Humiliation…it’s an art!

August 24th, 2009 | By: Jan | 26 Comments »

Dijkshoorn’ column in VI. He makes me laugh :-) .

Over the last weeks, we were entertained with this exciting drama from Madrid. Everyone thinks it’s shameful what they do, but if you ask me, they can keep on doing this for a while. I highly enjoy myself.

In an interview Wesley Sneijder said that Huntelaar couldn’t train with the big boys but had to play foot-volleyball with the youth players. “Klaas Jan doesn’t deserve this!”.

I wish I saw that. Because, that takes skill: to foot-volley and to be angry at the same time. It’s an exhilarating game, footvolley. With lots of yelling and laughing and claiming “the ball was in” and “no, it was out!”. It’s a Brazilian invention, so you know what to expect.

In Brazil they play it inbetween making one or two babies out of wedlock and during the game they chew on a chickenwing. They cheer and they jump on each others back. It’s a game. It’s fun.

A genius move by Pellegrini. Huntelaar needs to play foot-volley, with youth players. It sounds like being left in the play-center at Ikea by your parents. You actually see many Klaasjans there. Kids who want to be picked up by their parents after three minutes and sit sulking in that silly ball-box all afternoon.

You can compare it to the Ferrari boss coming to Holland for training and season prep who lets Michael Schumacher drive rounds in a mini electrical cart in some entertainment park. That’s how this must have felt to Huntelaar.

Playing footvolley with youth players who just start to get hair on their body and from the corner of your eye you spy Cristiano Ronaldo with a ball, with his waxed legs – 50 million euros a piece. That hurts. The humiliation worked. Klaas Jan left. And is able to train with grown ups again in Milan.

Rafael van der Vaart’s suffering hasn’t been declared yet, but I can sense a classic drama there. Less than a year ago he was shining with pride. In his fave city, Madrid. Rafael was home at last. His gramps had met Di Stefano who later quipped he was jealous he wasn’t Raf’s grand father. And Sylvie was already best friends with the gay Real Madrid hairdresser.

But Raf is being humiliated too and wants out. In a couple of weeks you can read how Rafael was relegated to driving around in a second hand van to deliver smoked hams to Real board members. Every night he’d come home with his apron all dirty with blood.

The humiliation…it’s a balancing act. You have to take everyting into account. The bigger the ego, the harder it hurts. Ruud Gullit is humiliated if you don’t think he’s Nelson Mandela’s only son. And there are more people easily humiliated.

Let Eto’o mow your lawn and he’s out of here. Mido is insulted when you don’t tell him his hair smells nice. Beenhakker acts the man of the street, but give him a bucket of soap and ask him to clean up the outside of De Kuip and he’ll walk. “I won’t be dicked around!”.

In Holland, we don’t do humiliation so well. Spain is far superior. Mario Been took his captain Roy Makaay off the pitch. A very smart humiliation. To be replaced as a captain is the ultimate form of humiliation. Maybe because you get that clumsy behaviour with the captain’s band… And you can’t hide or sneak off the pitch. The whole stadium is watching you taking that band of and giving it to someone else. You have failed! See, any player would be sick to his stomach the whole season. But not Roy Makaay.

He’ll just check it out, two games on the bench. His new role as benchwarmer. To move to Greece and play there. And score there. You can’t humiliate Makaay. You need passion for a club and an ego for that. Makaay is a bread player. He loves the club that pays him and plays him. Some players dream to play for Feyenoord, in that classic red-white shirt, their whole life.

Peter van Vossen ran naked through Zeeland, with a Feyenoord flag, when the Stadium club signed him. Nicky Hofs would even play in overalls. Makaay sees Feyenoord as a club where he needs to score. If it doesn’t work, he’ll go someplace else.

No worries. You can’t humiliate Makaay. Makaay humiliates you.

Oh and Louis has not won a game in the Bundesliga…will he push for Sneijder considering van Bommel is out? We will see.
Prediction – Vaart to ‘pool; Wes to Bayern.

Rami:

van Nistelrooy hasn´w play in almost a year. You are not being objective man, he just needs some games to show his recovery. I don´t share your views.

Telegraaf announces de Guzman is signing for Valencia this week!! I saw Liverpool-Aston Villa and Liverpool looked awful. No creativity, no midfield, no flair, really nothing. Lucas and Insua are terrible. Babel I thought managed to do ok but compared to Elia at Hamburg, he is way below. They really need Rafa badly to create something.
I maintain that both Wes and Rafa are negotiating hard with Real about finances but they know where they will be. I don’t believe any of the statements we hear in the press.

I saw Pool play Villa too. Don’t think they were awful. They simply miss brains in midfield. Liverpool got their chances but were sloppy at the back. Kuyt had two good headers, there were some more opportunities, but it was too much sweat and not enough brains. With Xabi Alonso gone (who was smarter and more important than many think) Benitez plays two holding midfielder (Lucas and Mascherano), with Benaouin and Kuyt wide. Leaving Gerrard to make the play, run into the box and lead the team. Even Torres looked desperate and started to drift.

Benitez should simply play one holder (Mascherano) and sign Sneijder or Van der Vaart. Let Gerrard do the running and shooting and pressuring.

I don’t see it in Lucas nor in Borodin or whatever the guy’s name is.

A Dutch investor in Japan has offered Feyenoord to buy Honda – the VVV player who scored wonderful goal after wonderful goal this season.

If De Guzman indeed leaves, that would be a good solution.

I agree Jan. Perhaps I exaggerated a little but compared to last year I thought they looked really bad. Gerrard is so overrated it is amazing. The one thing he does well is hoot the ball from long distances and somewhat unpredictably. What did you think of Babel when he came in? I did not think he deserved the 5 he received from Goal.com. A 6 would have been more appropriate.

Absolutely. He had a couple of good attempts, he tried to add value in opening up the game. It was very hard to break down. I thought Kuyt was a surefire 7 and if he’d scored the two headers, he’d be man of the match. All that energy, it’s just great to watch!

I agree with Jeff and Jan that Liverpool lacked creativity and flair in midfield. They really could use Sneijder or VdV. And I do believe that Gerrard is overrated as well. Watching all these games with English announcers is so frustrating, because players like Gerrard, Lampard, and Rooney can do no wrong in their mind. Here is a comment from goal.com that I agree with: “What a day for Gerrard… the ball was overplayed and nothing would have happend from it at the end of that play, well that was untill S.G. showed his crazy late, superman-flying tackle. I never want to hear anyone again how he is the best in the world and bla bla bla.” I was watching and every time he loses possesion or takes a bad shot, the announcers say “unfortunate really, a good attempt, the initial ball from Babel was horrible, out of all people did GERRARD just lose the ball, there’s a first” And then Babel beats his man and crosses and… ” OOOHHH what is he doing, Babel is really bad, he should have given it to Gerrard” This sums up the announcers night from that game.

Was that on the US tv? On Fox they’re ok. But it seems Aussies commentators and their US-based cousins only talk about the stars in the team. It’s annoying.

U.S. Commentary is horrible. They mess up the facts so often it’s not even funny. And it’s clear that whoever is doing the commentating knows nothing really about the sport. I’m sure there’s much more qualified people in the country that should be doing it.

no those are English announcers presumably Sky or BBC. The game was on ESPN HD but the announcing was all English (feed from the UK). Marc is right it is all about how great the players on the English national team are.
