Jan | 16 Comments »

Seedorf will bypass Frank de Boer on the list of Dutch players with the most European games behind his name. Against Arsenal, the 31 year old international can equal De Boer’s record of 127 duels.

Seedorf played 16 duels with Ajax, 25 with Madrid, 17 games with Internationale and 68 games with AC Milan. Seedorf’s debut was in 1992, as ball-boy in the UEFA cup finals against Torino. “I was so impressed by the atmosphere in the stadium. It was an honor to be ball-boy and at a European finals as well.”

Seedorf has gotten used to European finals. He won four CL cups (Ajax 1995, Real Madrid 1998 and AC Milan 2003 and 2007). “The win with Madrid over Juventus (with Edgar Davids) was special. We played Italian, defensive and we didn’t give anything away. But it was Madrid’s first in 32 years, so pretty special.”

The best however, was the one Seedorf lost. “That’s so weird, but my most special one is the one we lost against Liverpool. I still can’t fathom what happened. Right before Liverpool scored the 3-1 we had a major chance for 4-0. It was like a Hollywood film, wasn’t it?”

What do we need in the national team?. We need winners = Seedorf.
Seedorf can give Holland a winning mentality and calm in tense moments.

What dont we need in the national team? We dont need whiners = Seedorf.
Seedorf can give Holland a losing mentality and suck in moments that arent tense.

Dude has never been around when we’ve played our best football.

As much as I admire Seedorf’s performances and record at Club level, I honestly cannot rembember too many games for the national team where he replicated anything near to his club form.

Sad as it is, my most enduring memory of Seedorf in international football was the penalty miss against Turkey (I think?) in one of the qualifiers. It wasn’t a narrow miss either and the look on his face, as well as those of his team mates, when the ball went sailing over the bar said it all.

I was actually there when he missed the penalty against France during the EC96 ..(and yes Jerome, the other one was Turkey away). i hated him eversince … but lately he has matured so much that now i think hes one of the more sympathic players in oranje, i really like his (new) attitude… BUT

it has to e said that he never really performed in Oranje … i remember one or two good games (Belgium away where he scored a brilliant goal) but mainly very poor performences…. dont think Seedorf will be in the starting line-up during the EC…think hell be benched most of the time

Lerkot; think youre a bit too harsh on Clarence…he really has changed his attitude altough i do agree that he has had very few good performences in Oranje

It’s strange that he cannot perform well in the national team. He is almost always the first eleven at Milan (90% of Milan games, I guess). I think at the club level, he is surrounded by players that eliminate his weakness. At Milan, for example, there’re Gattuso, Pirlo, or Kaka. I don’t know for sure, it is just a guess.

That’s right Bobo, in Milan he has a free role. In the Oranje concept he has tasks and Seedorf isn’t that disciplined to perform them well. Every coach had problems with him in Oranje.

I think as a professional footballer, Seedorf must be able to adapt to the task given by a coach. At the club level, he is given a free role. But, in the national team, the coach will not give him that role. However, he is still remembered as a good footballer, winning the CL trophies with different clubs.

Jan is right .. Seedorf had several changes to perform well … he never did .. think he can only play ‘ the milan’ way on midfield, with lots of freedom…no place for that in Oranje…i do hope hell be selected goes i think that now, the grown up Seedorf can bring something to the team…even as a sub

Ze dorf -agreed goose very matured now with plenty of experience in top football.
but i am suspecting one thing.
we will not get gold with ze dorf-i am dam sure abt that.
why coz if had any ability
he would have won the 1998 wc and 2000 ec with lengends like frank, davids etc.
through selecting him definitly it will affect the team spirit and it will leads to diversity in the team.
we have luxuary in his positions
roban, vaart, znijder, etc so there is no place for him at present.
i think our new talents like afaleey and castelen have more penetrating power than him.
he is fit for milan but not fit with current orange but he was fit with our past generation.
he will not make any wonder for orange in EC2008
(remmebering the games (portugal*holland 2004 EC)(italy *holland EC)(brazil *holland 98)
belive in the new blood and forget abt the past

@jan and @ goose i have a quetion to you both.
Give me the players with penetrating ability(players who can threarten the opponent when they touch the ball)
Give me the match winners of orange?
i think against italy most probably their strikers will not get goal.but i think matarazi or grosso may score one goal with that goal those ashole may hold us.
italian diffenders should suck infront of our dancing legends this my wish against italy but most probably 1-1 draw
they should spend minimum two diffenders for RVP
they should spend minimum two diffenders for RVV and roban
they should spend minimum two diffenders for castelen
we need such kind of players then we can think abt EC or WC like brazil.
but we are played with kuyt, makay, jaliens, etc ha ha wat a pitty

@Tiju; those players are; vPersie, vdVaart, Sneijder … these are the players with great attacking vision, they are the players that should make the difference for us….they, together with vNistelrooij are our matchwinners, the rest should play to serve them

actually dont think Makaay will play at the EC, same maybe goes for Kuijt…not sure about Kew Jaliens….

after the Croatia game im pretty positive (thats football, nice and opportunistic, haha)

dont be too negative Tiju .. well have a fair change against those basterds in blue!!

Seedorf has always been sort of the God in the Dutch national team; pretty much everybody believes in him but he just doesnt exist. Back in the days, it seemed like he was expecting to be the playmaker and that all the balls should go through him, and when they didnt, he got lost. Now its sort of the reversed, the other players seems to hope that he should do all the work when he’s around, but he cant.

Goose is right. RvN is always lethal, always threatening. They need 2 people in his zone. The midfielders will need to “picked up” in their zones. Marking Raf, Wes and Robin is suicide, so the opponents will have to play zone defense. Robin has the most effective penetrating abilities (starting speed, explosivity and control over ball when running). If Robin is injured, only Robben comes close to Robin’s skills. More so than Clarence.

With De Cler/Melchiot/Kromkamp we also have penentrating flank players, but the risk will be do know when and when not to come. The Italians/Romanians will love to play counter attack against us. Heitinga in top form is also a player who can and dares to move up to midfield.

If that “playing between the lines” game and our timing is on, we can take on any team in the world, with our skills. If it’s off, we are vulnerable and quite frankly, mediocre. Because we lack the tough as nails modern defenders to keep the ship afloat when needed. Although we do have pretty decent goalie….
