LA wants a sexy cooach
Ruud Gullit will make a spectacular return in professional football. Yesterday he signed a three-season deal with LA Galaxy, David Beckham’s club, as main coach.
Gullit will start the job on January 15. When Estelle Gullit was asked if her hubby would make 3 Mio euros per year she answered: “I don’t know what he will make, but I do know I will spend a lot!”.
Ruud Gullit always expressed the wish to return as coach in football. The last years, the former AC Milan star was mainly to be witnessed on the red carpet or in tv-talkshows, mingling with celebrities.
For the Gullits, a move to Hollywood is like a present from the Gods. David and Posh Beckham receive dozens of invites per week. And like Gullit will love to train with Becks, Estelle will love to wonder Rodeo Drive with Posh.
Ruud knows Beckham personally and is and was the only man to spend elaborate time with the superstar - both in England and Spain - interviewing him in depth. Gullit is also an associative of Beckham’s management.
American fans haven’t seen Gullit in action on the WC94. He clashed with team manager Advocaat days before the departure to the US and decided to stay home. The American public only remember Gullit from his imposing matches with AC Milan and Chelsea, where - as a coach - he coined the term “sexy football”.
Former players and Galaxy president Alexi Lalas said recently that he needed a “sexy coach” after Yallop’s demise.
Lalas: ,,We wanted a coach who will attract as much attention to the team as David as a player. And a coach who isn’t afraid to allow us to play attractive football. We have demanding fans.” Lalas expects Gullit to be extremely popular in LA. “Ruud has charisma, star power. That works here. Then, he’s got that huge career and all those wonderful clips of him as a player.”
That Gullit couln’t impress as a coach is not a problem. “We work in a team and I am sure we can cook something impressive up.”
LA Galaxy first wanted Jurgen Klinsmann who lives in California. But the former Germany team manager and striker appeared to be tough man to deal with. Beckham’s management advised Lalas to talk to Gullit.

The American MLS has improved a bit during the past two years, but only a bit. Beckham has brought, what Pele brought 30 years ago, attention to the program. Neither Pele nor Beckham improved, or will improve, the overall quality of soccer played in this country. Evidence our national team at the 2006 World Cup, and its recent mediocrity against quality opponents. It is for this and many other reasons that “serious” soccer (football) fans in the US follow with great interest and passion the European and British Isles programs, both national and league level.
So, the point of these comments is to suggest that Ruud Gullit will bring some additional “curb appeal” to the MLS, but that is all. I do not believe that his coaching skills are anything above average, and he will not turn the LA Galaxy into an exceptional team. It should be fun, however, to watch how Ruud and his wife become a part of the “Hollywood” culture, and whether he will attract even more fans, not fans of the sport but fans of the “event”.

Agree Bob, and for that reason, Gullit is a good choice. You don’t want Lippi, Wenger or Sacchi at LA Galaxy, I suppose. Gullit brings enough coaching skills and he has star power. With all the numbers in the us, they’re bound to come up with a great team sometime in the next ten years, I’d say…
