Most Beautiful Goal in the World

May 16th, 2007 | By: Jan | 36 Comments »

You can sing it on the tune of “Most beautiful Girl in the World” by that geezer….ah…well, Rod McKuen or something… Hey, did you happen to see the most beautiful blablabla…

I think Goose started this thread….what’s the best Oranje goal ever… I really had to think for a while.

Coz, there’s beautiful goals (Bosman scored a couple of crackers against Malta for instance) and there’s important goals (Taument in WC 94) and there’s goals that are both (Van Basten’s 2-0 against Russia in the EC 88, Bergkamp’s goal against Argentina of course). Most of us remember the goals scored in the WC’s and EC’s but we did see beauts scored in qualification matches (Cruyff vs Jean Marie Pfaff, Gio against Portugal)…

So…let’s see what you think?

Goose, please re-post your Top 10 ok?

I liked the goals Gullit and Van Basten scored against Ireland in 1983 (was it 1983). 2-0 down at half time. 2-3 victory thanks to the two youngster. Or the Dennis Bergkamp goal against Germany in the EC92. A Special One was Wim Kiefts 1-0 against Ireland at the EC88. Or how ’bout Arie Haan rockets in the WC78?

Bring it on!

hmmm … interesting goals Jan.

id like to post my favorite top ten of goals ive seen.. And since im 23, havent seen much before 94 lets say hehe.. So im starting there.

Also, although u dont mention whether they should be goals of the national squad, i guess this is what you are hinting at…

My top 10, not necessarily for their beauty, mainly for their significance

10- van persie v/s ivory coast in 2006 (relieved so much tension, i screamed like never before after he scored this goal)

9 - Kluivert v/s yugoslavia in 2000 (an ode to kluivert’s tourney, the best of his amazing 5 goals)

8 - Ruud van Nistelrooy v/s Germany in 2004 (ruuds best goal in a major tourney - what an equalizer)

7 - Kluivert v/s England in 1996 (although we lost miserably to england 4-1 that day, the consolation goal is just one of the many beautiful partnership goals between bergkamp and kluivert)

6 - edgard davids v/s yugoslavia in 1998 (no one, i think, can forget this goal)

5 - frank de boer v/s france in 2000 (great free kick)

4 - Kluivert v/s Brazil in 1998 (very important goal, for many reasons, illusions of a possible final)

3 - overmars v/s yugoslavia in 2000 (overmars’ best)

2 - wim Jonk v/s Saudi Arabia in 1994 (i cant forget how he stood there afterwards, motionless..)

1 - Bergkamp v/s Argentina in 1998 (no comment!!)

Oh yeah, Rami. Remember them all. De Boer’s free kick was great, but I didn’t list it because it didn’t really matter at that stage. I like Davids’ goal against Yugo also because of the embrace with Hiddink. Two years earlier he hated him :-). Great list!

Some history we have here with this goals. I have been trying to put together my top 10 goals but I just couldn’t do it.
By only remembering this goals I want to cry, so much beauty and emotions mixed at once.
I have 21 years of age and I have followed the Dutch team since the 1994 WK and the most beautiful goal I have watched with no doubt was Bergkamp’s goal against Argentina, poor Ayala he is a good defender but with Bergkamp he looked like a kid.
If I had seen Marco’s goal in the 1988 final (live) I would have died of a heart attack hahahahaha.

@Jan; hope youre joking on Bogarde and Melchiot, these are just two big black guys who only LOOK solid..Bogarde just played for the money (like 4 years on the bench just collecting, hes a guy who really believed it was all about him..remember the tittle of his autobiografie ‘deze neger buigt voor niemand = ‘this negro will bent for nobody’..heres a guy who fought that if you critized him you would critize him cause he was black… hes a disgusting man and person and im so very glad ill never have to listen to his bullshit anymore..what a total wanker he is..

btw; never trust a defender with dreadlocks!!!

@Rami: how did that Jonk goal go?? cant remember..

Haha :-), no, i wasn’t joking. I like that dreadlock thing, though. No, really… Bogarde was tough, fast and ruthless. I like that in defenders. Claudio Gentile, Huub Stevens, Stuart Pearce, Win Rijsbergen, Jaap Stam, Vierchowod, Tony Adams, John Terry… The beauty of defending. Bogarde was a nutcase for sure, but you’d rather have him with you then against you.

Goose… I checked the posts that are waiting moderation and there is nothing from you. Normally, all your posts are sort of swayed through to the site, no worries. So, I’m not sure what happened to it… Sorry mate…

@Jan; thats to bad, it took me almost a day to find most of the goals..ill end this one with the Haan goal..
agree that the defender you name are all very intimidating but they are defenders only, theyre no use in building to attack..Stevens was just a kicker (wasnt it Kees Tol from Az that he kicked balck and bue after the former had scored against Psv?).. Stam looks impressive but he hasnt given a decent cross all his footballing life (sorry JJStam)..
lost track of Melchiot to be honest, ill give him a change as long as he shaves of his dreadlocks..the only footballer who was/is aload to weare them is Gullit!!!

Haan v Italy WC78:

@Jan,
I haven’t seen melchiot play in a while so i can’t really comment on his form, and although i have never been a fan of his, I was more surprised than anything else to see him included in the team. we can certainly use a strong stopper, so i’m glad to hear that you think he’ll be a good addition to oranje.

Im actually glad that Bouma has be re-admitted to the squad. Always thought he was a fine defender. Recent years were so-so, i agree, but under his new manager in aston villa, hes right back up there..
Hope to see him in action in the upcoming friendlies.

@Rami; actually saw bouma play live at Anfield few months ago..he played very solid (and Kuyt scored the opener!), think he started as a midfieldplayer and then Erik Gerets made him a defender so i think hes also able to bring the ball in play from the back and know has grown stronger in the Prem.Leg..
btw; that Overmars goal you name is it the one when he turnes inside? Seem to somehowe have blocked out al my euro2000 memories,
btw2; i dont remember the Jonk goal but i do remember than during the WC Wim Jonk lost his best friend in Holland in a car crash, that could be the reason for his motionless standing

@Jan; nr4 is the one where we trailed 2-0 in Ireland after the first half, then they changed to 4-3-3 and won 3-2. vanBasten scored a header from a corner and Gullit one with the outside..vanBasten tried a handstand while celebrating and almost broke his neck!, saw it on video, too young to remember..forgot about de deWit goal, so sad that a talent like that got so ill, great goal

well have a (bit outdated) very funny tube on vanBasten..check it out

As for Jonk, Im pretty sure that the “motionless standing with one arm high up” is Jonk’s trademark celebration. Socres a goal, and then Cool as Ice..

Versus Saudi Arabia In 94 was probably just the first time i saw him do that.. It was ana amazing sigh!!! :)

Hi Iam Ishmael from Australia. I lived in Lebanon long time. I love football and like Dutch football, but I think most players now are worse than players from the past. I like Van Basten and Wouters and Koeman. We watch AC Milan always. Me think best goals are from Van Basten and Cruyff always, but I like best goal ever is Dick Nananga in WC78 finals. He ugly player can not do football but he was the only player against Argentina to match Kempes.

yea he did.. but that goal was not as beautiful, partially because, as u mentioned, the irish goalie was supposed to catch it.

the one against saudi arabia however was just one hell of a cracker !!

its a shame i cant seem to find highlights of the netherlands goals in wc94 anywhere. Anyone?

yeah, Pat Bonner was the goalie right??

Ill have a look for some W94 stuff..remember the Bergkamp goal against Brasil in the quarterfinal?? We really had a change of beating thoose damned brasilians (again, like 4 years later), i remember that terrible Dunga free-kick after a foul was made on Overmars(?) which the ref didnt see and gave a freekick to Brasil…another wasted change for Oranej

Hi Ishmael, welcome mate. You are welcome :-). Dick Nanninga eh? Man, that was typical guy. What was he, a farmers’ hand, a post delivery man, can’t remember… He did score in the WC finals, for sure. Not many people, let alone Dutch people, can say that….
