Post Match Happenings

June 11th, 2006 | By: Mike | 10 Comments »

Here we have some post match analysis by Scottish guy, Andy Roxburgh. He thinks the Dutch did fairly well. I agree.

Quotes from some players of both teams. Some quotes from the coaches as well.

It would appear that the infamous “Dutch in fighting” has begun but before you panic read it again…slowly. See how Robben reacts? See how van Basten reacts? Any possible flame that was ignited was directed into a positive criticism that will be used for Friday’s match. Nothing to worry about…

Not too encouraging your new info Mike.

I really think though Van Persie had the right to get upset. Robben has a strong tendency to become selfish.. especially if he feels confident and in form.

But one thing is certain till friday: Van Basten has some work and improvements to do.

i agree with rami , van basten has too many things to improve in these five days, because as we saw yesterday, i think ivory coast is way more dangerous than serbia.
lets hope well.
van persie is right, he didn’t have the chance to show what he can do, but i blame him for saying this on the radio, he should’ve told this to van basten, that was the right way to deal with it.

In light of the upcoming match I thought this might be of interest.

There is a cool video clip about the Ivorian team as they get ready for the WorldCup I found here:

Van Basten does indeed have some work 2 do. I thought that Holland should have scored a second goal in the 2nd goal in the second half to really kill the game off – although in hindsight this could be due to Serbia & Montongero’s improved performance with the likes of Ljuboja and Koroman coming on.

Robin Van Percie is right that Arjen Robben can’t win every game by himself but 2 be fair 2 Robben when he’s in that form and that confidence sometimes as a player you can sometimes want the ball more to show of your stuff – which is exactly what Arjen has done.

Robben is right in saying that they need to make a step-up against the Ivory Coast because they will be very tricky to play against, and that Holland will really have to play well as a team.

Nice Win. Hopefully Van Basten will put a lid on any infighting between Van Persie and Robben. We cannot aford to wreck our World Cup bid because one player feels he is getting stiffed out of getting the ball, no mater how right he is. It is the coaches job to address this, not the players. This should be done in closed doors, not in the media.

The dutch played a good game tactically against a very strong and well organized team. Looks like the games in this group are the games to watch, because it seems that any team in this group can beat any other team in the group, so hold your breath things are not done in this group yet. The excitement has just began, SCG will beat Argentina and the CIV will beat Holland. It will come down to the last two games which will end in ties and the goal difference will decide it all.

I just have to say that it’s not Robben’s fault. I’m not saying he didn’t see most of the ball, I’m just saying that it was somewhat because he was better positionned than vPersie. But the real reason he saw more of the ball, is a reason that Robben can’t control. The midfielders were just passing it to Robben a lot instead of to vPersie. If vPersie has anyone to blame, it’s the midfielders, as they control who the ball goes to.

Well, it’s not just midfield. There were several situations where Robben had the ball and chose to go it alone and not opt for passing it or setting up a combination. In that respect, Persie is right: Robben was desperate in scoring that 2nd goal. On the other hand, v Persie’s positioning without the ball was not strong. There were at least 2 situation where the ball was passed in the box, and v Persie didn’t make a run to for the far post but lingered to long around the box area…

HOw can you blame Robben?. ITs not his job to get the ball to Van Persie, its the job of the midfielders. IF you noticed late in the game there was 2 or 3 times that Van Persie made a run for LanZaat and instead he made a useless pass across the pitch to Robben. What was Robben to do? Saying Robben was too selfish is like saying Kluivert was too selfish for scoring 4 in 2000. ANd yes I know one was discredited for some gay reason but still lets not hate RObben for playing fantastic football.
