It was bad….

Marco van Basten was very unsatisfied after the Netherlands – Rumania match. “Tonight was not a very enjoyable night, not a good match at all. No, it was bad…”

The Dutch team manager thought Stekelenburg was the only player reaching his normal level. “Yeah, he did well. But to be honest, no one tonight deserved a compliment. But then again, I played dreadful matches myself when I was a player. This sometimes happens. We should dramatize the whole thing.”

And captain Gio van Bronckhorst…” “This was a very lame effort. We lost two points here. Important points. I understand the fans were suffering. In the first half, the Rumanians won almost every personal duel. We couldn’t get on top of them and our ball circulation was poor”. The Dutch captain didn’t want to remark on van Basten’s changes in the team, who held Kuyt and Koevermans on the bench. “He sees it his way from the sidelines. He makes the decisions. As players, it is not for us to say anything about it…”

I saw some interesting remarks already by some of you :-) … Goose in particular is a very eloquent writer…hahaha…

But it was bad… And the thing I hated most about it, was van Basten with his quote after the match, saying: when I was a player this happened to. We shouldn’t make a drama of it!!!!

Well, as a Player, this is exactly what you would say. Shrug your shoulders and move on.
As a coach, you can’t do that! You can’t say: oh well, shit happens. NOOOO!

You gotta look in the mirror, question everything you’ve done, etcetcetc. How can you stop this less than mediocre football goin’ on.

I mean, one of the best midfielders from Italy is finally back in the group and you bench him?
One of our most exciting new talents is treated as if he will play and minutes before the game you bench him in favour of Landzaat???
Babel is a player who needs space. You know Rumania will defend like vestal virgins. So don’t play Babel. You need players who can excell in confined spaces. Huntelaar, ok, but put Seedorf on 10. Put Robben left. vd Vaart right(wing). De Zeeuw and Sneijder in midfield.

Jeez, what a waste, eh?

Jan, just a question. It says you live in Australia so I’m wondering how you watch these games? Are they on the tele down there? I’m trying to find a way to watch them online but knvb.nl has suspended their pay-per-view service. Any ideas?

Here we go again; it has been one of the worse games i ever seen them play..i remember i made this remark after the Lux. games but this one was even worse..really cant believe how bad we play(ed), not one single decent attack..NOT ONE!!
1. Stekelenburg: ok, nothing special
2. Gio; is just not a very good player and it showed again
3. jaliens: played so bad it almost made me laugh
4.mathijsen;defen. ok, rest shit
5.bouma; played very bad, not one decent ball to the midfield
6.Sneijder; not good, no decent passing, lacks the strenght in the one on one situation
7.vdVaart; try to show to much, didnt play good at all
8.Robben; one of his worse games for Oranje, did nothing right
9.Babel; started like the rest but was the only one who got to some kind of decent lever at the end
10.Huntelaar; did abs. everything wrong, no use
11.Landzaat; well what can i say: DISGRACE!

But i would say that the lowest mark of all goes to vanBasten.. im finished with the man…there is not only no progress at all, its even getting worse…
theres no game plan, no line to be seen, he lost vital players due to his lack in communicating, he selects on very subjective grounds, picks the wrong people and doenst seen to be able to learn them anything..
im almost to the point were im not gonna look at the game on wendesday (but i prob. will anyway)..getting really fed up with this..were losing respect and they’re losing the respect from their fans
why didnt vanBasten change Huntelaar for Kuyt, why was Landzaat on the pitch till vdVaart had to leave and vanbasten brought Seedorf?? Why is Landzaat there in the first place??
im so F#cking dissapointed, again!!
i say; lets get rid of vanBasten and his friends and try to get something going before its too late..really cant believe this..DISGRACE!!!!

No… I can’t. Well, England didn’t do well… :-) . But Germany did…

No really Goose, you’re sooo right. It’s shocking. He presents himself as the all knowing I have been there myself football guru, but he is a dreadful manager. Let’s look at the results: alienated people like Bommel and Nistel. And Davids! Lures Seedorf back only to bench him. Grabs every youth player from Ajax. Unattractive football. Lacklustre comments in the press. It’s a kindergarten out there! It’s almost hilarious…

know what you mean, was watching with a group of friends (been watching with them since 1993), after 15 minutes we were lost for words, after 30 we were angry and after 60 we were laughing..
interesting: on the BBC the had this discussion why the england players played so bad 4 their country when the play very good in the prim.leg. or champions.leg..Shearer said that it was the pressure and the “unknown’ surroundings which were so much different then with their clubs and trhat the pressure was so much bigger..funny; i was thinking that they lacked the real will to play for honour and not 4 money.. what do you think??

Nah, I truly think all players – once they’re on the pitch – want to play good and win and they don’t think of money. No, it’s more that at their club there’s a fixed hierarchy, fixed tasks and system. Then at the international games, it’s all different. Different positions, different tactics, system… Look at the shenanigans of Erickson with Lampard, Beckham and Gerrard on their midfield at the WC? All distorted. And with Oranje, Rafael playing controlling? Robben on the rightwing in a 4-3-3 system? It’s all different. Gio at Barca is different then Gio in Oranje.

Marco should drop 4-3-3 pronto and move to 4-2-2. That would help a lot already. Which team plays 4-3-3 nowadays? Well?

Jan: i’m totally agree that marco should definitely drop the 4-3-3. look at the wingers: robben is not as good as he was 3 years ago,van persie is more creative in other role,4-3-3 dosn’t fit to kuijt at all, etc.

but he won’t drop this system. what is funny that when holland won euro88 with michels and with marco, etc, oranje didn’t play 4-3-3,it was 4-4-2. with hiddink in 98 and with rijkaard in 2000 too. we all know the results, and these teams played attractive and dominant football. yesterday the possession of the ball was 52-48 for the roumains…
anyway, with van basten as the team manager it was always bad,it is bas,and it will be bad. he has no concept,no strategy,no charism.

Jan: barca play 4-3-3:-) but barca and oranje are not at the same level even if there are some problem with the catalans this year. messi-eto’o-ronaldinho compared to robben-huntelaar-babel,one of them alone is better than the 3 together…

maybe in the future and in 4-4-2 marco (or rather someone else, even adcocaat would be better and more creative) should play van persie and kuyt as attackers, vdv, seedorf,de zeeuw and sneijder in the midfield, but to be honest, i don’t see the defence: maybe heitinga, boula, matthijsen, emmanuelson.

but marco will always play landzaat and co. and of course, the old fashioned 4-3-3 70s style…

what does cruyff think about the game?

Hi Ferenc, I am not sure about Barca playing 4-3-3. Not in the traditional sense. Barca play 3-3-4 when in possession. Sometimes 4-2-4, sometimes 4-1-3-1-1… Rijkaard has the players all the time and with those intelligent players in team (Iniesta, Xavi, Deco, Ronaldinho) you can do more than with Landzaat, Babel, Matijssen, Huntelaar… Most of the times Barca plays with Messi and Ronaldinho as half strikers/half midfielders… I can’t see the comparison with Oranje/Basten’s rigid 4-3-3. Sorry :-)

@Jan; think your correct on the hyrarchie thing (altough) there’s a problem with hyrarchie at almost every dutch team..its just something we cant really deal with, its just that they always look so pale and uninterested.

Jan: you’re right. i just wanted to underline zhat it’s possible nowadays to play 4-3-3 changing all the time the system like barca (my favourite club)does. but true, they have never played such a rigid 4-3-3 like marco’s oranje – and barca has obviously much better players… maybe matco should learn something from rijkaard too.
