Hooliganism and Racism
I sincerely hope that supporters, the Dutch more specifically but all of them really, behave themselves. For such a thing like the World Cup to be scarred by groups of idiots more concerned with their own disfigured idea of loyalty than watching the amazing spectacle in front of them is an absolute tragedy.
I don’t understand what drives a person to racially abuse someone. These fans love their team but I would question whether they love the fact that their team plays football. How can a true fan of the beautiful game watch something like the video below and be filled with hate? You cannot be a true fan of the game if you are.
Watching a competitive match between two teams consumed by their love of playing is like a breath of fresh air regardless of where a person is and what is going on around them. A vital match played with the proper spirit and attitude leaves grown men in tears and little children screaming with delight.
I guess my naive hope is that some hooligan or racist will read this and rethink why it is they love this game. It’s my game too so don’t go screwing it up for me!

It’s funny… Desmond Morris, the famous anthrosophposissist (sorry, don’t know exactly how to write that
) who wrote books like the Naked Ape and such, wrote a book in the 80s called The Soccer Tribe. A beautiful, illustrated work inwhich he explained that sports in general - but soccer in particular- was/is our tribal spirit. It’s the new Tribal War. Where tribesmen color their faces, chant songs, use fireworks and then go off to smash eachothers heads. The book is GREAT for sociological reasons and for soccer-fanatics. Great pictures… One I remember is the 70s Liverpool winning the European Cup and lifting it, next to a photo of a Amazon tribe having succesfully hunted a anaconda and holding it up to show the rest of the tribe. Uncanny!!!
So, see if you can find the book, it’s worth your $. So, my idea was: Hooligans, if you want to fight then do so. But, not in the stadium or amongst people who do not want this. Go and rent a field somewhere, collect your weapons, set a date with the oppponent: AND GO FOR IT.
But, bring your credit card for the doctor’s bill, cause society is not going not bankroll your tribal lusts.
