1) Surprisingly enough, the first person to be sent off in a CL final was indeed Jens Lehmann and not before the 2005-06 final (arsenal-barca). Dirk and Igor got it spot on.

2) Carlos Caszely from Chile was the first player to be sent off in a WC tournament. This also didn’t happen until 1974 in West Germany.

3) Dirk has a few good points regarding this question. It should have been more specific (prof vs amateur, still playing soccer etc). I was actually looking for just the official FIFA version but I will give you the complete answers. According to FIFA, the world’s oldest soccer club is Sheffield FC (founded in 1857). Sheffield FC has no relations to Sheff United or Sheff Wednesday, still exists today and play (soccer) in the amatuer leagues in UK. However, what is generally considered the oldest soccer club still playing some sort of organized soccer happens to be Cambridge University (1856). The oldest professional club still playing is Notts County (formerly Nottingham Football Club, founded in 1862). As Dirk interestingly points out Barnes is questionably one of the earliest, but there is actually quite a bit of doubt about when they were formed. The club claims 1836, but the first actually recorded result was not until 1862…Besides, it is now a Rugby club anyway so it doesn’t count in my book anymore. Hibernian was not a bad guess, as they were founded in 1875 but are not even Scotland’s oldest professional club. That title goes to Queens Park (nothing to do with QPR in London…), who was founded in 1867 and as such is the oldest professional club outside of England…Phew, there goes todays history lesson…

4) The Russian olympic champion coaching Dynamo Kiev was Valerij Borzov. The 100m sprint winner in the 1972 Olympics. The interesting part about that is that Borzov was responsible for coaching Oleg Blokhin, arguably Kiev’s most famous player ever (later became the manager for current Ukraine). Oleg in his time was quite possibly the world’s fastest footballer having posted several sub 11 seconds 100m dashes, and he could play too.

5) In the 1986 WC FIFA actually banned teams from swapping shirts after the game…The bizarre reason for this was that they did not to see any players “bare their chests”. Obviously that was a bad idea. Come to think of it, I don’t recall seeing any ladies swap shirts…Wouldn’t be a bad idea to get the attendance level up for female soccer though. Although there does not seem to be “too much there to be seen” in the first place.

6) Igor got this one. 1913 was the first year keepers were required to wear a different coloured top from the rest of the team

7) VFB Stuttgart’s team captain and German international Robert Schlienz in the 50′ies is a pretty remarkable story. As a player in his early twenties he had his arm amputated after a nasty car accident. He later became the team captain of the team, leading them to two German titles and actually playing 3 times for Germany, including once against England! Their stadium is named after him. Jan, not sure about if he was a woman and had a sex change operation (you may know more about him than I do:-), but if wouldn’t put anything past the Germans…
