Oranje doesn’t understand the criticism

September 14th, 2007 | By: Jan | 13 Comments »

Relieved and satisfied were the most apparent emotions when the Oranje players bid each other goodbye. Six points in two matches in four days… See you in a month…

Management and players also realized that after the tough victory over Albania the EC is getting really close.

In the remaining four games, Oranje only needs seven points for a successful qualification series. In October, Oranje has the away game against Rumanina, home matches versus Slovenia and Luxembourg and a visit to Belarus.

Ruud van Nistelrooij had a big impact in both wins. He only had two shots on goals, and was allowed to cheer both times. Not only was the winner against Albania a beauty, he also showed that whatever his shortcomings are, he is of tremendous value to the team.

And as Ruud van Gol doesn’t get why some people keep on talking about his lesser points, his coach and team mates do not understand why the whole team is being criticized.

Joris Mathijsen: “We really did a great job. It was tough, and we got the maximum result. But, as usual, everybody will be disappointed.”

But, the HSV defender conveniently forgot that ref Riley disallowed Melchiot’s own goal without any reason. Van Basten acknowledged: “We were very lucky with that,” after seeing the images back on telly.

Van Basten was happy that his players didn’t allow themselves to be provoked like they did against Portugal last year. And he’s very happy with creative players like Van Nistelrooij, Van Persie, Sneijder, Van der Vaart, Babel, Kuijt and Robben, who can break open matches with one brilliant idea.

Oranje’s problems aren’t upfront, where leading players from Real Madrid, Arsenal, Liverpool and AC Milan compete for a starters position. But, with defenders of clubs Ajax, PSV, Wigan Athletic, Blackburn Rovers, Aston Villa and Hamburger SV Oranje is vulnerable at the back.

Reassuring is the fact that after three years Van Basten has found the linking pin between defense and offense in Demy de Zeeuw. However, a midfield with De Zeeuw and Van Bronckhorst doesn’t offer enough creativity, which can be solved with replacing Gio by Seedorf or Afellay.

Reading all the criticism in the newspapers, the Oranje players and supporting staff found consolation in the fact that other renowned countries made bigger mistakes. France, Spain and Portugal proved, according to the team manager, that in the current international football culture it should be considered quite an achievement to grab six points in four days. Even if these results are achieved with dreadful football and a very late goal.

I don’t think that we don’t have problem upfront. With all these stars upfront, we still have no way to supply the balls for Ruud. I think that it would be useless to discuss the players’ quality. It’s the whole system VB using. It prove that it make everyone play worse no matter who he is, Mathijsen, Bouma, Ruud, VP, Sneijder, …

in countries like italy france or germany it seems only results counts, and these are the team that perform the best at international stage. what do you guys think? it’s because there’s less pressure on the players?

The 4-3-3 in its self is a good system if you had your players year round, such as the club level, but the reality is otherwise. I also feel that while the Oranje are talent heavy up front they don’t have the right style of players for a 4-3-3 system, their instincts are not suited to the system. But we all know that here, what I’d say to MVB where he to listen…be bold, be brave, buck traditional Dutch thinking and switch tactics. I’m willing to bet were he to do that Oranje would crush Romania, everyone knows we force ourselves to play 4-3-3.

Ok. Now we should think otherwise. I mean, it’s not possible to replace 4-3-3 under Basten. So, what’s the best players that Holland has now to play with 4-3-3?

vd Sar
Gio|Drenthe|Bouma, Mathisjen, Heitinga|Ooijer, Melchiot|Krompamp|Boula

vdv, sneijder, Seedorf|De Zeeuw|Affelay

van persie|Kuyt, RVN|Hasselink|Huntelaar, Robben|Babel

bobotoh…That assumption and sad realization that we have to stick to 4-3-3 is itself the biggest tragedy. Just because an ossified management cannot change its straitjacketed thinking, we have to force the players to fit the system. To be honest the team you have proposed is one of the best possible under 4-3-3. But there are problems with this formation as such.
- RVN will perenially be starved of crosses and goalscoring opportunities.
- VanPersie will be rendered almost ineffective because neither he is a right footer nor is he a winger.
- Since we do not have genuine wingers we would not be stretching the full backs and instead all the three forwards would crowd the goalmouth.
- 4-3-3 leaves a lot of gaps in the centre, this is crucial in playing against 4-5-1 or 4-4-2. The understanding in 4-3-3 as in the 1974 team was that the forwards would fall back with the midfield, the backs would go in quick overlaps etc. Well this is somethng which does not happen now.
- 4-3-3 is one of the most fluid offensive systems, Ideally a three pronged fwd line should always keep the opposition defence on tenterhooks. The crosses being floated, the quick passes etc. and most importantly the wide line of attack should be instrumental in breaking down the most stubborn of all defences. But what we have seen is that even Albania is proving such a difficult team to conquer. Then how would we fare against tough defences like Italy/France/Germany?

Nothing wrong about playing 4-3-3, but everythings wrong in how we do it.

@Letkot: Right, 4-3-3 is a good system, Barca used that system and they won CL. The thing is that we have no players to play 4-3-3.

Striker: We need someone can score as well as create spaces and chances for others. Barca has Etoo. We had Kluivert in the past. Who can do that in our teams now?
Ruud: he can score and that’s all
Huntelaar: same thing
Kuyt: he can create spaces and chances for others but … he is not good at scoring.

Wingers: only one decent winger and he gets injury from time to time.

Midfield: no real defend midfield and we make it tougher by using only 3 man in middle.

Defender: no left-back or right-back who can go upfront and help the winger. Bouma never go up, Melchiot go up sometimes but doesn’t know how to cross, Emanuelson and Drenthe is too young.

So tell me one good reason to use 4-3-3

since we don’t have left & rigt backs, why shouldn’t we go back to 343 systm, leaving our backs stay disciplined behind.

Bouma, Ooijer, Boula
Bronkorst,
Dranthe, Dezeeuw,
sneijder,
Vaart, Ruud, Persie

All these quotes and understandings about why or how we play the 433 system. We win, its important. I dont know if half you people only watch Oranje play football, but the rest of the world top aint to bright in playing nice football aswell. Holland is winning there matches, and against any eastern European team it is hard, because there style of play is very defensive. Put Holland against Brazil or Italy, or any other country with an attacking mentality, the football gets better. And we have enough players who fit the 4 3 3 system. I agree, i prefer the 4 4 2, but that also has its ups and downs. Romania should be a better match than against albania, And im sure we will win it if Romania seek to win aswell. Still amazed this blog is still running,

Cheers

Thanks Martijn! Great to have you back :-).

The site “owners” told me that they will revamp this site soon and make it more generic (now it’s still the 2006 blog officially). They’re also hnting for moderators for other national teams (see ad on this site).
