Real Champs! Ruud Injured and misses the Golden Shoe…
At halftime, the Real socios were unhappy, waving their white handkerchiefs. Real was behind 0-1 while rivals Barcelona gave Gimnastic a run for their money. By that time, Ruud van Gol was sitting on the bench, depressed and injured.
And the 0-2 seems more realistic than a 1-1. Varela missed a huge opportunity for Mallorca in the 50est minute. But, from nothing, Real re-surfaced. Subs Higuain and Reyes took Real by the hand and led the royals to their championship. Ruud van Gol, the man Capello depended on had to leave the pitch in the 30est minute with a hamstring injury, but it the man on loan from Arsenal - Reyes - was able to score the equalizer after a Higuain pass. The same Higuain kicked a corner on Diarra’s head and the ball touched the net, thanks to goalie Moya, who pushed the ball over the line; 2-1. And in the 83rd minute it was Reyes again who secured the championship with a shot from the just outside the box. The 30est title was there.
At the same time, Barcelona showed it meant business away at Gimnastic. They created opportunity after opportunity and slashed their opponent 1-5, with goals from Puyol, Messi, Ronaldinho, again Messi and Zambrotta. But, this season took 10 minutes too long for Barca, who witnessed Real winning in the last phase of their match.
Ruud van Gol was a bit of loser, though… Due to his exit he wasn’t able to catch up with Francesco Totti… He stayed at 25 goals where as the Italian star scored 26. It was not to be for Ruud…. He didn’t become the fifth Dutch striker to win the Golden Shoe…
Pop Quiz: Which Dutch strikers grabbed that title in the past???? Hint: one of them is our beloved team manager, and the other one is still active on the European stage…

Excellent guys… Kees Kist. He was an ugly mofo this guy… A typical farmers’ boy, big chin, big hands… Very strong on the pitch and a real killer. He couldn’t shoot the ball at normal pace or with finesse or placement. It was always as fast and hard as he could. That brings back memories. That AZ was probably one of the best teams I’ve seen ever… Jan Peters, Kirsten Nygaard, Pier Tol, Ron Spelbos, Hugo
Hovenkamp…
They played 4-4-2 and were a bit scuffed at for that. Tol, Kist and even Peters never really made it into Oranje. Only Hovenkamp and Spelbos…
