A lot of the big names that aren't playing are not playing because of circumstances out of Van Basten's control like injuries, or family matters, or agreements such as the one Van Der Sar has where he doesn't have to play friendlies. He is one of those players that came thru Ajax' youth system. Van Gaal used him a lot and was happy with him, but I think Melchiot left Ajax too quick, going for big money. He has everything a modern defender needs. But his character may have been difficult, I don;t know. Anyway, in France last season - with Rennes - he sort of developed himself very positively. I'd like to see him on the right full back position. Heitinga and Boulah are central defenders. Kromkamp is an exciting player but not a real defender, in my view. So, yeah... I hope so...
