No Makaay and…?

It occurred to me a while back that Marco Van Basten had guaranteed Salomon Kalou a place in the squad if he had obtained his passport. This makes me wonder who would have been sacrificed for him? Let’s start with the provisional squad? Who wouldn’t have been named?

For me it would be either Martijn Meerdink or else Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. Then consider the front runners for the plane tickets; who wouldn’t be hopping on the plane? For those players we have named to be in the squad who would have been sacrificed knowing that Kalou would have a spot no matter what? Castelen or van Persie? Perhaps Klaas Jan Huntelaar?
