The Spurs sack Martin Jol
Martin Jol is not longer manager of Tottenham Hotspur. The troubled coach, who was fighting allegations that his board wanted to get rid of him, was sacked after the UEFA Cup match against Getafe. His last hurrah was managing his team against the Michael Laudrup coached Getafe. Spurs lost 1-2.
Apparently, the decision to sack him was taken already before the match. During the match, the news seeped out to the fans and the technical staff. This prompted the Spurs fans to community-sing a number of Jol-dedicated songs, which brought tears to Jol’s eyes on the bench.
Jol coached the Spurs since november 2004, when he took over from Santini. The former Bayern Munich player led the team to the 5th spot in 05/06 and took the fourth spot last season for quite some time, only to lose it to Liverpool on the last day of the season, thereby missing the CL qualifiers.
Martin Jol will undoubtedly be on the wishlist of several clubs in England, Holland (Ajax, KNVB) and other European countries.

Real shame, the Tottenham board completely sabotaged the season for Jol. I liked him, and I enjoyed watching spurs play under him last season. This season has been terrible though (the fault of the board I think), and unfortunately it was just not possible for Jol to be the coach anymore. But maybe good news for us.. KNVB coach? who knows..

Jol’s golden handshake will be 6 Million Euros… Not bad… I’d be happy to be sacked… Got to get the job first, of course. But yeah, Jol got two new players last summer he didn’t want. And the player he desperately wanted- Petrov - wasn’t signed. He is the best man for Man City week after week. Jol played his cards right. The board tried to pester him out, so they didn’t need to pay the exit fee… HAHA!

I wouldnt say that Petrov is the best in City week after week, but he’s good. Elano is clearly better tough.

In an interview, Jol said that he didn’t know about his sacking until after the match. His nephew was with him and he told him in the tunnel what had happened. He went into the dressing room, where the players applauded him, which was an emotional moment for Jol. But he doesn’t blame the club or the chairman and said the Spurs have been good to him and he’ll always have a soft spot blablablabla. He also said he doesn’t want to leave England. His daughter goes to school in London and they love the life in England. So, no Ajax I suppose, but most likely another EPL club…

Man, you know for some reason I’ve always been a fan of Spurs, particularly as my “B” team, but their treatment of Jol has soured me. The board is a bunch of pecker-woods. They have now become my “only if I hate the other team more” team. Which is a lower middle of the table sort of team, ironically which is where they will end up at the end of this season.

It will be interesting to see where Jol ends up….Ajax?…Oranje?…a different PL club? Davids puts the blame on Jol for the recent Spurs start:

I tend to agree with Davids on this point. Depsite all the behind the scenes drama, Spurs have way too much talent to still be in the relegation zone at 7 points. Inexcusable.
I think it was a mistake of Jol to let Davids go(Spurs could definetely use a Davids type right now), however there seems to be a bit of a row between the two. Do you have any info on that Jan??
