Real Madrid wants Wesley Sneijder

July 16th, 2007 | By: Jan | 10 Comments »

With Royston Drenthe (Feyenoord) and Cesc Fabregas (Arsenal) untouchable, Real Madrid has set their sights on the little big man from Ajax. Sneijder, who saw a transfer to Valencia fail, seems to be high on the list to fill the open spot on Madrid’s midfield.

Feyenoord’s asking price for Drenthe - around 18 Mio Euros (!!) - clearly says “we don’t want Roy to go” while Cesc prefers to stay in London. Sneijder however, expressed his wish to leave Ajax and will definitely not say no to the Spanish Champs.

As long as Cesc Fabregas doesn’t go, Sneijder moving out isn’t that bad at all.

I will be interested what Ajax does. They have lost three forwards(de Mul, Babel, Perez) and now potentially their best midfielder. CL qualifying is just around the corner and I would think van Geel would want to sign one or two quality replacements soon. I haven’t seen any news regarding transfer rumors for players to Ajax. Very quiet.

The only player Ajax is trying to get is Suarez, the Uruguyan striker of FC Groningen. Who will have to prove himself at the highest level. On top of that, FC Groningen doesn’t want to sell him… So… Oh, and there’s the Spanish striker Pietro (I think) that Ten Cate wants to sign. That’s all as far as I know now…

Ajax has bought Ismael Urzaiz a 35 year old striker who has played for Bilbao and scored 115 goals in 366 gams for that club..he will be used as pinch-hitter (is this actually an english word??)

think Huntelaar is getting a bit worried, if Sneijder goes (still think he wont) who will give him the crosses??

Looks like Sneijder is staying:

Also, Ajax sign Rommedahl.

Goose, pinch-hitter is a baseball term used when one batter is replaced by another. It basically means a back-up/substitute.

Pinch hitter is a replacement, but usually it is a little bit more than a replacement. A typical situation is like this: when you have one player who’s not a very good batter (like a pitcher), and it’s his turn to hit, you let another, much stronger batter come up and hit for him. So when you talk about a pinch-hitter, it usually implies a strong replacement.
