Goose, you read it right. Generally I think penalties are based on luck.

BUT – only if you do some standard things.

1) As a shooter – put the ball at the net. Make the goalie save it.

2) As a goalie – guess and once in a while you’ll get it.

Also like that stand not quite in the middle trick every once in a while.

BTW – Van de Saar’s biggest penalty save was actually in against the czechs’ in the 2006 qualifiers. Remember he saved the penalty – and then Oranje raced up field where Van de Vaart and Robben did a beautiful give and go for the go-ahead.

Broke the Czech’s spirit.

@Dr; ive always liked Hans van Breukelen, great attitude, great precence in goal and a real winner and since he stopped that penalty in the final against the russians (see tube link below) he my all time hero..that said, i dont really know any other dutch goalies before him, Jongbloed etc. i do not know..think deGoei was an ok goalie but true, he really never made the difference and he should have stopped that Branco free-kick in 94!!

@Goose: great news that Van Nistelrooy is back,can u pl tell the name of the selected 30 odd players against the Switzerland match.As for Van Dar Sar, he has improved a lot,but I never regarded as a great goallie.Holland never was known for gaollies with excellent keeping prowess.The guy before Sar,ed De Goye was equally lousy in some important games.By the way,Jan and Goose ,who do u think are the alltime best Dutch goalkeepers.

The last two shots van der sar saved were weak and really should have been saved. Particularly SWP’s he might as well have announced over the PA the corner he was going to sort of aim for.

Van der Sar has improved over the past years and with it his technique has changed. The bouncing has improved his quickness and he’s reading the shooters better.

PK’s are not easy when there is pressure. To improve our teams PK shooting we have a shoot out in which players pay to shoot. It’s $5 to buy your first shot, if you miss it costs you $10 for another shot for a chance to get back into the next round. Miss again it’s $20 then $40 etc. You can buy back as often as you like, or can afford, until it’s down to the last two shooters. At this point it’s real simple. If both shooters miss, or the keeper stops them the keeper gets the pot. Otherwise the winning shooter takes home the cash. Last time the pot was $560. When the pressures on you’d be surprised how hard it is to hit the net.

It is not all van der Sars fault. It would help if our guys could make a penalty shot themselves. If we only make 2 of 5, we cant expect the goalie to save 4. I put it all on our lousy penalty takers. I mean, can it really be that difficult, especially for professionals? Don’t try to finesse a corner, just belt it somewhere a bit off center and wonders will happen.

mannnnnnnnnnnnnn, thinking about the penalty kicks against brazil still hurts me, if van der sar saved a couple, holland could’ve beaten the french in the final and won finally the world cup, it still hurt me when i remember it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

there is ofcourse nothing wrong from learning of the past (as a history teacher thats pretty obvious, haha) but that doenst mean we (or just me) cant be critical of his past]
Samuel you say it is luck but in your second line you say its not really!, and i agree with your latter comment..its not luck…

how come the germans never lose a penalty shout-out, how come the english always lose theirs?? you think the german goalies are better guessers?

is it a trauma that you can get as a national team?

is our Oranje trauma with penalties over since Sweden?? remember we got our trauma due to our own bondscoach vanBasten and his terrible penalty in the semis against Danmark..hated Schmeigel ever since but that was only because i couldnt project my hate on vanBasten (as a bondscoach this is much easier altough ofcourse i dont hate vanBasten)

Before we all bash on Van de Saar for NOT savings penalties before – I’d caution people that it might just be luck.

In general, there is a little bit of psychological game with penalties, and it does appear that Van de Saar has got better.

But – it is also just luck. You kick at one of the four corners, the goalie picks on too, and you know, sometimes he guesses right.

Generally I don’t hold it against a player when there’s a save, but definitely when you miss the net entirely. That’s bad. If you’re tired just aim a bit closer in.
