No progress!

Reading the newspapers after Oranje’s defeat against Romania, the emphasis is on the lack of progress in Marco van Basten’s team.

Trouw points at the decreasing trend in Oranje’s progress and wrote: “the crux was Oranje’s inability, players and coaches, to adapt to the circumstances and improvise on the basis of those circumstances. Oranje doesn’t have enough weapons to keep their head above water when things don’t go as everyone wants. Oranje wasn’t prepared for Romania’s post-break attitude and that is something we can blame the coach for as well.”

The Algemeen Dagblad saw the same: “It’s is annoying that the Dutch team, on the way to an easy qualification, didnt have the tools to fend off the transparent intentions of the Romanian team. And it is even more annoying to see that Oranje played pretty reasonable football even. So, it goes to show that reasonable football is not enough.”

The AD thinks the lack of progress is becoming to be a headache. “It’s the same lesson as the one against Portugal on the WC2006. If it becomes a fight you have to use your brains. Oranje didn’t progress in that area at all!”

The Volkskrant also doesn’t see any improvement. “Van Basten copped the second defeat in four matches (Switzerland and Romania). Which is the same number of defeats as Oranje sufferend in the two years prior to Switzerland. That is a sign of a team not getting any progress, whereas that is the main wish of the team manager.”

Great great article!!!. This article explains everything.

Instead of havind a better team he is going backwards. Marco still doesn’t know what is his titular line-up, that’s one of his huge mistakes.

well; dont wanna sound arrogant but ive been saying this for some time now…no progress!!

Marco is just not used of not getting things right when it comes to football….cause of his qualities as a player he was always right, when it came to football he wasnt used at getting critism (and righty so when you are a player of that quality)
it looks to me that Marco still thinks his ‘plan’is gonna get us succes and glorie…looks to me that he is arrogant, underestimates the fans, the players and overestimates himself as a manager

nothing to be done my friends…well just have to bite our time and hope that the KNVB wont give him another contract

Right you are, Goose, and you have been saying these things all along. I wrote a lengthier email after the last blog from Jan, that details my further thoughts on the matter. Put simply, van Basten is not, nor will he ever be, in my opinion, a very good coach. That’s OK, we all have things that we don’t do well. Because he was such a phenomenal player, expectations were very high that he would become an excellent coach. As you say, Goose, until he leaves, we simply have to try and keep the faith and hope the players can motivate themselves to get the job done. The sad part for all of us is that this team could be so much better with a top quality coach. Bring on de Haan!

I had the idea recently, that Marco still thinks as a player. I truly think he is sincere and when he is “part of the group” and needs to do an interview about the game, his reality is distorted. He talks like a player, always trying to “defend” the game by saying it wasn’t bad or it was tough or the pitch was dreadful or whatever. Marco can’t take any distance and analyse objectively.

I blame the KNVB for putting Marco in this position. Look at the fall of grace our former hero has made. Sad, really.

Jan, Bob, Goose, guys:

You are correct. The KNVB is the responsible for all of the things that happened after Euro 2004 and to van Basten. Are they stupid or what?. It is the second time they appoint a player with no previous experiencie as a coach for the national team. I think this man Kesler should be fired because he is an asshole who doesn´t know anything about football.

Then he says that he won´t allow van Basten to manage both Ajax and Holland at the same not even with 100 million euros???. Is he crazy or what???. What has van Basten done in his coaching career in order to say that stupidity?. I think Kesler should be fired right now and van Basten along the way before Euro 2008 because those two are hurting Dutch soccer. I see why van Basten has survived so long as our coach: it is because he has a completely asshole and useless boss who will let van Basten do whatever he wants even if it is gonna hurt and damage our style and results like at the World Cup.

Kesler is the main responsible for all and I hope he is sacked brutally because if not then perhaps he will appoint Cocu or Overmars, De Boer or perhaps himself. We have top coaches all over the world and hopefully van Basten will change his attitude and his tactics because if not in Euro 2008 it will be a disaster!
