Oranje has never been more Dutch…

November 19th, 2008 | By: Jan | 40 Comments »

Dirk plays the ball to Dirk. Bert ask Bert questions. We never had such an typical Dutch team as our current one. Oranje smells of “stamppot” again…

The Oranje of today reflects the vibe of province and meadows. The hotel where the players reside serves up Swedish meatloaf, otherwise it would have been stamppot (traditional Dutch dish, made of mashed potatoes, mashed carrots and onions… yech!!). Bert (Maalderink) asks Bert (Van Marwijk) questions at the press conference, while Kees (Jansma) looks on.

Is Henk (Timmer) fit? Will Dirk (Kuyt) replace Klaas (Jan Huntelaar). It maybe a detail, but it does sound like the kids’ book from the 1950s. Andre and Joris might be the central defenders duo. Dirk played with Dirk on the right against Norway. And Mark guards the balance in midfield.

The province makes way in the Eredivisie. Groningen, Nijmegen, Breda, Alkmaar and Enschede do well in the tables and so it does in Oranje. No more filmstars (Kluivert, Seedorf, Davids) and where our former manager had this cosmopolitan almost mythical persona, our current manager is like the guy you know from the pub around the corner: born in Deventer, living in Meerssen.

“Will you go to the cafe in your village after this press conference,” the question was, and Van Marwijk nodded with vigour. And Frank de Boer is known to spend his free time on the camping in Lutjebroek!

No more cosmopolitan team managers like Hiddink and Rijkaard. And Advocaat may have been the streetwise kid from Den Haag, he always fell back on the big name players. That Van Marwijk doesn’t have spot in the team for jetsetter Clarence Seedorf isn’t even a surprise or talking point anymore.

In a time of multicultured societies, Oranje is the reflection of an old fashioned sort of Holland. The only exotic players in our current group are Gio van Bronckhorst, Ryan Babel, Nigel de Jong, Orlando Engelaar and Khalid Boulahrouz. All the rest is born in Hummelo, Horst, Goirle or Katwijk.

As a comparison: of the eleven starters on the recent Olympics, nine were so-called immigrant’s kids. This ratio is similar in the other youth teams. This Oranje has a so-called Delfts Blauw color and it might well be the last time. Van Marwijk follows players like Leroy Fer, Georginio Wijnaldum and even selected David Mendes Da Silva for Sweden.

And the fans? The city fans were never big Oranje followers. They live and die for their clubs. The Oranje fans come from Stadskanaal, Almelo and Breda. The Feyenoord fans historically don’t have much time for Oranje and in the Arena tonight, there won’t be a lot of Ajax fans either.

And some twenty Koreans were part of the Oranje following today. They are students at the KNVB, doing a coach apprenticeship. Van Marwijk may not have Hiddink’s status in Asia, the Koreans all stood in line up for a photo-opp with the current manager of Oranje.

Outstanding game I thought and a very good result against a surprisingly terrible Swedish team

Sorry, MO to hurt you overly pc feelings. The question is a real one: Will the white dutch (or non-exotics, to use jan’s term) support those who are “exotic” (Is that better, MO? Dude?) in the future? Will the great love the people from the countryside and provinces feel for the oranje be as strong when the players do not look like, or live like, or share the same old-timey Dutch culture, as those folks?

And if they do not love the future teams as much as past ones is part of that reason b/c so many “exotic” Dutch support other nations–perhaps their ancestors or parents homelands–before the oranje?

Jan raises the issue, I add that question, MO.

Can we put an an end to all this black white exotic garbage as we are in fact only interested in football.
Whatever happens (Spain was once ruled by Blacks/Arabs)is part of an on going evolution or revolution. Whatever cultural mix we inherit it will all sort itself out. We are here to discuss FOOTBALL and its players - Whatever race/colour/creed - It’s football that rules, politic can be discussed and argued in thousands of other blogs.

Amen!! Sick and tired of the race thing. All it takes is a Dutch passport and some great football skills, and Oranje could be your dream. I couldn’t care less if you were black, blue, yellow, purple or green. End of story.

There are people from all over the world posting here, and I love every minute of it.

As Carlos so eloquently puts it, we are here to discuss football. There are plenty of anthropology blogs for all the other nonsense.

MMM… wortelstamp with farmer’s sausage and dutch mustard. There is nothing better to warm up to after being outside in Canada’s winter.

The current dutch squad - nice and dutch which is good for the chemistry. They played really well against a poor swedish side. Does anyone know if Suarez’s good play earned him a spot in the game against France?

@Carlos/finnster; not so fast my friends; i reckon the question by sims is pretty valid

ofcourse race/colour is of no importance, nobody cares ..

when it comes to sympathies for other countries it can become a problem; i remind you people of the surinam-flag-waving incident with the U21 … people in Holland were NOT amused
and its certainly true that most morroccons dont really support Holland (although with Affelay thats prob. gonna change); during a WC or EC you will never see a morroccon guy in an Orange shirt, they rather support Brasil

and i really dont think that only a passport and skills can make you a player of het nederlands elftal (see Kalou) .. it still is about representing your country

Hey Goose
All that is understood and we can write pages about this issue, we dont say it doesn’t exist, it does and so does racism. All we say is WHO cares, go to another blog to discuss racism in sport or some neo political theory on how you can live peacefully under 2 flags.
Politics happens all the time in Sport - read Puskas Story or di Stefano on how politics can ruin sportsmen or women (Nadia Comaneci for example)
Surely we can just discuss the football aspect here ? In Australia it usually takes 2 generations for immigrants to become Dinkum Aussies and the Oz team is full of 2nd generation immigrants.
Vieri’s Sports Idol was/is Allan Border, wonder how many know who is ? :)

Just to be clear–not trying to cause controversy–jan raised what I thought was an interesting point about the oranje and I raised a question about it. My personal view is that if you live in netherlands and consider yourself dutch, you are dutch. Period. But not everyone in netherlands feels this way and if this feeling carries over to national team in the future–near future–then I think its a potential problem for the national team. The support the dutch peple have for the oranje is incredible and larger than life. If that changes, the national team will suffer whether carlos/finnster wish to recognize it or not.

Also, I apologize to carlos/finnster if I caused any offence, I enjoy reading your comments very much in this blog but on this point, we disagree. I just think this may become a negative issue for oranje going forward…anbd therefore, a proper topic of talk on a national dutch football blog.

@ sims
i understand what you are trying to say but the dutch team will not become france on singapore giving foreign players passport just so they can play for the NT. dutch team will always have dutch antillean players because of nerdeland antlles is part of holland and surinamese and indonesian players because of history(former dutch colonies). a few moroccan(1-2) players because of mass immigration.

I agree with sims/goose that it’s a valid question. And it’s not a quiestion of race either, so we shouldn’t just act all PC and say we don’t need to discuss it because it’s an old-fashioned idea of racial-tension. It’s about culture, but more importantly it’s about where your loyalties lie, and I think all here are in agreement that we only want players in Oranje who are proud to be Dutch and proud to be playing for Oranje.

Caleb said it best. 100% agreement with that.

@MO, I don’t think anyone is questioning loyalties of antillean dutch. It is a problem with some surinaamese and arabs/n africans. That’s just a fact of life in netherlands right now.
I personally wish everyone inside netherlands, regardless of background, color, religion, etc. cheered their hearts out for the oranje b/c I love dutch culture and the netherlands so much–my grandfather was from rotterdam– but that sadly is not the case.

Ok, no more from me on this issue.

Honestly, the U21 surinam flag thing really pissed me off and I am not even Dutch. I come from the most politically correct country in the world and I think its OK to call a spade a spade. Its not being racist, its being normal. If that didn’t bother you as a dutchman than you have a serious issue.

But the horrible socio-political problems of countries like Holland really don’t belong in the blog. Except to say that anybody doing bullshit like that deserves only to get their last call up and their deportation orders.

There should be no argument allowed in this case. You are there to represent the country that gave you the honour to go.

I’m sorry if “my article” caused this debate (was an AD piece actually), but it does play up every now and then. I do think the author was referring to a comparison between city-clubs and players versus provincial players. Dirk, Bert, Klaas Jan are all typical Dutch names. More so than Patrick, Clarence, Edgar and Stanley. Or Wesley, Rafael and Rodney :-).

This Dutch team looks very “Dutch” and so does the coaching staff. Feet firm on the ground kinda thing. Stamppot. Whereas Marco and Johnny were more cosmopolitan.

I don’t think fans object to players like Afellay or Gullit or Menzo or De Guzman. It’s as Goose said, if they wave any other flag than the Dutch, the fans will object.
