Robben: Uncertainty at Real Madrid

August 14th, 2009 | By: Jan | 59 Comments »

Robben: “And then Wes said, where’s your coach Barack O-ball-a? Hahahaaa….”

“All the spotlights are on Real Madrid, it seems. It drives me crazy,” Robben says with a big sigh. And that sigh didn’t have anything to do with the long trip the ex-Groningen player had in his legs. Last Friday, Sneijder and Robben were in Toronto, on Sunday in Washington DC and Tuesday they landed in Madrid, to quickly travel forth to Amsterdam. “You can imagine how fit I will be, though… But, it’s always fun to be back in Holland.”

The winger – who came on against DC United and scored and prepared another goal – was happy to be away from the madhouse. “It’s all uncertainty at Real at the moment. You read and hear all sorts of stuff and things can change by the day. All Dutch players will need to determine where they stand. I’m not sure where I am at. Anything can happen before August 31.” In the Spanish press, articles were saying how Robben isn’t allowed to leave, after his impressive games on the America trip. “Yeah, the press was highly positive, but I’m not focusing on that. I only focus on football and training. That’s where I can make the difference.”

“In principle I want to stay at Real,” says the former Chelsea and PSV player. Robben oozes confidence. “I think that I belong there based on my skill and qualities. But, there’s also other forces at work, such as politics. There are absurd many good players for a maximum of three spots.”

What will determine whether Robben will stay? “My goal is to play as many games as possible. Preferably in Madrid, but I’m happy to look at offers. There was one concrete offer on the table, but I didn’t want to move to that club. Real Madrid is my level and I don’t want to take a step back.”

Like Royston Drenthe, Wesley Sneijder is confident about his decision. “I’ll stay. I have had a good talk with the coach and it’s clear to me. I’m confident. The coach told me I will play a significant number of games. I am a Madrid player and I will remain a Madrid player. There will always be competition at big clubs but I won’t run away from that. My advantage is that I can play at many positions. I haven’t played a lot due to a slight hamstring issue.”

Rafael van der Vaart is packing his bags. “This is really weird. I have a deal for four more seasons, but it’s all over red rover for me. But I want to play football, so I’ll leave. But it needs to be Spain, Germany, Italy or England. Those are the top competitions for me. But I can’t tell you anything right now. Nothing is concrete. I do hope to be able to say something about my future soon.”

V.d.Vaart and V.Persie usually do very well together. And about Braafheid, De Jong etc. I wouldn’t start to riot jut yet after only the very start of the season. V.Gaal said he demanded more tactical security from his defence, i figure that is why Braafheid isn’t starting right now, he made few tactical mistakes against England as well, that is the only real weakness he still has. But if he picks it up, he’ll be in the team in no-time.
BTW Michel-olivier, I’ve been dreaming about Netherlands-Belgium-Luxemburg teaming up more for ages, as someting like the United Netherlands, lol. Cause that would mean roughly 60 % more talent to choose from, since that would be about 28 million people instead of 16/17. Of course orange would stay the primary colour, along with the lion as symbol(Flanders have a lion too), but red is also in our flag so, the rest of the kit could look more in style of the Belgian team.
Though if it ever happens it won’t be soon. Still in my further possible political career if I ever get the chance i will do what i can to make it happen. That, plus Benelux competition :) .

Could u imagine already having the option of both dutch and Belgian players like Vermaelen, Dembele, Verthongen, Kompany, v.Buyten and in the future Eden Hazard for instance.

I have found a well balanced team:

—————————–stekelenburg————————–

—–Vanderwiel——maduro——–vanbommel——–braafeid——-

——————-DeJong—————–sneijder—————–

—–Kuyt—————-vanpersie——————-robben——–

————————-huntelaar———————————

I would have van bommel act as a liberpo who would move up front to support the midfield. I chose kuyt over affelay because hes a fighter who recuperates the bal. hes tough and strong and we need a man like him when playingphysically strong teams like england or germany..huntelaar upfront although i would like to see van persie there with van der vaart as number 10.

I like that line-up Marc. Just watched PSV barely beat Ajax. What a shame Suarez is not Dutch. He is a top player. Urby did very well too. As for Ajax, until they fix the defense, things won’t change. Although Ajax was robbed this time (free kicks galore for PSV including 2 that led to goals, a penalty not given and so on), they really need strong defenders. Far too porous> I still believe we will be champions though.

no marc (about line up)
1-van der wiel couldn’t play for holland because he did not have the level
we must put on strong defenders (heitinga will remain first choice and for me acted marvellously against england despite his only mistake;other choice marcellis )
2-stop talking about vbommel in central defence because he never played in that position and will never be consider for
3-i don’t think braafheid will be first choice because he will not play too much with bayern
4-stop talking about sneijder as a defensive midfielder we need strong players in that position (martin jol also stated that ) look back at ec against russia when vaart-engelaar (playing on that position )simply disappeared against arshavin and co
5-i would never pick huntelaar as the main striker kyut is far better hunt did nothing against england; nothing against inter ;nothing against juve…
6-you should also consider elia he has been shining for hamburg.

@fares

1. As an Ajax fan I can safely say v.d. Wiel is a better right back than Heitinga. I never liked Heitinga much while he was at the Arena, and I like him even less in the national squad. I don’t know what england match you watched, but he looked like crap pretty much the entire game.

2. Van Bommel probably won’t ever play CB, but it would be a good thing to try. Rijkaard played DM and CB as well so it’s not unheard of.

3. Don’t draw conclusions after two games. Van Gaal has clearly stated that Braafheid is part of his scheme, and Van Gaal has always favored Dutch players in the past.

4. Sneijder is completely different when it comes to DM than v.d.Vaart. Raf is more creative in the attacking side, but Sneijder is waaaaay more ball-hungry. Think about the Scotland game where he was winning the ball back like crazy. Sneijder + van bommel or Sneijder + de jong would both work well I think. Slightly poorer defensively as compared to bommel + jong, but much stronger offensively.

5. Kuyt doesn’t do well as lone striker. Plays much better on the right. Huntelaar is lethal if he gets the ball in the box. It’s the three behind him that are supposed to get him the ball there. Huntelaar doesn’t often create his own chances, but when he gets the ball in a good position he scores. His stats are pretty clear for Holland.

6. I think Elia is also a great prospect. Will be interesting to see how he develops the next couple of months.

@Marc, I like most of your lineup, but I think the first thing VM should try is to replace Ooijer with Maduro (or Boula) and see how that goes.

V.d.Wiel is in nature a better RB than Heitinga, whether or not he is better at defending isn’t obvious.
About Braafheid, see my previous remarks, that’s the situation now.
It is probably too late to try v.Bommel as libero.
Sneijder is not defensive a good midfielder, Kuyt does more physical work which makes him inevitably look more involved, yet as a goalscorer, Huntelaar is still a better striker inside the box.
Elia=best performing talent right now, before Afellay and Babel, yet we should wait and see if those 2 improve in next months.

heitinga suck at lb, his too slow. we have no hope of winning the wc if his playing in that position.

@Alex
not a benelux team, maybe a dutch team with a few flemish/dutch speaking belgian players.

1- heitinga is now the best rb in holland (vdwiel and the ajax defence are horrible) we should choose players who are strong DEFENDERS
2-i will no more speak about bommel because he will not play in that position and besides he is a bit slow and couldnot resolve the problem
3- gio will certainly remain n1
4-look back at ajax vs arsenal in champions league and u will understand why both vaart and sneijder could not play defensive mid (they where completely overshadowed by the physical strength of the opponents..)
5- huntelaar is tto slow too lazy i watched him with milan what a difference with pato inzaghi is even better than him he should be benched for holland the same that been did with makaay in feyenoord
6- we agree on elia
afellay was aaaaawful against england and is completely out of form with eindhoven
if i was van marwijk or if van basten was still our trainer we would have considered surely players like vlaar,de guzman, wijnaldum, FER and maduro.

psv-ajax was a very interesting game. unfortunately, ajax’s tactics was too simple – kick the ball to suarez and he will do something. i don’t understand that ajax’s best player is a uruguayian guy. with all the youth system tradition ajax should produce talented strikers. actually the team is quite crap – only suarez, emanuelson, van der wiel and stekelenburg are european top level players, the rest is quite bad. i missed oleguer – is he injured? psv was the better side, especially dzsudzsak (a hungarian guy :D ) and bakkal. affelay was ok. they were more constructive and faster than ajax. i’m not happy with the result.

I can’t believe that Babel has gown downhill so much. He was so dynamic, dangerous and always going straight at goal in the past. Now he is uninspired, poor technically and even slow. I don’t get it. He really should get out of Liverpool and hope to regain his confidence otherwise it will be too late. It already may be too late. I hope it is a lesson for others in the Dutch league who think they can go and become starters in other leagues.
Regarding the RB issue, I like VD Wiel better than Heitinga. Heitinga should play CB along Mathijsen or Boula. Remember Romania at the Euro, there was the best center defense we had in a long time with Heitinga and Bouma.
As for PSV-Ajax, I agree with Ferenc. I would rather lose with the players from the youth system than Enoh, Cvitanich (can someone explain to me why we have him on our team? he is terrible), or Suleimani. Give me Donald, Anita, VD heijden etc. Play the youth. I do think Jol will give these young players their chance. He did it at Tottenham and Hamburg. I am sure he will with Ajax.

I agree about Babel going downhill. He needed to get out of Liverpool and now it may be too late for him. It seems like Liverpool just has no idea how to coach talents to become better players. Dirk Kuyt didn’t need to be coached becaused he is a self-made man but Babel is the type that needs to be coached and mentored to make the best use of his talents and this apparently hasn’t happened at Liverpool.

Whenever I watch Babel, his talent is obvious but he seems to have no idea of what’s going on around him. Whenever he gets the ball I just watch him put his head down and then count the seconds until he runs straight down a blind alley and gives the ball away. He rarely disappoints.

Until Babel can improve his play, he should be dropped and more time given to Affelay and especially Elia.

Thank god all the fans finally agree on dropping Babel, now all we need is vMarwijk to agree as well.

Is there anyone out there that still wants to give Babel more chances for Oranje?

Man was he crap again. I wonder when Benitez will give up on him. He’ll probably not start the next game and then it can take quite a while again.

What the fans say about Sneijder (theoffside.com):

Is Welsey Sneijder Still Needed By Real Madrid?
Yes! Why Wouldnt A Team Need A Player Of His Caliber!?! 45% (85 votes)
Yes! But Only Because The Squad Needs Capable Backups… 23% (44 votes)
No! He Is Not Skilled Enough To Be The Playmaker Of The Team 4% (8 votes)
No! The Recent Arrivals and Current Squad Make Him Useless 15% (29 votes)
Give A Canterano A Chance For Once! Give Me Granero Damnit! 13% (25 votes)

Only 4% thinks he’s not good enough! And that with his latest performances of last year is definitely not a bad score. I guess he must be pretty good. :)

I think Sneijder will move to Inter finally. The only club who is very active to get him is Inter.
