Next up Mexico

May 31st, 2006 | By: Mike | 31 Comments »

The odds look favourable for a Dutch win against Mexico. What will be the key to a good performance against Mexico? Who needs to shine? What do you predict the result will be?

I think Babel and Kuyt will get their chances along with van der Vaart (hopefully). If Landzaat starts and puts in a good performance he will be a starter in Germany. I also predict a 3-1 final score. Mexico will score first early in the first half.

by the way, some one threw a comment yesterday that the dutch u_21 are going to lose against france in the semifinal, i just wanted to tell him that we’re leading 2_0 at the end of the first half.

You’re right alaa.. I suppose it’s only a little comforting that van Basten started with the B team.

Only Sneider, van Persie and Kromkamp played against Cameroon.

Van Persie is looking impressive again, though..

Like I said YESTERDAy.. I’m watching the game right now.. Holland understimated the mexicans. Holland is playing like a scared little kid. They are playing like if they are up 3-2 in a very important game. The keeper has touched the balll more times than any other player on the field.
Like i said yesterday,

2-0 MEXICO

OH YEAH…

(by the way, nice header by our star MR.9 9gret goal))

Ouch, Louie.. How’s that crow sandwich?

Getting beat by a B team that’s scared little kid.. Can’t be too good for the confidence. :)

B team… I don’t think so.
mexico had 6 Subs come in in the second half. The coach was trying out a random formation. A totally new defense and mid. the only thing i can say is that it was a good friendly. I still think the rest of the world understimates mexico.
negatives (holland)
this game shold of been 5-1 , holland can’t afford to loose three WIDE OPEN opportunities like that. I’m sorry, i rather be Mexico right now. Loosing because of sub formations. Instead of missin 3 HUge and Easy opportunities. Plus the defense was confused by Mexicos Corners.

Positives. (holland)
great execution the second half, what was the coach thinking in the frst half.

Overall When these two teams square off in the second round. i say they go to penalties.

And of course Mexico has an edge because of it’s keeper.

@Louie

I agree Holland’s performance was flat and the missed changes were shameful.

But if Holland and Mexico do play in the round of 16 it will be a different game.

Only three of our starters played today (sneider, v Persie and Krompkamp)

It was a great game, Holland played good but still i think there should be some improvements, especiallly in the offense.
Babel missed the goal in many occasions and Kuyyt is a bit slow, atleast slower than the mexican defense.Defense was great, but u have seen a silly mistake has cost us the first goal…
i think the dutch team dominated the possession, and that was totally amazing. the mexicans had no chance ever to touch the ball. However they didnot dominate the game…

@daniel..
(i like this idea)

Anyway.. you are correct, I think it is going to be a great game when and If they face off.
to be honest friendlies and such crap for fans. The two teams rarely play woth their best on the line.
For example, how many Mexicans fans knew that holland was playing with so few starters, and how many holland fans knew that Mexico had no defense on the second half. only if your two favorite teams are playing are you going to evaluate correctly. I was freeking out when the second half came. I was not suprised by the two goals in less than five minutes. In fact, i was hoping holland scored the five so Our coach never does that again!!
Anyway, we can sit here and predict Friendlies, but we really have no Idea. except for Mike here, (one lucky man)

The kick by sneider was amazing, it reminded me of rhonaldhinos kicks. Too bad Sanchez blocked it. I mean great by both players.

I hope holland goes on top and beats Argentina. But i was really concerend with what This B team was doing in the first half. Do they do this often? is this a strategic aproach to keep passing to the goalie? i hope that they don’t do that againts more offensive teams.

all in all. I like holland, it has always been my team when My real team got eliminated in the past.
I will continue to say that whatever team knocks out the dutch, That team will win the WC

good luck to you all in the first Round..

Oh Louie
c’mon MAN
i know you love Mexico and so do i but we both know Sanchez SUCKS!!!! at Penalties
that is his weakness
i dont know why you want it to come to that
I would rather face Argentina
just cause it would get so heated!!!

LOL … Ok my turn to analyze now :)

Unlike after the first match against cameroon, I feel much more confident now about our performance.
There are so many good points to mention:

1) Our midfield has improved a lot; and i have to congratulate sneijder on an extraordinary performance tonight. He was truly amazing; and if u watch the match again you will see that he was the one that created or started most of our chances. A very considerable improvement from the last game..
Maduro was good; needs a stonger push to boost his confidence. The guy has talent; but little experience and confidence.. (he was one of the players that contributed to the back passing).. But nevertheless he played a good defensive role. Landzaat was also good, most of the time. But im mainly happy about sneijder’s performance. Guys try to watch the game again and look how many great forward passes he pulled tonight.

2) We finally got to see the works of Kuyt. Yes he is usually a bit slow; but i think he might have appeared even more slow tongiht than usually because the Mexicans are themselves really fast. However, Kuyt is very tough and rigid. And on several occasions looked dominant and was able to create chances as well. Good performance also, I think.

3) Remember guys. This is the Dutch second line-up. Van Basten I think was mainly looking for individuals to fit and integrate in the first line-up we saw against Cameroon.
I’m sure Vna Basten will show us a synthesis line-up on sunday against australia. I think sneijder, boulahrouz, maduro/landzaat, Krompkamp, Kuyt will all play again on sunday whether as a starter or substitute.

One bad point to re-mention over and over again : the excessive backpassing, due mainly to the lack of condifence and experience in midfield.. We should overcome that. The more we backpass the more we will invite the opposite team to close down on us. Seedorf or Davids would have solved this problem, I think. one could argue that Davids is not in his prime anymore; but i dont think the same can be said for Seedorf. I would have definitely included him in the squad.. He’s been an indispensable asset for AC Milan this last season, with 36 appearances.
Van Basten should have included one of the two i think.. One player alone does not affect the whole team spirit that much.. He would have been indirectly forced to integrate himself.

Anyway, whats done is done. it was good match for holland tonight.. Hope they can keep progressing and improving, and hope van der vaart recovers asap.

@Rami

while Seedorf is a great player and always performs well for AC Milan, he really doesnt fit into a 4-3-3 system as well and i think that he could on his own spoil the team spirit (you know how the saying goes, it only takes one rotten apple…). recall how he argued with advocaat (and criticised him) at euro2004 because he was convinced that he should be playing attacking mid in a diamond shaped midfield while advocaat wanted him to play on the right of a 3-man midfield…the guy wouldn’t buy in to van basten’s system. he’s a great player, but not for oranje.

@louie

Point taken. I had no idea that the Mexican coach had made that many changes to the defense.

In both of the Holland goals the players were wide open.

Good luck to Mexico as well. Let’s hope we meet again in the round of 16!

The Dutch played a much more flowing and fluid style of posession football than in their previous 2 matches i think (barring the 1st half). Chances were created but many opportunities were squandered… No need to fear though, i’m confident that come the 1st match all the nuts and bolts will be in place.
