One Dutch club in last 32 of Europe…hmmm…

February 26th, 2009 | By: Jan | 20 Comments »

In the next round, Gabri will come and whoop your ass!

We can lament the status of Dutch football for hours, but luckily the world will view us as a major force still, thanks to our talent playing abroad. But Dutch clubs have it tough these days.

FC Twente, with a budget being one-quarter of Olympique’s, couldn’t cut it. In a tight match, Olympique leveled only for Twente to capitulate after 16 spotkicks. Skipper N’Kufo missed, prompting cynical laughs from the Marseille players. Wankers!

McClaren: “We were the best team over two games but lady Luck wasn’t with us today. This is cruel!”

NEC obviously couldn’t make it in Hamburg, but Mario Been was still proud of his ratbag lot of players, whom he gelled into a great team. Looking for big things from Super Mario in Rotterdam soon…
Mario Been: “I filled with pride that I am allowed to coach this team! These lads are going somewhere…”

Martin Jol could gloat.

And Ajax did it Italian style. With a fortified midfield, which in Dutch terms means 4-4-2 by the way :-) , Ajax was heading for extra time and penalties. Gilardino scored (Vermeer had to stand in for the flu stricken Stekel but played a great game) but more risk (paying attention Van Basten!!) resulted in reward.

Dribble king Leonardo came on and just like against HSV in the group stages the former Feyenoord Brazilian hit gold. In the last minute, his dribble ended in a successful shot in the near corner: 1-1 and Ajax is the last of the Mohicans in Europe!

Feel really bad about Twente losing … esp. since i hate the french and they also have Gerets as a manager… Twente didnt need to lose this one

HSV was far too strong for NEC (the Hamburg team has 10 times the NEC budget), no change for Mario

Ajax was pretty lucky. they play Olympique next round

One Dutch club in the last 16 btw. I’m thinking Ajax can get through into the quarter-finals too. Maybe with a bit of luck, and a bit of form, they can make the run to the finals.

Off Topic – Bert has said that he would welcome the return of RvN should he want to return for Oranje. Ruud had mentioned in Madrid that if he gets back the form he was at before the operation he could be enticed back into the Oranje team, especially with a WC coming up soon.

@Goose: didn’t know they had Gerets as the manager. That must have slipped through the lines on my part. He was an awesome defender though, forgive him his passport. None the less, I am not awfully saddened that Umbrella man lost to be honest. I just cant get myself to like the man, I have no problem with Twente though, a fairly rich history with Norwegian players in the past.

Maybe I am too ‘pool and just can’t like anyone with a Man U history.

gerets was an idiot as a player. Too much testosterone. And that beard. And that accent. A lunatic :-) . Never liked him. Van Basten will crush him… ( I like this smoke….)

Poor Twente! They didn’t deserved this sad finish. Well… a little bit. They really should have scored on Grolsch Veste environment. Well, at least asking for more and more support, a Liverpool-like. They were playing at home! I know, PKs are never fair, but they can’t claim about this. Rules are rules. Dura lex sed lex. Unfortunately… “football is also sadness with Steve” :) :(

And Ajax… the result was not a surprise, but definitely the team didn’t need to have such a rough time against Fiorentina. Because of this, I don’t believe they’ll pass through OM. The only hypothesis is to win for a good margin on Velodrome, where the crowd pressure disturb the players from the French side (they always struggle at home).

BTW, Ten Cate wants desperately Leonardo, but I doubt San Marco wants to sell him now. One of the best – possibly the best – Ajax players last weeks.

BTW again, Ancelotti future seems not to be at Milan. Some people are talking already about Marco coaching the rossoneri… what about, fellas?

Hmm when Castelen played voor Oranje, I was not impressed at all. Glad they got rid of him…just not good enough for the Dutch squad. As far as I know, nobody here misses him? In any case, he does not outclass any of our current attacking selection.

yes and what a club it is :) .

Daily Mail reports today that Abramovich is looking to make Guus Hiddink permanent coach at Chelsea.

He is supposed to offer the Russia job to Dick Advocaat…

Daily Mail is Daily Mail, but I could see that happen.

@Felipe – “football is also sadness with Steve” – haha, nice one :-)

@Finnster – I wouldn’t like that because I want Chelsea to fail… but I would enjoy having Dickie unleashed on Russia, haha!

bad news for our guys in realmadrid-junade is fedup with roban’s selfish individual play and future of roban? In my personel veiw i always felt that roban and znijder(it is not so visible for a normal eye in znijder case) are selfish even though they are matchwinners.is it?
but at the same time we appreciate the other higly talented players like RVP,VAART for their team spirit and team play style.
anyway ROBAN IS The best player of the country at the momment.

not completely so, he just said, Robben plays too individually, and I agree, I mentioned before that if he wants to be truly important and the best player in the world, he’ll have to start developing his right-foot, overall skills and he’ll have to deliver more assists. Simple as that, he’s too predictable at the moment, on the right he always seems to cut inside and then usually takes a shot or eventually passes to someone else cause he has no where to go. But I don’t blame him for trying against Liverpool, had no real support upfront except for Higuain.
BTW very very f*cked up that Twente is out this way, Marseille got extremely lucky. I hate Gerets, don’t matter if he played for PSV or not, he’s a sh*thead who claimed that Marseille are one of the best teams in UEFA Cup, bullsh*t, V.Basten doesn’t say that about Ajax. And yet Marseille didn’t deserve their place in the next round any more than Ajax.
Thought Twente, again, played better than their opponent, looked like there was no getting through to Twente’s goal, only to conceed such a sh*tty goal.

Also Vermeer really excelled against Fiorentina. Very impressive, should Stekelenburg leave this summer, Ajax don’t have to worry about a new keeper. He should really play regularly somewhere next season.

Let’s hope Leonardo gets in another sneaky goal against Marseille, and they get eliminated by Ajax.

@Jan – really? I figured Man U already has their next keeper lined up in Foster, and didn’t Sir Alex just recently say “Foster is the future” (or something like that) after he won them the shoot out in the Carling cup?
