Makaay Still Has Hope

March 31st, 2006 | By: WC Bob | 11 Comments »

The Bayern Munich striker Roy Makaay thinks he still has a shot of making the final 23 in Germany. This might be news to coach Marco van Basten who has all but ignored Makaay recently and who has a stable of forwards from which to choose. I think Makaay is a longshot at best and will only make the cut if there’s an injury or two.

For me Makaay almost no chance this time.He got some special finishing skills but its hard for him to have more favour over Ruud, Hasselink and Huntelaar.

Can anyone tell me the starting 11 for holland and most of the players for the 23. I am really confused at this point. Does Seedorf and Davids have a chance to make it?

There are lots of possibilities. These are the most popular options. I know there are more than 23. My starting eleven have stars with their names.

For Keeper: Van der Sar(*), Timmer, Stekeleneburg

Defense: Van Bronckhorst*, Opdam*, Mathijsen, Boulahrouz*, Kromkamp*, Vlaar, Heitinga, Melchiot.

Midfield: Van Bommel*, Van der Vaart*, Landzaat, Cocu*, Sneijder, Davids(not likely), Maduro, Hofs.

Attack: Van Nistelrooy*, Kuijt*, Robben*, Babel, Van Persie, Huntelaar, Castelen.

The starting are eleven or so that we can be sure of but there are lots of options for the extra spots, some more likely than others.

Agree with you for starting 11 Mike. But I don’t think Heitinga, Melchiot, Vlaar and Hofs will be in the squad & Babel has only little chance too. Here are my expected 23 leaving GKs the same.
RB(Kromkamp, De Jong) CBR(Opdam, Mathijsen) CBL(Boulahrouz, Maduro) LB( Van Bronckhorst, Eanualson)
Midfield (Van Bommel,Sneijder) (Cocu, Landzaat) (Van der Vaart,Davids)
Forwards (Kuyt,Castelen ) (Ruud, Huntelaar) (Robbens, Persie).
One Possibility is Hasselink instead of Castelen or Davids

You may be right about Davids. For some reason I thought he hadn’t started in quite a while but he’s actually had a good run of games. He and Cocu would bring a lot of experience.

I thought Maduro was a central midfield player? I haven’t seen an Ajax game in quite a while but I thought Van Basten has used him in the centre of midfield?

I don’t think V. of Hesselink will make it. There are too many other players in his position. Also, Emanuelson is not a regular starter so I’m not sure. And why not Heitinga?

Thanks guys! With those quality players in attack I think Makaay will be left out. I don’t see why Van Basten would include him, but is unfortunate because he is quality player.

I agree. I wouldn’t have a problem with Makaay being included as a means of adding experience to the squad. He’s quality but his form has hurt his chances. Its too bad really but oh well

I think Davids and Seedorf should go, both great players and can help the Dutch this World Cup with their experience. It probably won’t happen. I do like Van der Vaart and Ruud to carry the Dutch to glory. Cool uniforms too!!

Seedorf will never play for the Dutch again. He is known for having a terrible affect on team chemistry; he is very hard to manage and coach. Van Basten is too smart to let him in. That’s the same reason why Hasselbaink has not played for them in so long(despite his age). He’s just not a good player to have in the dressing room.

Hesselink don’t have skill or talent comparable to the top line Dutch strikers. But he got high physical strength and work rate that the others lack.
Maduro normally played at mid-field, yes.He played as center back in last two CL games against Inter & made some excellent blocks.
Heitinga played in right back position during Euro 2004. Basten may not like his inconsistancy.
Emnualson is too in experienced but LB is so scarced in orange.
Talking on Seedorf is truly tragic. The most complete Dutch player who never played well for NT.
He should pay back at his last chance for the forgiveness of his own fans.
