Preliminary Oranje Selection
Goose is the fastest draw… :-). Newshound…
Yes, Ruud is back in!! That’s quite something. And both San Marco and San Ruud
didn’t lose face. Good work!
But the real newbies are Boy Waterman and Ryan Donk! The AZ-players are not new to the Orange jersey of course. Both were part of that U21 team that nabbed the EC cup for the second time in a row under Foppe de Haan!
AZ Alkmaar is the royal supplier for Oranje, as we call it in Holland. Other than those 2, there are no other U21 players who got promoted. Waterman may not be present in the final group, since he is the 4th goalie.
Oranje will play a friendly against Switzerland on the 22nd of August in Geneva. On the 17th of August van Basten will present the final group.
Goalies: Edwin van der Sar (Manchester United, Eng), Maarten Stekelenburg (Ajax), Henk Timmer (Feyenoord) and Boy Waterman (AZ).
Defense : Khalid Boulahrouz (Sevilla, Spa), Wilfred Bouma (Aston Villa, Eng), Tim de Cler (Feyenoord), Ryan Donk (AZ), Urby Emanuelson (Ajax), John Heitinga (Ajax), Kew Jaliens (AZ), Joris Mathijsen (Hamburger SV, Dui), Mario Melchiot (Wigan Athletic, Eng) and André Ooijer (Blackburn Rovers, Eng)
Midfield: Ibrahim Afellay (PSV), Giovanni van Bronckhorst (Feyenoord), Orlando Engelaar (FC Twente), Nigel de Jong (Hamburger SV, Dui), Denny Landzaat (Wigan Athletic, Eng), Clarence Seedorf (AC Milan, Ita), Wesley Sneijder (Ajax), Rafael van der Vaart (Hamburger SV, Dui) and Demy de Zeeuw (AZ).
Offense: Ryan Babel (Liverpool, Eng), Romeo Castelen (Hamburger SV, Dui), Klaas Jan Huntelaar (Ajax), Danny Koevermans (AZ), Dirk Kuijt (Liverpool), Ruud van Nistelrooy (Real Madrid, Spa), Robin van Persie (Arsenal, Eng), Arjen Robben (Chelsea, Eng), Andwelé Slory (Feyenoord) andJan Vennegoor of Hesselink (Celtic, Sch).
Man, what a group!!!

3-5-2 is the worst system in the whole world. It is often much more defensive to play with three defenders than with four, cause with three, all three tend to stay in defense. If you play with wing backs, you often only have two defenders staying back.

Very true Lerkot; you can have two central defenders (Mathijssen/Boula) who stay back at all time and you can have wing backs who can attack..thats why i chose Kromkamp, he can attack..
also; almost all oppositions play without wingers so the wingbacks have much freedom
still think 4-3-3 will fit us the most

Goose,
4-3-3 would be wonderful if most of the top professionals played that. But they don’t - so it doesn’t work out so well, unfortunately.
Oranje could do a lot worse than going with it, sticking Van N and Van P up front, and having Robben, Babel or some other fast and furious guy playing on the wing in the mid-field.
I also am not a huge fan of the 3 man defensive line. Works if you have superstar defenders who can shut an area down. Not so hot, when you have OK defenders. Oranje doesn’t have a superstar on the backline now - they really have to put 4 back there. Also, to allow one of the guys on the side to go up with the ball - that’s true too.
Lastly, I hope Oranje is thinking ahead on who they will sub in. Who are the guys you want to go whole hog for 45 to 60 minutes that you can then replace.

Nah, know its a neverending discussion (know its been discussed on this blog many times) but in my heart i’m with Cryijff on this one..
just the idea that we need something to tell us apart from all the others (like you say nobody plays 4-3-3 anymore but i then reason the other way around cause then you know for sure that your opponant will have to adept to you (keeping the back at the sideline)
the one thing we always had was a great attack, i think 4-3-3 is the best system for an attacking team
sure, if you have no wingers its no use..but if you do!!
think Robben is a winger, Babal can play winger and there are some guys coming up…btw even 4-3-3 is not a static system, positions can/will and should be changed troughout the game (thats total football isnt it?)
cant wait for the first game..seems like ages that Oranje played a competitive match!

It has been ages since they had a competitive match. But you’re absolutely right that having a winger with a back to the sideline is a good idea.
Just think that defensively you need at least 4 guys in the mid-field. Transitioning to the attack one of the mid-field wingers should move up. And Robben is very good at that.
Van P did a good job at that occasionally in the WC.
One note - if your team can’t comfortably play a system - you can’t dictate the style of play in a game. It only works when your team is comfortable in its roles.

4-3-3 is the best suited, especially as a national formation. However, it should never be unalterable. Start with a 4-3-3 and if the game isn’t going your way, change things up, add more attackers, etc. I find so often 4-3-3 is the only system we ever use despite what the game situation is….
Anyways, I think 4-3-3 is the best system if we could just find some wingers who could do their job. I find often Robben wants to the superstar hero by scoring all the goals and he loses focus of his role. He needs to focus on his job as a winger (crossing, supporting, making wide runs, knowing when to attack…) and I think he will find more success then he has acheived in an Oranje shirt so far….
I think he is one of the main reasons our strikers have been left out to dry for the past two years.

For me, there’s too much focus on systems. It doesn’t matter to me. 4-4-2 or 4-3-3. I’m not religious about it. Both systems can offer great dominating football. For 4-3-3 you do need wingers who can pass their oponent and go for the line to cross a ball in. We don’t seem to have those players. We have more passers and dribblers, but Robben and v Persie always want to go through the center of the pitch. RvN is the only good header up front (although v Persie knows how to use his head too)… I don’t know. I love the passing game. High paced, quick positioning… Sometimes it’s Robben who goes wide, next time it’s the full back who ends up playing deep winger. Total Football!

So it seems both drenthe and robben to real madrid.. !!
eurosport is stating that the Liga champs have agreed to a fee of 14m euros for the new dutch hot prospect.
Im not sure where robben is in his contract discussions, but everyone is saying it doesnt look too good for him in chelsea anymore.
Im relishing the prospect of drenthe, robben and rvn, directed by dutch loving schuster.
Also on the drenthe issue, this upcoming season id say is the one to decide his future. if he fails, by next year, he’ll just be another failed hot prospect, who left home too soon. but if he manages to become a regular at bernabeu, he may very well steal emanuelson’s place for the first eleven in euro08.

i biliv playing wid 2 strikers is agood move coz we have RVP who can play as a supporting strikers n lone stiker as well i mean main striker we have kuyt who is best suited in suppoorting role n we have rvn who doesnt need any explanation
robben can play in either wing
van der vaart n sneijder wil b the two attackin MF i think rvdv can play in wings as well wat we lack is a good defensive or holding midfield i dont kno bout the players playing in dutch league coz that league i cant follow in ma tv
but wat i have noticed is dat van bommel despite being unpopular is best fitted in dat role so 4.1.3.2 wud b a nice move i guess
as far as defenders r concerned heitinga n mathijssen wud b an obvious choice and bouma cud make as a right wing we have gio as well in dat role so a right back is wat we need kromkamp? not the best in business. de cler a centre back or full back i dont kno much. dong ???
anyway in papers we r the best team in the world .. one of the best prob amongst top 3
in field …. let us see
