No one laughs at Van der Sar anymore…

Candido Cannavo’s article in the Gazzetta Dello Sport had Edwin van der Sar as main subject. The master of the pen submitted his article on Thursday. As ever. And then he went and ate a plate of pasta in the newspapers cantina. He ate some bites, his breathing stopped and a brain hemorrage ended his life, then and there. The Don of Italian Sports journalism was 78 years old.
He died on the pitch, so to speak. The conscience of Italian calcio. And that means something in Italy. Il Direttore will be missed.
And he offered Van der Star his rehabilitation his way to the grave: “No one laughs at Edwin Van der Sar anymore” was the title of the piece. Because they used to, in Italy. Press and public. The Juve goalie had many nicknames: Edwin van der Gol, Pannocchione (corn cob). Not flattering for a goal keeper.
He who eats records for breakfast now in England was remembered in Italy as the tall fellow who was tricked by Totti with a lob and made a couple of huge howlers wearing the Juventus jersey.
His most famous papera (howler) was in 2000, against champs Lazio Roma. Salas shot wasn’t that hard, even. But Edwin slipped and fell on his butt and the ball rolled into the goal.
The Juve Tifosi had had it with Sar. Banners, songs, booing… The media were ruthless. No charisma, Peter Pan ears, they called him brutto (ugly) and didn’t look like he was champ. Everything was wrong with Sar.
Coach Carlo Ancelotti defended his coach with a vengeance, but later he would say- off the record of course – that the Dutchman cost him two titles. But, Ancelotti liked the Ajax goalie. He was nice. Social. The players liked him too and he spoke fluent Italian within months.
His Italian adventure started pretty good in 1999. At the end of his first season, however, things went horribly wrong. He left the goal too soon, misjudged high crosses…he became un caso (an issue). People started to look for reasons. His eyes weren’t good, he needed specs. “End of mysterie. Problem solved”, the media wrote. “Nonsense,” Sar replied. “It’s not me but Davids who has problems with his eyes…”
Whatever. Buffon came, Sar went. The fans were relieved, and so was Sar. He went to find his luck in England. Cannavo wrote: “So, after nine years you’d expect to find Van der Sar in some Jurassic Park, enjoying his retirement, but no… The Dutchman is on it’s way to become a Living Legend. Life is full of surprises. How beautiful it is, to take revenge with a smile…”
The last article of Candido Cannavo. Buried close to the Guiseppe Meazza, legendary Inter Milan player of yore…
Cannavo is dead. Long live Edwin van der Sar…

Great article. I don’t know how can anyone doubt about if Edwin is good or not!!!. At least this journalist could finally see the real truth before he passed away about Edwin because to me Edwin’s recent performances are not a surprise at all!!, he has had some mistakes but very few if I must say compared to other goalies. He plays the ball great with his feet, safe goalie since he was with Ajax so I really don’t see the surprise here.

@Edwin lacked charisma thats true, but his reflex and brillinace is uncomparable,it may be above buffon.I think,In manchester he is bit lucky coz he got a charismatic coach and excellent diffenders.

@alex i read your previous comment on locked dutch diffence under BVM,i too feel its true, but the oldies gio,de cler, ooiger should be dropped from the team.under vanbasten we depended VDS a lot that was evident in all those matches, our diffence was crap and with luck and VDS we survived.
if we are dropping brafheid for de cler and bauma for gio it will be big mistake and it will become like a sin, like for kuyt and haiselink vanbasten dropped hunter and finally kuyt kicked our ass against portugalWC2006.
and vander weil and zuiverloon should be called up ,we need such kind of diffenders in Southafrica.hope for the full fitness of vlaar and luirnk.
one headache is finished that was englaar,
our holdingmids ranking
1-schaars
2-de jong
3-mendes da silva
4-vanbommel
5-demy de saaw
6-maduro
7-englaar

our central striker rankings
1-nestelrooy
2-huntlaar
3-vanpersie
4-babel
all these players are good finishers (world class finishers)they will never let us cry after the game(if they get good support from back like we played against portugal WC).
rest of them are simply not eligible for central striker spot in orange and they look other postions-
but surpraising thing is our formula is 14321 so ie,only one central striker position, with all these main options why we are wasting spots for hailselink and co?

I wouldnt call Afellay winger, mainly because he doesnt play on the wing. There’s a few Dutch wingers in the Eredivisie as well… not too many in the top clubs though… Amrabat in PSV, Leonardo in Ajax, Elia, Denneboom and Gerritsen in Twente, Beerens in Heerenveen.
I really like Daniel de Ridder in Wigan and I’m quite curious about Marvin Emnes in Boro.

wingers:
robben
beerens
drenthe
v.d.meijde
makeshift wingers:
kuijt
elia
sneijder
amrabat
babel
afellay
v.persie
kalou

Biseswar is sort of a winger, so is Slory, but he’s crap anyway. Julian Jenner was a winger, but his career is screwed up.
I think it’s quite obvious though who actually deserve to/should play for oranje right now. At least when putting Seedorf, V.d.Sar aside

@Tiju – Babel, a world class finisher?? We are talking about Ryan Babel who plays for Liverpool right? Whose missed a bunch of sitters already this season? Even Kuyt finishes better than Babel!

@Tiju and Caleb: I’m afraid Caleb is very right on the Babel front. And by the way, Kuyt’s finishing isn’t actually all that bad at all. It is just that he isn’t a Van Goal or Torres and never will be. His biggest weakness in my opinion is that he lacks that killer instinct to read ahead where the ball eventually will be.
However, when he does get the chance, he is pretty decent at putting them away. It should only happen much more often. Which is why I like him best playing on the right midfield, running opposition raggid, attacking yet coming back and cover for the right back if he’s gone forward..etc..Not many workhorses around in todays game like that.
Kuyt should be used on the midfield, and his batteries and attitude should be copied to the rest of Oranje. He seems like a real stand up man outside the field too, and I respect that.

@finnister and caleb
Even ruud, henry missess some good chances thats wat i mean, bael would have missed but he is a natural finisher thats wat i said.

Sorry Tiju, there’s absolutely no comparing Babel and Ruud (or Henry). He’s definitely not a natural finisher. He’s quick and athletic, and so maybe he can create more chances, but he needs more chances to score because he’s less efficient. Maybe he’s more similar to Kluivert? But he’s probably not as good a finisher as Kluivert either.
