PSV qualifies for next UEFA cup round vs Spurs

February 21st, 2008 | By: Jan | 7 Comments »

In typical fashion, PSV qualified against Swedish side Helsingsborg last night with a 1-2 away win. Larsson’s squad started furious, with a huge opportunity after 12 seconds! Larsson and others got more chances in the first half, but their guns weren’t aimed right. To know how PSV played, it says enough that Gomez got a yellow card in the first half for time-stealing… PSV played as they play. Calvinistic. Not giving anything away. Controlling. Soaking up the pressure and going for counter-attack. In the second half, Ottman Bakal was the big man, with an assist on Lazovic first (0-1) and later scoring the second goal himself. The goal the Swedes scored didn’t really matter anymore since the first leg ended in 2-0 for PSV already.

Next up, Tottenham Hotspur.

I haven’t seen Bakkal play that much only at the EC U-21 last summer and he seems to be a real good player. Do you guys think he’ll be an important player for Dutch football?.

No, not important, but I could see him becoming a good sub, but the poor dude plays on the wrong position, really, we got lots and lots of great players there.

He seems to have “the wind in his sails” momentarily.

He reminds me of Aron Winter. Hard working, dynamic, good goal scorer, but all in all not good enough in any of these fields to really upset Van Persie, van der Vaart or Sneijder. But Winter was the ideal 12th man and Bakkal could become that easily :-).

I actually read an analysis on Bakkal. He’s being compared with Van Bommel, playing the controlling position at PSV, but chosing his moments to go deep smartly. Vergoosen thinks he could be an excellent option for one of the two holding positions in Oranje. So, there you go :-)
