NED vs. POR: Starting Eleven

June 25th, 2006 | By: Mike | 21 Comments »

Lining up against Portugal in Nuremburg today will be:

E. van der Sar

J. Mathijsen
A. Ooijer
K. Boulahrouz
G. van Bronckhorst

M. van Bommel
P. Cocu
W. Sneijder

R. van Persie
D. Kuyt
A. Robben

There are a couple surprises. Mathijsen is retained and Heitinga sacrificed for Boulahrouz. van Bommel keeps his place and Kuyt replaces van Nistelrooy. It’s a gutsy move by van Basten and we’ll see how it works out. Not long to go now.

[...] 30 minutes to go: According to the Dutch team blog, Kuyt is replacing Van Nistelrooy up front. This is a surprise to me as I’ve been very unimpressed by Kuyt. Van Nistelrooy hasn’t exactly set the tournament on fire either, but he has scored once already and is a proven goal-poacher. What has Kuyt done to justify his inclusion? I don’t know, but if you do, please leave a comment. I’m all ears - just like Cocu. [...]

First 15 minutes are ok. Good chances to shoot for Bommel, Robben and van Persie. Robben has been caught diving again. And Boulah injured Ronaldo. No real threats from Portugal other than a slip up from Sar.

Maniche did it again. 1-0 down, but early on in the match, so we need to score anyhow.

Costinha should have been out on the tackle to Oiijer so good riddance.

Kuyt is playing lost and overlapping a lot with RvP and Robben. It’s time for RvN to replace Kuyt.

I thought it wasn’t that bad. Persie should ‘ve scored with the inside of the left foot instead of the outside. And Robben deserved a penalty after Valente’s crazy challenge. Portugal makes it hard for us - and anu team I’d say - to play attractive. It’s about winning now. We do get chances and we will get them more in the next 45 minutes. I’m quite hopeful…

the referees are getting worse as games go on, the referees are deciding the outcome of these games rather than the football. a complete disgrace!

That ref totally ruined what was going to be a wonderful game with lovely attacking football. He started off immediately with stupid yellow cards and it just ruined the game. Ivanov go home. In general, I am terribly terribly dissappointed by all the refs at this tournament.

As far as Figo goes. Figo, you need to retire from international football and go the hell home. I think portugal has some likable players, but you ruin it for them. You pretentious bastard.

Hands up for Deco and Van Bronckhorst on the sideline btw…

I can’t get over how poorly this game was officiated. Absolutely terrible. Finally, get this idiot Sepp Blatter out of there and put someone competent in. He looks like a mobster.

Well, my fellow Oranje, …. this is it.

This had ruined all of my mood, it’s one thing if you lose but this match was ruined by bad refereeing all around, all started from the w@nker Luis Figo acting (somebody nominates him for an Oscar next year?). After that, the match just went down the drain.

With that said, I guess the key for us today is that Robben did not really “show up”. I also don’t understand what was on MvB’s mind with his selection of replacement players in the 2nd half. Kuyt should have scored, Cocu was unlucky hitting the cross bar, etc.

Another disappointing year, another 2 years of waiting, see you all in EURO 2008 — I’m out of this blog.

GO ORANJE!

Before I go:

Men of the Match - presented by your loyal Oranje –H:

DECO
GIOVANNI VAN BRONCKHORST

I still feel sick in my stomach by this match/this referee/Luis Figo.

Leaving Van Niselroy out of the Dutch starting line up was a disaster. Big mistake. He could have made a huge difference.

You had Ruud Van Nisteroy sitting on the bench, the top scorer at Man Utd… Can anyone please tell me why wasn’t he playing, or even brought on during the match? I just cannot understand this.
