I do think the author was referring to a comparison between city-clubs and players versus provincial players. Dirk, Bert, Klaas Jan are all typical Dutch names. More so than Patrick, Clarence, Edgar and Stanley. Or Wesley, Rafael and Rodney :-). This Dutch team looks very "Dutch" and so does the coaching staff. Feet firm on the ground kinda thing. Stamppot. Whereas Marco and Johnny were more cosmopolitan. I don't think fans object to players like Afellay or Gullit or Menzo or De Guzman. It is a problem with some surinaamese and arabs/n africans. That's just a fact of life in netherlands right now. I personally wish everyone inside netherlands, regardless of background, color, religion, etc. cheered their hearts out for the oranje b/c I love dutch culture and the netherlands so much--my grandfather was from rotterdam-- but that sadly is not the case. But not everyone in netherlands feels this way and if this feeling carries over to national team in the future--near future--then I think its a potential problem for the national team. The support the dutch peple have for the oranje is incredible and larger than life. If that changes, the national team will suffer whether carlos/finnster wish to recognize it or not.
