Positive gleanings
There was a whole lot of positives in the tournament that left us wanting so much.
Wesley Sneijder turned in some good performances. The Dutch midfield on the whole wasn’t great but Sneijder should return home with his head held high. Look for him to retain a starting position in the team for the future.
The Dutch defence for once wasn’t a problem at all. I felt that the best performances were put in by the original substitutes, Boulahrouz and de Cler but by the last match Boulahrouz was given the start albiet in a right back role. Ooijer was a good choice for his heading ability and his experience. Mathijsen, Boulahrouz and Heitinga should be apart of the Dutch defence for a few years to come.
Lastly, the Dutch have two wonderful wingers who could provide drive, creativity and penetration for – fingers crossed – a decade or so. Arjen Robben and Robin van Persie were both exceptional. I stand by the claim that the Dutch have the two best wingers in the world. Portugal? Nope. Argentina? Not a chance. Brazil even? Not even close. Imagine Robben, ~22 with van Persie ~21 and Huntelaar ~21 being the attacking front three for the Dutch for five to ten years. In two years time can you imagine how well they will understand and play together?
I’m being very optimistic and I realize that things to always work out how they should or even stay the way they are now. Players lose their form and others take their place. But potentially the Dutch are a team to be very excited about. I know I am.

@Mike: to be honest, i meself am not that optimistic, think what you say about our attack and defence is very true and im not so worried about those parts in the team, but i dont realy agree with the things you say about Sneijder, i think he played pretty crappy, sure, partly cause of the position Marco let him play in (a position with to much defence responc.),
think Maduro is highly overrated, hes so slow…Schaars is a talent but it will take years to get him on international level
Hofs a bit the same as Sneijder, ok in offence but of little use when in defence..
think we have to much of the same (Hofs,Sneijder,vdVaart)and to little of the Davids(agressive) or R.deBoer(great holder of the ball and reader of the game),
will see mike, hope your right……

Although wonderful wingers although good defence
but the most important for us is control tackling and tech in midfield.
We need Makelele Viera
We need Cesc Deco
We need class midfielders
