Johan Neeskens doesnt recognize his ol’ Ajax…

Former Ajax star Johan Neeskens doesn’t get it anymore. The current Galatasaray assistant coach sees a team playing in the Ajax jersey, and in the Ajax stadium, but he doesn’t recognize Ajax anymore.
The Ajax of Nees is no more. Will it ever come back.
“It hurts to see it, in all honesty…” Neeskens says. There’s one simple fact that demonstrates how Ajax has alienated from it’s own self. “Twelve different coaches in ten seasons?!?” moans Rijkaard’s assistant. “That is not like Ajax at all. I wonder where the big vision has gone.”
Nees points at the globally envied youth development. “Ajax own youth was the foundation of the club. Not signing players from all over the world. And let’s face it: Dutch teams can’t buy the big players anymore! In our days, we had Vasovic, Blankenburg… Big names in their own competitions. Internationals. And sometimes you can get a player at a young age and mould him, like with Litmanen, Jesper Olsen, Soren Lerby and Finidi George. But a Chelsea player or a HSV player doesn’t come play for Ajax. Even players from FC Twente won’t make the step. So I say: focus on your youth development! The bonus is, you’ll get players who immediately know what to do within the Ajax style.”
A lot of foreign players arrived in the ArenA in the last years and almost as often they disappeared through the back door. With a loss. In certain cases, Ajax didn’t even see any transfer sum back.
“At a certain point, Ajax signed failed Argentines. What in the world would you do with them? Check out the talents in the youth. Give a 17 year old a break! Like Cruyff, Vanenburg, Kieft, Seedorf… I don’t think the foreign chaps are better and they’re most certainly more expensive.”
With Van der Vaart, Sneijder, Heitinga and Babel Ajax showed that it still can develop talent. “In Barca’s team of Van Gaal, Barca played with seven or eight players developed by Ajax! Will it ever return? I hope so, but time will tell. You’ll need a vision, and not just a short term one, it needs to be culture, strategy and lifestyle!”
The former Barca Toro also talks about the Ajax style. “4-3-3 was religion. But new coaches bring new systems and the link between youth and Ajax 1 is gone. And the next coach brings another system. The players won’t develop like that.”
After Van Basten’s resignation, Frank Rijkaard was named as his successor. If Frank would have said yes, Neeskens was without a doubt his first choice to assist him. Would the 57 year old penalty specialist have said yes? “I would have needed some time to think about that. It was never an option by the way. But it could have been, sure… I would have wanted to know what Ajax’ long term vision would be. And I would have wanted an indepth discussion about everything that went wrong in the past. I mean, buying full backs for millions of euros is plain silly. A club like Ajax needs to develop backs themselves.”

@Alex: Oh dear, that nearly made me guzzle my beer up through my nose.
I think there is a dentist or ten rubbing their hands in Madrid at the moment…

this is scandalous ,even more scandalous than the robinho story last year… our guy should leave without any hesitation even if they got smaller wages at their future clubs.
i’m sure that one or two of them will go to bayern. milan wants huntelaar, madrid ask 25million ,milan want to pay 18. drenthe probably will go to fiorentina. no news about vdv.
my list:
sneijder and robben or only sneijder – bayern
rvn – spurs or everon
drenthe – fiorentina
vdv – arsenal,hamburg,mu
huntelaar – milan or mu
robben – it would be nice if he came to barca, but this is a little bit problematic. 1: usually there is no direct transfer between the bastard club and barca. laporta is a gentleman, perez is not. it means that barca won’t try robben unless perez called laporta to buy him. laporta doesn’t like too much perez, his politics etc. 2. robben is injury-prone… but if he came, barca would be fantastic next season. they try to get villa as well. hoping that eto’o will stay 6 players would be for 3 positions: messi, eto’o,henry, bojan, robben, david villa. they want mascherano as well which means that behind the attacking line xavi, iniesta, yaya toure, keita, mascherano,s. busquets, hleb (he will stay) and gudjohnsen (if he stays) would candidate for 3 positions…
anyway our guys shouls leave this club. perez and valdano are disgusting. i have always hated real madrid and apparently it won’t change.

I couldn’t agree more, though i have the feeling one of them might actually stay at Madrid.
they threat their players like garbage, and the legendary V.Nistelrooij even gets put up for sale for a bargain price. ?
maybve Robben to Juventus, they’re looking for someone to fill up their left-flank aren’t they. He wouldn’t fit in Bundesliga. Though, it’s not likely, i’d love to see a dutchman, any dutchman in a Barca team again, V.d.Vaart, Robben or Sneijder, it wouldn’t matter.

BTw with all this talk about the Madrid outcasts. Babel could be moving as well, but haven’t heard about him for a while.

I totally agree with the last few comments. I too always hated Real and now we have another good reason to despise that club. Please Ribery go to Real so I can have that club to an even higher level. Our Dutch contingent must get out of there in a hurry. This is absolutely amazing. What is even more incredible is that Valdano and Perez are making all the decisions but nobody has heard of what Pellegrini wants. After all isn’t he the coach? I pity him as well.

BTW about Ajax, it’s the ever growing gap between PL, La liga, Serie A, Bundesliga and such that caused those failures:Elia, Braafheid, Mathijsen, Boulahrouz etc. Dutch eredivisie is at it’s max, AZ, Heerenveen, Twente, Ajax, Feyenoord, PSV and some othercan expand their stadiums a more or build a bit bigger ones, and betting deals could boost club incomes a bit. But other than that, KNVB are already forced to shrink the number of professional football clubs quite a bit, and they will be forced to look outside dutch borders within 4 seasons, if ever it’ll take at least 15-30 years for a dutch club to catch up with the european top clubs, even with fair play rules instated by UEFA and FIFA.

I like Pellegrini, it goes very well with Pasta.
Last time they tried the big time Galacticos they fell on their arse, and I sure they will do so again. Anyone think a relatively unproven coach like Pellegrini can handle those egos? You would a Sir Alex, Capello or even the Special one to handle all of that. Hell, even Scolari couldn’t handle the dressing room at Chelsea and the players got him fired. I wonder what odds I can get on Pellegrini sacked by Chrisitmas?
In any event, the news on Babel according to the Liverpool Echo and other sources is that Rafa has told his agent to look for something elsewhere but the price will need to be right. I expect him to go soon, but I have not heard any specific clubs mentioned yet. At least there is no offer on the table yet.

Actually, I never really understood Huntelaar’s choice to move to Real. He was ready for a move, but Madrid?.. It was clear he was a van Nistelrooij sub. (that was back then, of course they know have the great Benzema..) Anyway, I think he was confident that he was going to be so impressive he’d be playing always, as at Ajax. Problem is, he is really good but Real is just careless and too rich. It’s a shame really.

another problem that schuster was sacked. he loves dutch football and wanted to build an almost dutch team. huntelaar was his choice.
@Alex: i would like to see a dutchman in barcelona as well but to be honest i don’t know exactly who. the starting eleven is so perfect. maybe emmanuelson to replace abidal but the problem is that one flying back is enough and alves is the man. with two flying back the defence becomes more vulnerable,so this is the reason why abidal tactically fits to the system. robben would be great as well but thierry henry is still there and wants to stay two more years. he will play less but i’m sure that in important games he will be in the starting eleven. considering that villa will join the team and eto’o will stay it wouldn’t be the optimal solution for robben.
i’m sure that big teams are interested in our boys but they don’t want to pay much so they wait. one more thing: no teams want to buy 3 or 4 (”in a package”).

All the dutch players should follow the foot steps of robihno(it doest mean only to mancity)this guy(robhino) took a brave decision coz of the treatment of realmadrid.so no other option for our players.they have to act like men and they should leave.if they are performing good in other teams ofcourse their chance will come.eg Anelka
@ferenc may be RVP and vaart can get into barca team. If they they are considering wesley and roban,it will be a great help for both of them and both of them will learn how to play unselfish football.if any of them(real six) can get into MANU or barca will be a great for them and also i reckon it will be a great step for orange towards the WC .

Does anyone know if Gago is staying at Real ? He had the number 8 which Kaka has now ?

he’s taking number 5. he’s going nowhere.

“and yes i have one hope for the coming season. I hope barcelona keeps the same wonderful level and concentration they had last season and don’t lose their great level, just because I am sure if they keep their high level they are able to beat the hell out of real madrid again and again and again. because if they don’t people will be talking about the greatness of kaka, cr, benzema and maybe ribery. I juat want to see them get raped again by barcelona, and then I wanna see that bastard perez what he will tell his crazy fans!!!! only at that time I will feel satisfied after this humiliating way he is treating our oranje players. he makes it look like real madrid’s disasters were because of robben or sneijder or vdv. he just forgot that he had the worst defensive line in the history of soccer.”
I agree with each and every word of alaa… I wish the treatment meted out to our players by Real Madrid is met by some divine jusitice. Let the fakie -girlie CRon whine all his way through the season squeezing lemon into Perez’s eyes. Besides Kaka, none of the stars bought in will shine. Barca will maintain the momentum and continue to thrash RM hitting at the ball.
Our players VDV, RVN, Hunter, Robben, Sneijder will shine in other clubs and show their worth kicking goals at the “fuckingly worthless” club that thinks superstars will bring its glory. Perez will get his answer.
Jai Ho.

Real was so easy to hate before Old Horsey Face went there, it will be so much easier to hate them when all the Oranje leaves this summer!
I hope they all go to the EPL, much easier to see them on TV here in North America that way.
Perhaps the Eredivisie should drop down to 12 teams such as the SPL, the top players spread around fewer teams should strengthen all. That and fewer moves for great young talents should help Oranje too.

i would put
wesley and roban to barca-coz xavi and ineasta will teach them how to play unselfishly and total environment of barca will make them great players.
Rafa should go to MANU irrespective of the fee and amount.this will help our dutch national team for sure, offcourse it will help Manu also.
Hunter can move to milan or man city,he will get his reputation there.
Drenthe should come back to NEDs and should join Ajax-JOL or feynoord-Been.
Ruud should consider teams like everton, spurs, astonvilla and such like hardworking teams.this will help his fitness also.
besides
Ourliverpoolidian babel should think about AJax under martinjol if he wants to grow.

Tiju, you make perfect sense there, I can’t beleive you’re the same guy pimping Romeo all the time!
Do you think if VDV goes to ManScum he can convince Edwin to rejoin Oranje in time for WC-2010??

I am worried that EVDS may be beginning to be a bit past it. He is beginning to look like an old Peter Shilton to be honest. Don’t get me wrong, he is still very good, but it is a bit like the stock market, it is decline but when do you know when you have truly hit the bottom? His kicking was always terrible, but not it is beyond awful. His best part of the season last year was the EC, where he played superb.
What is worrysome to me is that he is still the best Dutch goalie there is by a mile.
Don’t be surprised if Man U grabs a new goalie with some of their Ronaldo money soon though.

I just have a few points that I was thinking of while reading the comments:
- People like to point out how horribly the Galacticos era ended last time around, but also don’t forget that it had great success in the beginning… Personally I hope it doesn’t have any success this time around if the Dutchies are all gone.
- Tiju: Robinho didn’t make a brave decision or act like a man last year. He was chasing after money and he is constantly acting like a spoilt little brat – this is not someone to model your behaviour after!
- I hope the Dutchies all find good clubs to play for and get to play regularly. I also really hope that Ruud goes to a club playing CL football, because I desperately want him to beat Raul’s CL goal scoring record. Raul only has it because he’s plays so many freaking games in the CL – Ruud has almost as many goals in half the games!
- Vaart at Arsenal might actually be a very nice fit… I’d like to see that I think!

@finnster01 thats an interesting comment about van der sar but how could you say his kicking has always been terrible? He has the best feet by far of any goalie in the world, I do not know which van der sar you have been watching for the past ten years. But in terms of goalkeeping for the oranje i think if vermeer continues to develop then he could be a solid goalkeeper, he definatly has the potential.

@David: I think I have been watching the same games as you my friend, and I am not the only one who has raised these sentiments regd his kicking even on this blog.
He just had direction problems, and now that his range is getting lower by his age, it is not his best part of his game. Mind you, if that is the biggest problem your goalkeeper has, you don’t have too much to worry about I suppose.
I am more worried about what is coming up through the ranks in Oranje. None of them (thegoalies) are convincing me they have what it takes to win a WC. I believe it is possible to win a WC without a world class keeper (Brazil has proven that), but more often that not, you really need to have one. Remember 1974? Couple that with a suspect defense, we may have to have to score 3-4 goals a game to win the tournament. Possible, but a tall order. We’re not going to play Iceland, Norway and Macedonia everyday.

Van Gaal will be very happy if Ribery leaves in exchange of Robben, Wesley and $.
