Jaap Stam ends his career!
Jaap Stam has ended his impressive career as off now. He made a short statement and will elaborate on the matter later today in a press-conference.
I do hope it had nothing to do with Goose and my analysis of him recently :-).
According to several media, Stam lacks the mental motivation to go on. He is currently injured and apparently has trouble to - again - fight himself back to fitness. Cynical punters said he can’t motivate himself anymore for the weak Dutch competition after having played in strong competitions for 9 years. The rock started his career in 1992 at FC Zwolle. Via Cambuur and Willem 2 he was signed by PSV in 1995. In 1998 he made the move to Man United. After three successful season in The Theatre of Dream he clashed with Sir Alex, and moved to Lazio Roma. In 2004 AC Milan signed the defender. Despite of his ongoing contract he left San Siro to return to Holland and play for Ajax.
Jaap Stam played 67 internationals for Oranje in between 1996 and 2004.

Jaap Stam is an archetype of Netherlands football–very talented, with great speed and strength, who has suffered with a mild case of hoof and mouth disease. His very straightforward comments in his autobiography cost him a career with Man U. , which was a shame in that he really did help that team. I wish Holland had four Stams in defense these days, then the Netherlands would really be the 6th best team in the world. Thanks for the memories, Jaap!

Great player who had to fight a lot to be in the very top. Started at very small teams and suddenly and with a lot of effort he became the world´s most expensive defender at some time. Nobody has been able to replace him at Oranje and at Manchester United. Ferdinand is a joke compared to Jaap Stam who was a pretty tough man on the pitch. We would all like to have a Jaap Stam player in our defence nowadays. My respects to this man.

Just saw the press conference guys;
Jaap told the press that he just cant motivate himself for top, pro football.
he actually wanted to quit after last season but Ajax ‘begged’him to stay on for another season… a mistake on Jaaps part to stay..
feel a bit quilty Jan!!
Jaap Stam form Kampen; thanks for the memories, thanx for beeing so cool! (anybody of you guys know how to clone people?)

@goose and Bob: “hoof and mouth” disease is a viral disease that animals can get which affects the hoof and mouth. I think what Bob is meaning to say is “foot in mouth” disease, which is an English expression for when you say something that causes you trouble later. We say you “put your foot in your mouth”, and therefore get the derived “foot in mouth” disease for people who do it often (like it’s a disease for them).

Caleb and Goose, thanks for the question and the correction. I did mean ‘foot in mouth disease” which indeed is a metaphor for saying something that either should not have been said, or, as Caleb states, comes back to give problems later. Many Americans, including me, have occasional bouts of this “disease.”
