Simon is absolutely right that FIFA will never give dispension in a case like this. Especially not for someone with 10 caps or so with Brazil.

There is this case just now that was turned down involving a player (forget his name, nothing great or I would have remembered) who by birth has the right to play for both Scotland and England. He wanted to play for Scotland (now I remember, he plays for Barnsley, he is the captain) but because he played once(!!!) for the Under 17 or 19's of (!!!!) England in the Toulouse tournament, which is on the FIFA calendar hence sanctioned by FIFA and therfore recognised. In addition he failed to indicate that he had a wish to play for before the other country befire he turned 21 (which he now is beyond), they turned the appeals down and there is no way he'll play for Scotland.

Gomes has no chance, no matter what he says, so he should better shut up so that the rest of the keepers can develop in peace and quiet.

@ Simon, yeah you are perhaps right. But it remains the country they were born. It such a pleasure when you see Drogba who left HIS country to france when he was 5 but still play for ivory coast. But Gomez already played for brazil? if so he can't play for netherlands!! No dispension!

Well... Kervin.. in the cases you mentioned, all of the players moved to their country when they were little kids, except Eduardo who was 15. So they all had non-footballing reasons to move to their new countries. The Gomes-case is a lot different since he moved to Holland when he was 24 or something, just in order to play football at a higher level and get more paid.

I'm against it because perhaps it's not good that european countries "steal" players from other countries just because they play in their league. (Viera, Seedorf, Eduardo among others) This should apply to all players, not just Gomez.

And in case it happens, for Stekelenburg it's just some more competition for a place in the starting line-up, and the best wins the place and in case one gets an injury, the other one can play. (the team is better) Football is a competition game, you can't just lose motivation because of competition.

He definitly has the quality to be goalie at a top club, and for Brazil. Man City said they were trying to make a big signing, maybe they're talking about him. He should try to go to Valencia though, because Koeman got rid of Canizares, and they're new goalie's not up to scruff. Stekelenburg/Waterman will definitly be keeper during 2010 qualifying, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them split the task, until we have a conclusive one.

Imagine what this happy announcement of Gomez did to Stekelenburg...
Waking up, finding the morning newspaper and that article. What?

And that: "I want to make Oranje World Champion in 2010"....

Should the KNVB try to help him with this and fail, I don't think you'll have a very motivated Stekelenburg left...

Nah, Gomez says he discussed this with management and family, well...those were lousy discussions then, they all should have said: big guy, forget it! Won't work. Go to an EPL big league club and earn the spot in the Brazilian team.

Oh, and...shut up :-)

And Velthuizen, who got selected today. True, I think Gomes is a bit better than both Waterman and Stekelenburg but the difference isnt big enough to compensate for the two years that differ to Stekelenburg and the language barrier.
