Our Hero: Phillip Cocu

June 5th, 2006 | By: Mike | 3 Comments »

Way back we talked about vital players who the Dutch need for the Tournament in Germany. FIFAWorldCup.com had their own opinion and they’ve chosen Phillip Cocu as their ‘Unsung Hero’ for the Oranje.

I always cringe when I hear cliches like “the new Pele” or “the new Maradona” but in some cases its almost forgivable. Will there be a “new Cocu” in coming years? Look at U-21 side that just triumphed in Portugal. Could it be Hofs, or Schaars? Maybe the “new Cocu” is already in our midst in the form of Maduro? As usual, I have no idea. That’s why I’m asking all of you.

cocu’s definitely one of my favourite players to watch…he’s so smart with and without the ball, he always seems to be in the right position, runs hard, plays strong defensively and eventhough people don’t give him much credit for his attacking skills, he’s a good passer who rarely gives up possession to the other team. and when is the last time you saw him blast a shot wildly into the stands? he may not score much, but he seems to have a knack for making late runs into the box to get shots which are on target more often than not. did i mention he’s good in the air? i hope we get to see him get his head on a few of sneijder’s dangerous free kicks at the wc.

Cocu is still CG in Basten’s system. As a Central defender, holding mid-fielder, and playmaker he could serve at the same time.
The problem is his age, pace and energy.I really worry at the team’s over-dependent on him.
Who could be his replacement?
For the time being the answer is no!. Maduro is the only one in the squad as just in case.
Schaars, De zeew and Maduro could be his longterm successors
