Nigel de Jong: Neeskens was glorified for this…

nigelUSA

Stuart Holden, the USA player who got kicked out of the game by Nigel de Jong is out for six week. The Bolton Wanderers midfielder broke his leg.

De Jong’s challenge gave fuel to an old debate. Everyone knows that players like Van Bommel and De Jong ( and before them Davids, Neeskens, Wouters) are crucial to win prizes but the big question is: do they know the limits. Bert van Marwijk struggles with that too. After the USA game, he said: “De Jong needs to change that. Now he got away with yellow, at the WC he could be given a red card and then he puts us all at a disadvantage.”

De Jong himself was a little bit in doubt after the game. He referred to midfielder Johan Neeskens, who was renowned and idolized for his urge to go to the limit and beyond to win games. But, De Jong also felt guilty. “Listen, it was not a conscious tackle on the player, it was a fifty-fifty ball. Look back and you’ll see. He overhit the ball a bit and I had to make a decision fast. Either I do it or I don’t. But if I engage, I have to go for the full 100%. I wanted to hit the ball, but he was just a tad quicker and I hit his ankle. I’m really sorry for him, but these things happen. And I realize that I could hurt the team’s interests with silly challenges but this was not a revenge-tackle or anything like that. I was a nano-second too late. I always want to play on the borderline and this time I went too far and I need to look a that.”

The heavy injury is a disappointment for the player and his English employer. Holden signed for Bolton in January.

De Jong: “In the 70s we all watched Neeskens. And there were only two cameras to witness it all and most people thought Nees was a hero for the way he played. What he did for the team was seen as tremendous. I didn’t want to hurt Holden. It’s sad for him and I’m sorry for him. I didn’t intend to do that, but it is part of football. Look at Van Persie. Next time it might be me. I will have to wear it then too.”

Van Nijnatten in the AD: “Nigel de Jong copped two red cards in his whole career. One was a straight red and the other was after two yellow cards. Both at HSV. De Jong shouldn’t be tagged now. He is not the idiot who doesn’t realize there’s 15 camera’s aimed at him. And he’s not the undisciplined thug who can’t control himself.

Nigel needs to be a bit shrewder, maybe. On camera, Van Marwijk criticized De Jong a tad, but off the record Van Marwijk was a bit more understanding. Come on, the team manager wouldn’t want his players to break legs on the pitch but the only reason Bert wants De Jong to take it easy is to shield him and the team from red cards. Not to protect the opponent.

Nigel simply wants the ball. He can’t stand it when his team doesn’t have the ball. And he will repossess the ball for the team. Oftentimes, he does and mostly without making a foul. These players need to become smarter in their play, but they are crucial for winning prizes. In particular at tournaments, players like Van Bommel and De Jong are key. Italy has Gattuso, Ireland had Keane, France has Makelele, Portugal had Couto, Holland had Davids… Players that only have to look at you to instill fear in you. These players are golden.

But, it wasn’t smart of De Jong to attract attention to that in friendlies against Japan, Paraguay and now Team USA. But I wouldn’t want to miss De Jong for the world..

@Finn buddy …………but venessa knows how to manage them.
Common guys what you are talking about?
De jong comparing himself to Neeskens? no…way.Dejong is not an idiot to do that.He was just saying that Neeskens got prise for doing the same and he is getting blame for doing same thing.(Hard tackles).
I am sure Dejong is a beast and a brilliant holding mid and does his duty always perfectly. He will not do the same in WC, i am damn sure…
i think Vaart and znijder should start for us in Wc along with Deong as lone holding mid…
i mean

@Peter we have superb LB in making –PATRICK VAN AANHOLT.
I think a should take him if Gio is the first choice for us.We will get an good combo there,ie Gio brings the experience when it needed and patrick brings Athletism,Speed,Height,Physical strength when it needed.

O Tiju are you serious ?! :D
V.Aanholt is very young bro !! he will be a flop if he goes with the oranje to SA . We have other options , good options , for the LB postion . Emanuelson will always be my 1st player in SA . Tiendalli is my 2nd player for the right and the left sides . I mean he plays if emanuelson or weil get injured , Plus bouma , gio , pieters , brafhied , boulahrouz and schaars ( yes he can play as a LB ) . So players like v.aanholt , bruma have no place in the worldcup 2010 , but they will be our stars in 2014 , so we just have to wait till they are ready , not to put them under such a great pressure .

@Mohmed
Emmanuelson is beast when going forward(somebody already mentioned here)But he is not a good diffender, ditto goes with Drenthe.
Peiters lacks consistancy and bit pace.So i had to look in to other options, thats why i picked Vaan aanholt.
Tyndally is ok for eredivise but WC????????All these days i was followng tyndally but he made me sad.
I would pick Emmanuelson as a left winger as a back up of Elia in left wing.
So for left wing it is First choice Elia
Emmanuleson on Bench.
Roben is beast in right wing so he is first choice there for me.In bench i would go for Wijnaldum coz the guy gives same work rate of kuyt with better skills. No matter how proloifc kuyt is ,this guy is going to kick our ass in SA.Mark my words.
As long as Gio & Ooiger performes like their old days i dont have any problem. Most of time youngsters played well in Worldcups they hardly disappointed eg Pele,Owen etc.if we encourage them, you will get the fruit from them.
First let them give a chance in friendlies and let us see how good they are now in orange leavel,if they are convincing ,the you take them otherwise take/Consider after two years.

My pick for left back would be Tim de Cler. Despite the lack of rhythm. Bert should pick him in May and get him all fired up. De Cler is developed at Ajax, played top flight football with AZ and Feyenoord until Gio moved from midfield back to LB. I saw De Cler play vs Ajax ( I think) this season and he still has the goods. Emanuelson is a gifted lad, but no LB.

Tiendali isn’t ready in my book. De Cler has x caps behind his name already.

Hi Bob, great to hear from you again :-) .

It was one of my biggest “defeats” to have lost you for our blog. I’m happy you returned for a visit.

I agree with you on De Jong. It was a 50-50 in my view and Holden was unlucky.

Van Persie should be ready to play games in May again, if all goes well, so I expect him to be super fit and super motivated by the time the WC starts.

Ruud wants to return to Oranje and it’s clear Bert wants him too, but Ruud needs to play matches and demonstrate his form first. For now he’s injured again, so…

Van der Sar has made his point. He will not come to the WC.

A left field comment: I saw Siem de Jong play with Ajax again and he might well be an option as center striker. He’s strong, has iron balls in the box, has a distance shot, great lungs, good vision, good workrate and is a good header too. He reminds me of John Bosman with a bit more dynamics. If he keeps on producing for Ajax, he could be the surprise pinch hitter if Ruud won’t be ready for the WC.

Thoughts?

By finnster01 :

Wayne Bridges and John Terry can’t :-)

By Peter vdL :

yeah but finn, bridge isn’t a good player.

By me :

Neither is Terry at the moment. I’ve never really noticed Terry as a good player. When is the last time England achieved anything of consequence? Did he get credit for Peter Czech’s clean sheets? Drogba winning matches with 1 or 2 goal differences? Lampard and/or Ballack winning the midfield so Chelsea’s defence is never in trouble? I can’t say whenever I’ve seen him play this season he impressed me as a defender of the Chiellini/Lucio/Vermaelen class (Vermaelen is perhaps slightly less effective defensively than Chiellini and Lucio, but his excellent start this season -scoring goals- warrants his addition to that short list).

But to be honest, I guess I haven’t seen much of Terry in his best days.

Oh, and I agree with Jan, Siem de Jong has good potential for the future of his career, certainly much better than midget vWolfswinkel (or worse, Wijnaldum, Biseswar, and perhaps even Fer, allthough he might improve). I don’t think he’ll prove of much more use to us than let’s say….Affelay or Babel.

I have a feeling SiemdeJong might be able to make it difficult for Hunter to maintain his striker spot ahead of him in the future (2014) but he’ll never get passed vPersie, so his chance will probably come after 2014 (since I assume vPersie will still be playing at 31).

I guess he plays more as a nr.10 playmaker right now at Ajax, so he’ll be competing with Sneijder and VDVaart as well. Pretty tough to get into Oranje for those positions (especially since vPersie can also play there).

By the way, we have to realize that we have no way of knowing how vPersie will do at this WC right now. We all like to talk about Vbasten’s return in ‘88 and then somehow pretend it will be like that again, but realisticly speaking, after a multiple month injury it’s always hard to find your old form back ( a lot of things to deal with first). We have to accept that Vpersie might not be as good at this WC as he was playing for Arsenal early this year. That would be only natural (what happened to vBasten was a bit of a fluke I guess).

But I guess we can hope he grows into the tournament finding his flow as we progress. But perhaps the media and the fans could tone down a bit and not put too much pressure on him (allthough I doubt that really matters to the way he will perform, that has more to do with getting the right feeling back again, the right touches on the ball, reflexes, etc., the stuff that comes with regular playing time).

@Carlos,

Funny, the French player that I thought of was Luis Fernandez, not Tigana. Maybe Jan will tell us we’re both right. ;)

Re: VDV. I think he is necessary in the starting lineup. Sneijder, VP, Robben are all forward push, and amazing skills, but VDv, along with his considerable skills, seems to be the guy who is always looking for a solution; the flick, the through ball, the popping up in front of goal. Oranje will need a player like that against the packed defenses of the WC.

It seems like it comes down to making the choice between two def. holding mf’s plus Kuyt on the right or sacrificing one of those three for VDV. I think MVB is necessary; given his leadership, experience, toughness, and ball skills. In the end as much as I like Kuyt (and I’m a huge fan), given our defense, I’d prefer DeJong in front of it providing cover. If VDV was pushed back into a holding spot, some of what he brings is diminshed by the increased defensive responsibilites. I’d put him nominally at Kuyt’s spot, but give him the license to go wherever he wants—as was done with Ronald De Boer in ‘98.

Sol you’re so logic . I partially agree with you .
Well , there are 3 possibilities in persie’s case :
- the worst one is persie may not be the player we used to see ever again , just like michael owen :( , god forbid !!
- the best one is that persie will play good with arsenal for a month before the worldcup , gain his form , then he impresses with the dutch in SA . (like van basten)
- the realistic one is that persie won’t be at his best by the first games in the wc , but he will get his form gradually and reach his peak against brasil in quarter- finals :p ( looks nice too , doesn’t it ? :D ) , actually thanks god we’re not in a difficult group , so we won’t need to be in our best in the first stage of the tournment , we can improve gradually , unlike all the tournments we played in the last 10 years . We were always in the group of death !! EC 2000 with FRANCE , EC 2004 with CZECH REP. & GERMANY , WC 2006 ARGENTINA & IVORY COAST , EC 2008 ITALY & FRANCE …

@ Sol, I wouldn’t call V.Wolfswinkel a midget xD, he’s a skinny one, not that strong, but he’s quite a reasonable height.

If someone would like to know, Marko Matic or as he is known now, Marko Vejinovic, actually played pretty well for Heracles, and he might actually be developing as he should be. Good news for every oranje fan. :)

I, for one, hope van Persie will make a great comeback, partially because I am going to start playing football again this week after 4 months of not playing due to torn ankle ligaments. :P

BTW on the left back thing, I do think Wilfred Bouma, given his experience would be a more logical choice to take instead of Dwight Tiendalli etc.
But if we’re gonna take an unexperienced LB, I’d say Erik Pieters has the best credentials at the moment, before Tiendalli and others, he has been pretty solid for PSV, and increasingly better coming forward.

for the Guardian live report: ‘85 min: Babel then passees it straight to Rodallega who shoots high and wide from 25 yards. I don’t know why Babel was on the bench. With passing like that he is surely worth a place in the starting XI

83 min: Babel is immediately into the action with a strong rumn down the left before freeing Insua but his cross is headed clear

82 min: Changes for both sides. Ryan Babel replaces Kuyt for Liverpool, while Hendry Thomas comes on for the injured Diame’

That why I don’t like Babel. He has got action, but fairly limited because of a chocolate left leg, and I have always thought his passing was terrible. It’s always running with a ball, cutting to his right, shooting. Every right back can read that trick.

Alex, I just checked vWolfswinkel’s height, you’re right, he’s actually not that small, I guess he just looks smaller than the other guys because the other guys (Hunter, S. de Jong) are stronger in the airduels (perhaps more to do with spring as well as physical strength).

I’m glad I missed Kuyt’s match yesterday (I don’t miss a lot lately now that I’ve found all those streams), since Liverpool lost again I assume he was as entertaining as usual, probably a lot of crosses that never looked like they were going to make it passed the defenders anyway (unless you have a brilliant moment from your striker that allows him to make something out of those hopeless crosses coming in from the right).

At the start of this season my main concerns for Oranje were vBommel, vBronckhorst, Heitinga and Kuyt (I’m conveniently skipping Engelaar, Babel and Affelay, because they’re nowhere near my Oranje team, Engelaar comes closest). Of those only Kuyt is left for me to worry about. The others have proven themselves to me this season.

Sorry to come back to that name again, but what can I say, he was the only one who played yesterday (again, not counting Babel as an Oranje player).

Thanks for the response, Jan. My “leaving” the blog had nothing to do with the blog, Jan, but everything to do with my commitments to other matters. Your blog is fantastic, and has improved markedly since I last checked in.

As to the Ajax de Jong, I am not familiar with this player, but he sounds as if he is improving and I do think the Dutch will need strong attackers to go anywhere in the WC. “We” are in a fairly strong group, with Denmark and Cameroon being teams that should not be underestimated. The run-up friendlies do not give one a sense that the Dutch will be ready to compete at the highest level, but then again, they always seem to do this to us–uninspired matches for a while, then they turn on the engine and play the way we want them to play. Time will tell–soon!

I have to admit, I haven’t seen much of vBronckhorst and Feyenoord’s games, just a couple of the big games, like Ajax-Feyenoord.

So I guess vBronckhorst is still just on the my worry list, but not at the top of my worry list anymore.

chiropractic internet marketing Time is most valuable thing in man’s life. Life is nothing but a period of time. So to make use of time is to make the most of life. Time once gone, is gone for ever. Time always passes for ever. It can never be called back with any sacrifice. Success of life depends on the right use of time. Those who waste time for nothing, can never prosper in life. So everyone should be careful to do his duty in time.
