Kuyt is ready!!

June 24th, 2006 | By: Jan | 18 Comments »

Dirk Kuyt is about to do what he did all his career. Coming into a team from an underdog position. His weapons: an iron will, an ever positive attitude to life and a functional skill set acquired by hours and hours of training.
The last weeks were tough on Kuyt. The season finish with Feyenoord was sour, he hoped to play a part in grabbing the world cup but saw his spot go to Van Persie and due to that replacement, he also saw his hopes for a contract with a top club in England or Spain fade away. The training-sessions with the big guns convinced him even more that now is the time to take that step. But for that, it helps to play and score at the WC.
The Katwijk born striker will not complain. That’s just not Dirkie. And, he relates honestly: “Van Persie is the better winger. He’s got the skills and pace to pass full backs at any time. I’m different. I need to “feel” my opponent.” When Kuyt sensed that van Persie would start on the wing, he re-set his sights on the central strikers position. He dealt with his frustration by training even harder and putting in extra time on the training… Scoring goals.”

Two years ago, the Feyenoord working class hero was dressed in orange and cheered Oranje in the stadium in Portugal, when they played – and lost to – Portugal. “Ruud van Nistelrooy was my man. I always watched him. If I was on the stands during this WC, I’d wear a Van Nistelrooy jersey”.

“I remember that match well. I was sick of that loss. I couldn’t imagine I would be part of the squad 2 years onwards. I learned a lot from Gullit at Feyenoord. I loved it that he would spend hours with me, training on specific situations. Now, I do that with Marco and John (van ‘t Schip). And they put me in charge of leading the warming up before matches.”

Van Basten likes to work with Kuyt. The Dutch team manager: “It’s about responsibility. Most of our chaps are young. But Kuyt, despite his age, has the poisture of a seasoned international. He was Holland’s top scorer, played well for Feyenoord, has loads of clubs following him and he is part of the Dutch squad, still he doesn’t care about all that hype. He is fully focused on getting a better player and win games for Holland. My only worry with Kuyt is, that he sometimes takes it all too seriously. I need him to lighten up every now and then.”
“Yeah, Marco wanted me to stay happy, have fun and also not to train too hard. I started a fitness program, to gain strength. But Van Basten warned me for that… Use your strengths and use your weaknesses he said…”

Kuyt is one of the few I individually predicted would have an exceptional Cup. Without a lot of minutes, my prediction hasn’t looked good up to now, but I remain confident. I won’t cheer for van Basten in any case, though.

@Dave
Why won’t you cheer for Marco van Basten, I wonder? Are you that one person in the world that doesn’t like him?

Goose, I like the orange too.
All I know, is that if VB decides not to play RVNR, and DK instead, and the Dutch lose.
The finger pointing will begin in Holland.

Kyut is the most humble and hard working player in Orange. His class is nothing less than the other players too. If Basten could find a place for him at mid-field, there could be a different display.

@sphinx, your right about Kuyt’s attitude, but Kuyt in midfield???
that would cerntainly be interesting my friend..

think Kuyt will indeed start, well have more control of the ball up front im sure..

my friends im getting all excited but have strange feeling, same feeling i had in 2004 when we played Portugal (may their country dissapear in the sea, lol PedroP), if we go out i can have my peace with that cause were just not that good this time around.. HOPE IM WRONG..maybe well see Oranje like we use to see, but if not as long as the guys give their all im satisfied and im sure they do that!
Less then 24 hrs to go!!!!

Lets beat thoose Portugues a88holes!!!

If Kuyt starts then for betting men or women, lump on Portugal to qualify. This is just a story to bamboozle the opposition. There is no way Kuyt will take Van Nist place, if he comes on as sub and scores a winning goal, then fine but there is no way that DK starts unless Holland want to lose.

Dirk will start, look for Van Nistelroy to come in the second half, at that point the job will already be done. Kuyt will leave the field to thunderous applause for his contribution to the defeat of Portugal. Don’t be nervous oranje men and women. Portugal is scared we are confident. Hup holland Hup

It’s really sound Kyut to start this evening in place of Ruud. And Vns way come out as a sub later as Micha said.
Basten’s plan seems to take control at early stage and need more work rate.
Absense of VNS could be less threat to Portugal defence and could allow more built up to their attack ofcourse. But with Robben, Persie and Kyut all 3 players can change positions and could be more fluid.
Surely Basten will be more causious defensively to day. Starting Kyut instead of Ruud will help Mid-field domainany(or parity) at least, that’s the reason we lose to them at 2004.

Why did Van Basten choose Ruud?
Van Basten must regret his choice!

hey mara1ona easy on the blow buddy, seriously; where did you say this site of yours was that has all this secret behind the scenes dealing of the national team, cause i would like to read it, if it exists?
As for my wagering, your right, this world cup has not gone great, i can afford the money but the teams loss especially to portugal hurts alot. I sure hope England destroy them.
