JC and the Apprentice Team Manager - by JK Rowling

Most fans are not happy with MvB as team manager. The reasons? They are listed prolificly on this blog… I won’t go into that.

Questions were raised on the position of the KNVB (Dutch Football Association). Let’s go back in history for that…

The KNVB saw some heavy waters in the past years. The first drama I’d like to go into, was the Sport7 f&*k-up…

Instead of selling the tv-rights to a public tv-station, some years ago the KNVB decided to go into a joint venture with a commercial cable exploiter to offer the football-broadcast themselves! Behind the decoder, as it’s called. No more public service, but after the big money. The public balked at the idea. The deal collapsed. Sport 7 never saw the light of day and the KNVB management was told to piss off.

It’s hard for the KNVB to find the right people to manage the federation. Why? 1. you need to have some sort of a football vision. There’s enough people who think they have that. 2. you need proven management skills, preferably in the sports world. This makes the list a bit shorter. 3. You need to be in need for work… If you are really a good manager, why run the KNVB for a mediocre salary if you can make top money working for a bank or an international consultancy firm? Most managers with a football background are in some way connected to a club anyway, leaving room only for burned out, mediocre manager-types who’d like to ooze power and want photo-opps with the likes of Cruyff and Hiddink.

Anyway, the KNVB had a good time with Arie van Eijden as their commercial manager. Van Eijden became available after he had to take the blame for Ajax’ tax-scandal (Arie is a former Ajax 1 player, former Royal Dutch Shell Manager and in those days former and crucified Ajax board-member). Van Eijden has a lot of respect in the Dutch football world and is one of those people who doesn’t care how much money he makes. He left Royal Dutch Shell and their salaries to work for his old love Ajax. Anyway, after the new Ajax board cleared his name, he was asked back to his first love and left the KNVB in the hands of former accountant Henk Kesler. Grey hair, brown suit, ferrte-like eyes and no connection with football whatsoever…

This man needed to replace Rijkaard after he surprisingly quit after “losing” the EC2000. Rijkaard had a goal: become EC2000 champs. When he failed, he decided to quit. Everyone, KNVB, players, fans wanted the former Ajax and AC Milan star to stay on board. True, he did make some strange sub-decisions but if De Boer and six others hadn’t missed their penalty kicks, Holland could’ve been the champs. The ball Jaap Stam hit from the spot is still not found!

The logical successor to Rijkaard was Louis van Gaal. He thought he was the best in the world, stunned fans with finger-lickin’ football with Ajax, snapped up the CL cup, the World Cup… What could go wrong?

Well, Oranje-Portugal and Portugal-Oranje… That’s what. When he failed to coach us to the WC2002 - where we could have done very well, since France, Argentina, Spain, England et al screwed up - he needed to go.

Again, Kesler had a problem to solve. Now what? Hiddink wasn’t available. The fans wanted Van Hanegem. Maybe Adriaanse. Foppe de Haan’s name was mentioned. Martin Jol. Even Sef Vergoosen. Bert van Marwijk… Kesler didn’t want Van Hanegem nor Adriaanse… Too much trouble. Foppe lacked charisma. So did Vergoossen. Too risky for the lawyer Kesler…

So, he decided to take the easy way out. Loyal and obedient but mostly dull Dick Advocaat was reeled back in. Nobody liked to see him back. So, Kesler had a masterstroke. If we accepted Dicky, he would throw in De Kromme as assistant coach. Hmmm…the fans went for that compromise…

But again, it didn’t work. Advocaat lacks vision, courage, swung, pizzazz, spark, balls and charisma. Willem started to moan and whine pretty quickly after being put in his place during a press conference by Advocaat and Holland couldn’t really impress in Portugal… So, again Kesler had a problem to solve. He could hardly sleep at night. Because he did want to hang on to his job.

Enter JC. JC has been courted to coach Oranje for years. He was screwed out of the job by Michels in 1990. In 1994 the KNVB didn’t want to meet his demands (and gave the job to Advocaat), etc etc. Now, Kesler thought….I can only win if I really seriously approach El Salvador. But Johan didn’t want to do it anymore. The stress, the pressure… And Johan is busy with other things (playing golf, advising Ajax and Barca, his charities). So JC said: I won’t do it. But I’ll help, if you want. And I think you should give Marco and Johnny the job. A fresh wind.

They follow my guidelines in football, JC said. No worries.

And Kesler thought: what do I have to lose…

So, yes… the KNVB is partly guilty. They didn’t make up their own mind. As they never do. But they chose the easy way out. Following JC. And therefore, it would be tough for the KNVB to now suddenly publicly drop their support for San Marco. They’ll have to ride it out.

And look at it this way: if the KNVB kicks Marco out, they will most certainly give the job to….yes….Dick Advocaat!!!

Nice one Jan…thanks…did you write this by yourself??

dont think Advokaat will be next in line..my prediction: Ronald Koeman (who i really dont like btw), my favo would be Hiddink or Jol but dont think any of those two will manage us in the near future..maybe vanmarwijk?? would be great for my cause than ill know that vanBommel will be back (btw. he and Makaay played really well last saterday against Shalke)

yes , very funny to hear..still think he will try with Oranje once more in the future..im sure hes very eager to prove everybody that 01-11-2001 was just very bad luck (altough we lost the qualification cause of the Portugal games where we were to arrogant…still not sure if vanGaal is a manager who can work with a group of players he sees only a few times a year as a group…like Adriaans he such a school teacher (i mean that in the most positive sence, haha)

btw: i have an intresting link for you, ill post it after this comment but tell you now so you can do your moderating duties (lol!!), maybe you already know this but alas..

Jan: very nice article summarizing perfectly the situation.
i’m agree with you, koeman would be a catastrophe and his team would play in a very defensive way… van gaal? i don’t like the person but his ajax did really well in the 90s (beside barca ajax is my other favourite team),but with barca and oranje he failed: the first had the best player of the world at its time and he couldn’t win any cl with them, the oranje 2000-2002 was also a group of talented and experienced players, but we all know the result… i have no idea if he would be good or bad,but probably better than mvb.
once in the future i would like to see rijkaard again as the coach, but not at the moment, because right now he’s at the place where he has to be.
and i think one day the great plaxer of the 90s will become coaches too. let’s see for ex the de boer brothers…

My favourite coach for the Netherlands would be:
1)Hiddink; 2)Louis van Gaal;
3)Rijkaard; 4)Koeman. I don’t think Martin Jol has the guts to be our coach and I’ve heard him saying that England has a better team than us so if he doesn’t trust his own players he can’t be the one to lead us. I’m ashamed of how some of you ppl can be laughing at van Gaal when he has been the most aggressive coach I’ve seen in the last 10 years, he won the CL with ajax and was also successful at Barcelona where he won La Liga and La Copa del Rey, since van Gaal left Barcelona they couldn’t win anything at all until Rijkaard arrived 6 years later or so and also remember that Barca isn’t Milan or Madrid who have won many Champions, Barca had only won it once.

@MR; nobodys laughing when it comes to his coaching and his results, im sure youll read that everybody is full of respect when it comes to vanGaal…but im not so sure if he makes a great manager of a national team..i always tought him to be that kind of manager that needs a young group to work with wich he can form and work with on a daily basis…it IS funny to name 5 countries in a clasule in your contract..(as it is funny to watch his pressconfrences after a lost game with AZ!)..i even heared that after a few drinks hes known to tell some great jokes!

Hello my friends…I am new at this page but I love the Dutch National Team as much as you do. For me it is simple, Marco van Basten has to be fired or resign himself because the team simply is not performing well at all and his team selection is crazy!
It seems Holland right now is not one of the best of Europe but that is totally wrong for me. If you make radical changes first firing the coach then I am sure the next coach will recall van Nistelrooy, van Bommel and Makaay, along with that he will offer Seedorf an important position in the squad and then you can have a very strong team again. Who can lead the team to a happy ending?
1- Hiddink: proven coach with Oranje and many national teams and clubs.
2- van Gaal: failed with Holland but can anyone remember the line ups vs Ireland and Portugal as locals?…van Gaal had more than 6 starters injured in those games. He has won everything at club level and the experienced players in the team have all been coached by van Gaal in the past and the younger guns will learn a lot with this great coach. He is too estrict sometimes, but look what AZ is doing right now!
3- Rijkaard: now he is an established and succesful coach
4- Koeman: I do not like his defensive attitude sometimes but at least he is a coach with Champions League experience, some logic and a lot more of character that San Marco
5- Fope de Haan: Knows most of the young players and won the Euro under 21´s. He can make a good mix between the experienced guys with the young players.

Holland has a lot of potential still guys but how can a team perform well if they do not have a coach that gives condidence to his playes and besides has fought with some strong players of the squad that retired of the team while he is on charge???For me we have some of the most promising players on the earth like van Persie who is gonna be a legend in some years. You will see. Imagine this team:

1- van der Sar
——————————–

2-Kromkamp 3-Boula 5-Emmanuelson

4- van Bommel
(Different position
for him but Rijkaard and Desailly played the last part of
the careers in this position and
they did it very cool, van Bommel has
——————————–
6- Afellay 8-Seedorf

7-Kuyt 11-Robben
——————————–
10-van Persie

9- van Nistelrooy

4-4-2

An explanation of the van Bommel positiong:(Different position for him but Rijkaard and Desailly played on that same position for their clubs and they did it very well. Van Bommel does not have the same technique as those guys but he still has good technique and can be a perfect conection between defence and midfield and when we attack ha can transform in to a holding midfielder while being attacked he will be a central defender that is gonna be tough to beat in the air. Afellay and Seedof will have offensive and defensive duties so when Seedorf attacks Afellay stays and viceversa while Robben and Kuyt will have mostly offensive duties on the flanks changing position constantly but following their full bakcs as well when they launch an attack. van Persie will play as shadow striker just like Bergkamp did with Kluivert and besides van Persie plays on that position for Arsenal. As lone striker is Ruud, perhaps after Euro 08 then you can give that position to Huntelaar but right now Ruud is 30 years old and you have to use him now because in 2 o 3 years ha can feel the age problem. Kuyt is a bet playing on the right but if he fails to live to the expectations then you can put there someone like Babel.
And with this line up you can have a good bench as well ready to take over if there are problems along the way. On the bench you will have Stekelenburg, Bouma, Gio, Mathijsen, Sneijder, van der Vaart, Zenden, Makaay, Hunterboy, de Zeeuw, etc…But the main thing in soccer is to have a structure in every zone of the field and have a style of play and formation that can match your players skills. The players should not transform their quailities to follow a formation (4-3-3) but the formation has to be planned according to your players characteristics.
Anyway, I have a lot of confidence and I know Holland still have and will have for many years to come a great team but with Marco van Basten and all his fool decisions the National Team is lost. Get rid of him and then the Dutch will rule again!

Hi there, can anyone tell me who are your favorites to replace van Basten when he is gone?. Hopefully before Euro 08, I do not want to watch a lost team play vs Portugal again because last time we lost per only one goal, but right the team has no spirit and no morale under van Basten and I can´t imagine what would happen next time around. Somebody tell him to quit!

Bring RUUUUUUD back and sack Marco….Marco, as a player you were a legend, but as a coach you need to learn a lot more. Go coach some soccer kids, that will be fun and you can do whatever foolish things you wanna do. But with our Orange it is an insult you wanna mess things up!

Thanks Jan for admitting my comments. I have to say that you are doing a terrific job gathering opinions around the world of the feeling and passion we all have for the Dutch National team and the dutch style of soccer. I would like to join this conversations in a very respectful way, I am from México and I follow Dutch soccer very very close since I was ten years old (now I am 25) and love everything about it. Holland right now has a very strong squad but bad management cost every organization a lot of damage and today the national team is learning that, but Ruud and Bommel already said no to this regime guided by the very inexperienced and arrogant San Marco. Holland will qualify easily to Euro 08 because they have very weak rivals and although Romania is the only decent competitor, Bulgaria is at avery low level so we have no rivals at all and we can qualufy in first or second spot very easy but I am sure we will continue playing in a very poor way and at the end Mr. Kesler will have no choice but to fire MVB when the qualification campaign is over because we need the important and experienced players in Euro 08 and some new tactics on the pitch and San Marco will not be able to call upon the services of Ruud van Nistelrooy and Mark van Bommel that for me are great fighters with their soccer skills already proven worldwide. We can win, we can be among the best but first we have to eliminate van Basten and send him to take some more coaching lessons from Cruyff but outside our loved Oranje team. Greetings to all!

I always liked Foppe de haan. What I understand though, is that he is “too nice a guy”. He would be a true players coach.

@Mario: said it before but ill say it again:

1. Hiddink
2. Jol
3. vanMarwijk
4. vanGaal (yes)
5. Rijkaard
6. Adriaans

I esp. like vanMarwijk cause i know that he would bring back my favo. Oranje player and his son - in - law VANBOMMEL; Jol is another favo of me,
id say vanGaal deserves another change altough im not sure if he (and Adriaans) are managers who can manage a national team, think they need to work with a group each day and not a few times a year..but alas, nothings gonna happen…Oranje will piss me off another year before we finally lose vanBasten after the EC…….well nothing we can do..

btw: @Mario, like your vanBommel solution…read older comments on this blog and you will notice weve been having some nice discussions about that position: Sneijder (like vanHanegem wrote in the paper), vanBronckhorst etc.., there some possiblities but i think vanBasten finally agreed and noticed our problem when it comes to building from the back…interesting stuff
