@Jess, that tends to happen a lot, people thinkinh it's racist, but infact the reason he's black can have two origins, that he was an Italian chimney sweeper, or that he was an african slave bought free by the saint and helped him afterwards, but especially black people find it insulting as he is a helper and black, i don't see why, at first Piet stood for a concurred demon but with the St. Nicolas of Myra and the slave tale being mixed in it actually became a symbol of the saints goodness. cause he bought a little slave boy free. Nothing wrong with that. It's not racist at all. People who say it is mostly just have a fear cause they're black themselves and want to eliminate everything what they feel could be anything close to racism. I don't know why, but minorities tend to make an appeal on the racism very quickly.

Alex- I'm glad you metioned Sinterklaas vacations in Spain. Here in Ontario Canada where I live we have Santa Claus parades that used to have Sinterklass floats as we have a large dutch community here. A jamacian group complained that Zwarte piet was racist because they thought he took "bad children" away. We tried to explain he was actually spanish and was black from coal. They made us take out the float anyhow. So it's nice to know that my family was infact telling the truth and Zwarte Piet wasn't a bad guy ;)

Did you know that Ol' English is from the Northern tribes of Germany (Angels) and the Frisians of Holland? The Frisians can read the original Beowulf no worries! They moved to England (no one knows why) and brought their language to the British Isles and their language slowly pushed the Celtic language out...

Did a click to soon... The song goes further and follows with a "kakmadam" somesort of barones.. she sings: What a splendid performance. Followed by a hooligan who's intention is to break any ones legs, and then followed by a bratt: everybody shut-up! Now, the first one repeats the second and so on. However, this is not the original clip of van Duin, but this is a fanmade clip of pictures of famous people in Holland.

Speaking of Sinterklaas.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IoDHf6zl79c look at the end of this clip.
Well, this song was done by Andre van Duin, a famous comedian. It's a parody of an old Dutch folksong, where a girl, named Catootje, is going to a buttermarket and carves out several persons out of the butter. The basic theme of that song is pun-intended, like van Duin's version.
A small transcription follows like this:
Van Duin goes to a soccer-stadium with his brother-in-law. There's plenty of room, but they see a fat man and he sings "We gonna be champions". Then they see a sharp-dressed man. He sings: What a goal! A sausage-seller sings: Hot sausages! A knock-out blonde sings: Shall I comfort ye? A Minister sings: I don't care... A drunkard sings: Is there any booze left?

The cristmas tree, is thought to come from Germanic tribe tradition, during winter the days were short and dark, so they were said to have put up shiny objects in a tree or something, to scare away evil demons and spirits with their own reflection. Also to reflect any light there was, to make it brighter. so the current decorated tree has gotten another but though similar use, it brings light in dark times, and stands for happiness, warmth, safety.

As I dig deeper into Sinterklaas, there are other holidays celebrated in europe like this. The current Sinterklaas is said to have come from Turkey originally, our biggest Allochtoon!!(strange word for foreigner). And was indeed a saint. Saint nicolas of Myra, a bisschop, hence the outfit. At first the back piet was to symbol a concurred demon, forced to do good by the saint, or a pagan pre-chistian God being concurred by Christianity . This goes back to Germanic Gods like Wodan and such, so Sinterklaas and Zwarte piet originaly were a duo. Only one helper, but after world WWII the canadians had a brilliant idea and introduced multiple black pieten when they celebrated with us. the current piet is black, thought to suggest he is a moor(old name for African), and it's said that Saint nicolas bought a african slave boy free once named Piter, which decided to stick with Nicolas and help him. His clothes are probalby a mixture of moor clothing and Italian chimney sweeping clothes, that's why he is mostly said to be black these days, he goes through chimney's(chimney sweeper). But the current Zwarte piet is probably a mixture of all of the influences.

But most of all everything from Sinterklaas to Santa claus most likely comes directly from Germanic tribe traditions, Mythology, Gods and customs.
Santa is most likely derived from the god Odin himself.
Now if that wasn't good to learn, I'll just shoot myself :)
Now you know why you love us so much, we are the origin of your holiday's
