If you want to reach the top, leave Holland!

October 13th, 2009 | By: Jan | 64 Comments »

Johan Cruyff wasn’t the first to leave Holland (Faas Wilkes played in Italy, Kees Rijvers in France among other players) but JC’s departure to greener pastures felt as a statement: you need to engage in a bigger competition once you’re the star in your domestic competition.

It gave you some certainty that your new club would treat you with respect. You’d also have gained some wisdom of life, you’d probably have a family ( i.e. stability) which will help in a time of big changes. It sounds logical, but it’s wisdom from 20 odd years ago.

Our best players do not play in Holland. In most cases, they left the Eredivisie at a young age, to play in foreign top competitions: Robin van Persie, Arjen Robben, Nigel de Jong, Raf van der Vaart, Dirk Kuyt, but also Gio van Bronckhorst, Andre Ooijer and Joris Mathijsen. Why and when did they become so good?

It’s because they chose to play at a higher level at a young age. In the era of Cruyff and Van Basten/Gullit/Rijkaard, a Dutch team could still play a role in the European Cups. But after the Ajax win in 1995 and the Bosman Arrest, the quality of football in Holland has decreased significantly.

The difference between the Eredivisie and the Premier League, Bundesliga, Primera Division and the Serie A is tremendous. Last week, four Dutch clubs played in the second competition of Europe, the Europa League. Twente beat Fenerbahce, Ajax and PSV drew against Timosoara and Sparta Prague and Heerenveen lost to Sporting Lisbon.

At the highest level, the Dutch champs lost against the Greek champs. Those are sad results and we can’t keep on saying that those are merely incidents. On the UEFA standings, which takes into account the last five seasons, Holland is placed ninth, only because PSV had some good results in those five years.

In the clubs standings, PSV is number 19. Ajax is number 29 and AZ is number 39. And you can tell when you see Dutch Eredivisie top players play for Oranje. Stijn Schaars and David Mendes Da Silva – key players in Alkmaar – failed in Oranje.

Oranje plays at least two levels faster and better than Dutch Eredivisie teams. Schaars, against England, could easily manage physically, but was too slow in his actions. Where he’s the king of the pass and move game in Holland, he failed at the higher level.

And then Eljero Elia… He told the media he wasn’t able to play more than 70 minutes in his first Bundesliga game. He cramped up after that. His second game? Only eighty minutes before the muscles protested and threw the towel. He was able to finish his third game, though. What does this tell us?

Cruyff’s wisdom is outdated. Players like Suarez, De Guzman and Afellay know this. If they ever want to reach the top, they’ll need to move quickly. If they don’t jump in the next two years, it will be too late.

Last time We the orange and Arjetines had a narrow escape from them(Ivory coast)with huge luck..We cannt rely on luck always…See what happend to italy at EC2008.Whenever they played against us they had huge luck, but now the trend is changing.
By the by i think we should give Douglas a Dutch passport..isnt it?

Over the last weeks the bank owned by Dirk Scheringa – the “owner” and sugar daddy and chairman of AZ ALkmaar – has gone into receivership.

Histoire ce repete or something like that. Back in the 80s Az rose to the top only for the owners back then to drop the ball. Today, Dirk is not personally bankrolling AZ Abramovic-style but it does seem AZ can go looking for a new shirt sponsor. Also, Dirk has some personal loans in the club that might be called in.

Sad story, but at the same time: I always suspected the former police man was bit shoddy…

@tiju , belive it or not , i’ve only noticed this big MAY BE now !!
About douglas , i think he is a good defender and i think also he can find his place in the oranje , but i dunno know how BMV thinks ?!!
@ jan ,
does that mean that az is going to its end ? , or it will be sold ?..really sad story ,
this is the real problem of the eredivisie teams , it’s not the lack of talents or players , it’s the lack of money . I ve read that walvijk also suffers the same problem .

@mohamed and others: Unfortunately money is destroying the game we all love. It is all about supply and demand and money will flow the easiest way, lust like water and electricity.

Unfortunately that means big media contracts and rights, which leaves all the big leauges with all the benefits (England, Spain, Italy and Germany). And then even within those league you have the Big 4’s, Big 2’s, Big 3’s etc getting even more of the money.

The days of Ajax winning the CL are long gone. It will never happen as long as things stay the way it is.

The situation for small domestic European Leagues is the same. Clubs filing for bankruptcy/or struggling for survival from month to month, is happening all over Europe.

It is a sad story, but unfortunately a very harsh reality.

About Scheringa and DSB bank going bankrupt, AZ will not survive this, they’ll go back to being an average medium club in the range of Willem II, maybe FC Groningen, but not more, Ajax could benefit from this.
Anyway, I don’t think Celtic and Rangers are very interesting for us, especially not Porto of Benfica, please no Portuguese.
If there is to be any reforms, it’ll be Benelux and maybe even Denmark, cause the Danish often pick up on dutch so easily it’s insane, plus they’re still on the same mainland as we, only thing seperating us with Denmark is a stretch of boring Northern Germany. And not to forget, Besides PSV, Feyenoord and Anderlecht, a Danish club like Brondby is interested in the idea of V.Praag. The distance between Flanders and Northern Denmark isn’t bigger than that between northern Scotland and South England.
so Benelux and/or Denmark is realistically a possibility to achieve, and still maintain a certain identity rather than having clubs from 6 countries including Scotland, Sweden, Portugal etc. That would never work in this day and age. Maybe in 200 years.

And about money, it is more and more corrupting football and turning it into a highly profitable market for criminals, in fact FIFA, UEFA, EU and several member states of EU are conducting and have conducted large scale research into that very subject. Even our own Dutch minister of Finances, Wouter Bos and his associate prime-minister Balkenende, have gotten involved with the case. They’re very concerned as well. BTW Although I find Platini kind of an ass as a person, he’s a very good man for the job of UEFA chairman. I’m hoping he can really get through to Blatter and the oldmens club of FIFA in implementing new stricter rules for financial fairplay. Transfer policies and youth academies being raided by the rich clubs etc.

Guys:

Out of topic. Maradona has said strong words against periodism in Argentina. This guy lacks some intelligence and is very impulsive but the man has a character. Thanks to him Napoli and Argentina had so much success. I wish we have a guy like him as a player. Somebody like Davids. In order to win a World Cup strong personalities like those type of players are needed and I don´t see a Dutch player with that personality and character. Perhaps van Bommel…

Tiju, congratulations brother.

@ferenc : thanks bro , i hope so :)
@sonneveld : if schaars moves to a good italian team , like As roma , it will be great , this will improve his performance on the international side , he can find his place in roma after aquilani’s move to liverpool .

@finn & alex : it is a shame on the fifa and uefa to act as a mafia and destroy the game , i can’t belive that a great team like az with great talents , and a great spirit goes to its end in this way ,
this team started with co adrianse and van gaal from the zero point and struggled untill they won the title in the end , and reached the CL ., and then all of this go in a second , and guess what the great reason is ! They don’t have enough money :(
If were platini , i would quit , this man should get ashamed of what happend .

Just watching Letterman here in New York which has inspired me to produce the Top 10 Reasons Oranje will win WC 2010. Feel free to add your list. Here is my top 10 reasons for Oranje victory in SA:

10: Guus Hiddink will catch the swineflu and Russia won’t qualify
9: England will not get beyond the group stage because David Beckham is actually 45 years old (check his new looks)
8: Portugal will be involved in a plane crash because everyone on the plane dived at exactly the same time trying to catch the free bacalao
7: The Italians thinking that insulting Oranje’s players sisters will cause untimely headbutts. They’ll get smiles back instead.
6: Babel will actually understand what the goal is for
5: Ronaldo will dive in the hotel lobby only to accidentally fall into Messi who is visiting, breaking both players legs.
4: Robben will work out with Arnold Schwarzenegger and develop titanium legs
3: EVDS comes back for one last dance
2: Ruud Van Goal comes back as well
1: There is no swimming pool in the Oranje hotel

Here is a video of Lucky Ajax’s recent match against BVV, highliting the still strong dynamic duo of Wim Jonk and Dennis Bergkamp. It is pretty skillfully done.

Lucky Ajax lineup
1. Fred Grim, 2. Dick Schoenaker, 3. John van den Brom, 4. Aron Winter, 5. Michel Kreek, 6. Wim Jonk, 7. John van ’t Schip, 8. Sjaak Swart, 9. John Bosman, 10. Dennis Bergkamp, 11. Bryan Roy

Reserves: 15. Gerrie Mühren, 16. Danny Muller
What a lineup Lucky had out there!

Hilariously detailed Dutch site for Lucky Ajax, with tons of great pictures so everyone can enjoy: http://www.degoeieouwetijd.nl/lucky20090926.html

Good to watch again Sonneveld ! Interestingly on the same youtube program after yours finished they had the analysis by the Aussie experts. All of them agreed – If it was a boxing match the referee would have stopped it after 30mins. Stats showed Holland had 24 shots on goal compared to Australia 4. They were in Aussie penalty area 37% of the time compared to Australia 5%. Anyway Australia with backs to the wall are a fighting machine. I do hope they do well in SA.

Did you also notice out of that 24 only 4 were on target? I would say that’s still an issue with Huntelaar’s continued abscence on the field (in Milan) and Kuyt’s continued streak of mediocre to average performances (causing Liverpool all sorts of problems).

Kuyt needs another goal or assist next game, I’ll cross my fingers. I’ve already given up on Babel.

It looks like vPersie will save our asses more than once at the WC though if he continues this way.
