Marco van Basten’s hollow words
So what did the Oranje trip to Asia amount to? The debut for Engelaar and Slory. Ok. What else? Ah, Gio van Bronckhorst thought South Korea is a nice country. Good. And Huntelaar is the most popular boy in the group, according to several Korean maidens…
The actual confrontations on the pitch did not result in a lot of wisdom.
Mario Melchiot is an ok option for the right back position. Slory can run fast. We knew that already, just like we knew Kuyt would work his ass off. And he really has to, since Ruud van Gol is back in Marco’s heart.
But is that all? SBS6, usually following Oranje as a horny teenager in a stripjoint, even played it cool and master analyst did what all players and coaches should have done: he was absent, on holiday.
Such an act of rebellion was needed from our team manager Van Basten. When he was appointed in 2004 he opposed all those trips for money. He scorned the fully booked playing calendar which – in his eyes – had a negative impact on the quality of play and the physical health of his players. The strong words now appeared to be hollow words.
The former Best Striker in the World is now one of the whores, chasing dollars for the Dutch Football Federation. Was it a coincidence that one thing got more exposure than the vicious sprints of Slory? Yes, that would be the logo of the company that knits the jerseys of both Oranje and South Korea. And presumably in some sweatshop in Asia.
But there was also some good news. Oranje stayed in the Oriental Hotel in Bangkok, one of the top 10 best hotels in the world. And come on, the coup d’etat was already 8 months ago and all the bombs that kill innocent civilians go off a bit more to the south. So, our boys were able to enjoy a good night’s sleep. So Klaas Jan Huntelaar could dream his dreams…sitting on the border of a quiet Dutch stream… Fishing…

The other good news about the trip is that it gave us all here at the Netherlands worldcupblog something to talk about. How could Peter have missed that important point ![]()

Other good news is that the players got more international experience, that they got to play together and that they get to feel some heat like they will get to feel in South Africa 2010.
