Rijkaard the best at Barca

January 14th, 2008 | By: Jan | 33 Comments »

Last Saturday, Frank Rijkaard won his 105th win with Barcelona in the Primera Division. Rijkaard is on par with Rinus Michels. He had already passed Van Gaal as Blaugranas coach. Van Gaal coached 133 matches and won 72. Johan Cruyff remains at the top, El Salvador coached Barca 306 times and won 183 matches.

Relatively speaking though, Rijkaard is the best coach of all four Dutch Barca managers. He won 61% of the fixtures with Barca. JC is numero dos with 59% of the matches, Van Gaal won 54% and Iron Rinus 51%. JC won 4 titles, Rijkaard and Louis won twice and Michels once.

Coach Duels PD Zeges Winst %
1. Johan Cruijff 306 183 59%
2. Frank Rijkaard 171 105 61%
3. Rinus Michels 204 105 51%
4. Louis van Gaal 133 72 54%

Another thing…some coaches are what we call “bread-coaches”. They work for money (and ego and fame etc). Ericsson to me is like that. Trappatoni was/is like that. You don’t want someone to step in for a big paycheck only to run away again after he discovers it’s not going to be easy, you know… They think: well, this didn’t work. Damage control, let’s quickly go to the next big paycheck. You need people who have a passion for Dutch football. And that doesn’t necessarely means it needs to be a Dutchman. I know Schuster and Wenger would make loyal “Dutch” coaches. And Dick Advocaat for instance wasn’t , in my book. Louis was. But his tenure taught us that “loyalty” doesn’t win prizes either… It’s a hard one, this….

The Dutch have always been very philosophical about their football, the idea of playing beautiful football and winning (in that order) is of great importance, and winning with a Dutch coach is fundamental to this thinking. If we won with a foreign coach the victory would have something of a hollow ring.

Yeah Sacchi would be one of them, for sure. It’s just that, like in England, we expect more from a coach than winning, and I’m not just talking good play, it’s also in terms of communication and representation. Mourinho would for instance be even worse that Van Gaal or Advocaat. Mind you, Marco disappoints at this level too. Van Hanegem wrote a column last week in the AD, attackingg two reporters. He named them specifically, called them lazy numbnuts who didn’t understand football and he doesn’t want to do interviews with them. See, that kind of behaviour won’t get you the team manager’s job :-)

Guys, I agree with most of your points.

I am just feeling very frustrated as MVB is just a “dead man walking” as we say here in the US and I actually think the team would be better off getting rid of him now. At least the players would know what to expect for the future and act accordingly. I hate to see Oranje throw away a major championship just to please a legend player, yet very average coach with questionable tactics and zero man-management skills. It is sad watching.

@finnster; yes, its very sad…the one positive i can come up with is that for the first time that i can remember Oranje has qualified for a major tournament and DOENST see itself as favorites … here in Holland its useally Hosanna all the way, we in Holland always see ourselfs as the commings champions…not this time….

maybe this will help us, maybe its only wishful thinking on my part..

here some tubes;

1. very funny dutch fans during WC06 doing german bombers in Germany!!

2. a vid on our striking force, just to get in a positive mood!

3. 2nd goal from Ruud v Lavante (from outside the box!!) with great arab commentator

enjoy!! grtz

@goose wat yarr do you know my english is not so good.i know only one language that is malayalam you know that ,nice i enjoyed your high standard comment.but remmember i am enterly different i can predict the results of organe more over i belive i am good analyst in soccer.in comming days all friends in this blog will come to know that so lets count down 1, 2 till june 9 and so on.up to29 june.
wat are all the lagging things at present
1.We donot have a motivating manager(mentor)
2.We do not have gutsy confident players(actullly we have but we are not taking them)
3So wat we need.?
4.An experienced holding midfeilder req nos-2 who can fill up this position
Davids can fill up this position with high physical hard working, who else? can bommmel?can dek saaw?can Maduro?can schaars? i will opt schaars .
diffence?
our diffence will be higly shaky against france, portugal, brazil, arjentina even ivory coast etc why?this is the time should look in to young bloods instead of going behind van bronk, ooiger those are all temparary adjustments.
WE need gutsy and talented players in MID and FRONT like castelen, drenthe(especially if roban not fit we should take drenthe)
when can we expect shaars and luirink and varrl?
i am thinking abt 23 man sqad instead of first 11.
we need equal subs in each position.
442
MY goal keepers
vander sar
stekelen burg
boy waterman
My front four
nestel rooy-hantlaar
Ryan babbel-Van persie
MY mid 8
vaart-zedorf

After Robben, now VP got a new injury http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=499562&cc=5901

What’s wrong with the youth development in Holland? Why all new stars are injury prone?

Horrible…. It’s funny… for 6$ a month (extra) I can get Setanta sports here and watch a Dutch game every week (at least) but with how Feyenoord and AZ are performing - to name a few - I almost can’t be bothered, you know…? I am not that motivated anymore. I love to watch the Meringuez, Van Persie, Vaart, Van Bommel and Seedorf but the Dutch League is getting pathetic…

True… this is surely a down period. There’s no world class players really. Just a couple of years ago, Feyenoord had Pierre van Hooijdonk, PSV had Mark van Bommel and Ajax had Zlatan Ibrahimovic… all of them players who could perform at any place. Today there is only one player like that and thats Gomes in PSV.

But I think its temporary. We wont get back to the glorys of the 90s, 80s or 70s, but we might be able to go back to where we were five years ago…

uefa team of the year 2007:

Iker Casillas (Real Madrid CF)
Daniel Alves (Sevilla FC)
Alessandro Nesta (AC Milan)
John Terry (Chelsea FC)
Eric Abidal (FC Barcelona)
Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United FC)
Steven Gerrard (Liverpool FC)
Kaká (AC Milan)
Clarence Seedorf (AC Milan)
Zlatan Ibrahimović (FC Internazionale Milano)
Didier Drogba (Chelsea FC)
Coach: Sir Alex Ferguson (Manchester United FC)

almost correct. i would change at two places: messi instead of c. ronaldo, rvn instead of drogba. and not gerrard - he wasn’t that good last year. i voted for: casillas - sergio ramos, puyol, nesta, abidal - messi, cesc, kaka, clarence - zlatan, rvn. coach: carlo ancelotti

@Lerkot; think the only change we have of seeing worldclass players in Holland is if 1. they spent their youth in Holland (Ronaldo) 2. young dutch players who will leave after playing 2-3 years in the dutch legaue (vPersie), i also hope that the big teams in the big legeaus will ‘rent out’ talented youngsters to have playing time on the field in a average competition where they will have time to learn their trade and grow…

but im almost sure that Ajax in 1995 will be the last dutch team ever to win the Cham. legeua, maybe some Uefa cups but nothing more than that….watching dutch leguea is terrible!

@goose: this is a pity. and one more thing: when oranje was great at the beginning it always was built on one or two big dutch club: 70s - they all played at ajax and feyenoord, later at psv. late 80s: ajax and psv. 90s: ajax and some psv players. ok,they all went abroad too but before going there they had been playing together for years. this is why they played so automatically because they knew each other’s thoughts. unfortunately this is no more the case, and this is one of the reason why oranje doesn’t play well.
(btw, from tomorrow until the 15th of february i’m going to be on holiday to southeast asia so i won’t write here and hope i at my return i will read lots of interesting articles and posts and - most importantly - good news about dutch football.)
