Honorary awards for Oranje ‘74 and San Marco

July 9th, 2007 | By: Jan | 14 Comments »

THe English World Soccer magazine enlisted specialists to determine the best team ever, among other things…

The 1970 Brazil won the most prestigious award. “They became a myth, the exponent of the Beautiful Game. More than just a team.”. The 1953 Hungarian team with Ferenc Puskas and Bene won the second price. The third price was for Oranje 1974. (It deserved better than that, but hey…that’s just me. And you… :-) ).

The AC Milan of 1989 ended on fourth place, as the first club team. One Gullit, Rijkaard and Van Basten were part of that squad.

Diego Maradona scored the most beautiful goal against England in the 1986 quarter finals in Mexico. The one where he solo-ed past 5 or 6 opponents. Marco ended on second place with his EC 1988 volly against The Soviet Union in the finals. Zindane’s vollt against Bayern Leverkusen for Real Madrid in the CL finals ended on third place.

The most beautiful match was in Mexico as well. The semi finals between West Germany and Italy in 1970. The Italians won 4-3 in extra time. The CL finals between AC Milan and Liverpool – the 2005 version – was picked as second. On the third place we see Real Madrid vs Eintracht Frankfurt in 1960, the match ended 7-3.

Where’s Ajax 1995? Where’s Oranje 1998? Where’s Dennis goal vs Argentina??

Bloody pommies….

I immediately thought of that goal too. What a fantastic goal! For me, better than the goal against Argentina (although that one was great too), but not on such a big stage and not nearly as important. I didn’t remember which game it was in though, so I couldn’t find it. Thanks for the link!

Jack Van Gelder called the “Dennis Berkamp” goal much like Rick Jeanneret calls
Buffalo Sabre goals. The best one being Brad May scoring in overtime on a decinding playoff game on May 1. “MAY DAY MAY DAY MAY DAY MAY DAY….” it was priceless.

think the most funny thing ever is when those hockey commentators give comment during a fight, have a kind of a soft spot for hockey fights (B. Probert, C.Janssen) and really love it the way they comment like they are commenting on a boxing match..hahaha very funny

btw: did you what that Jack vGelder said just seconds before f.deBoer gave his long ball on Bergkamp? he said: “Holland is gonna reach the semis, all off a sudden i have this feeling!”… haha,

heres the original audio:

Thats right goose, he said he felt it, he was as if he willed that goal, and it happened. I was told by my brother that the audio of that goal was taken from the radio.

I checked the World Soccer website. Oranje 1970 is actually mentioned as the third place squad! Funny, since that team never really got anywhere :-) . And i read a lot of posts from fans all over who claim Dennis’ goals against Argentina should be on the list as well…

Jan: a little correction – in the 1953 Hungarian team bene didn’t play – he played in the sixties and early seventies. i guess you wanted to write: ferenc puskas and bozsik.

where is ajax 1969-73? the all the time greatest team at the club level. where is johan cruijff’s “dream team”?(but i’m happy that the ac milan of gullit, rijkaard and van basten is there.)

think its a pretty fair result; Dennis’goal is one of my great Oranje memories (vanBastens’one against WestGermany 1988 is first) but its obvious that the occassion was not so big (if you compare)
Ajax 95 was a great team and prob. the best dutch clubteam since Ajax 70-73 but it was not that special

Those great brasilians, why was a not born when they played the 1970 WC, they are obv. the best team ever to play a tournament, they were so much better than the others that its almost emberressing to watch (on video) their opponants

Remeber Ac Milan;they were so powerful, great players and it worked like a machine; still think Gullit has been underrated (during time), he was so good and strong back then, he made them Cham. on his own in 1988-89 (vanBasten was injured)

Saw a great docu. on on the WC 54 called; Das Wunder von Bern, about the german win on Hungary, have you seen that one ferenc! haha,
guess you were too young to remember those great days for Hungary, how have they done ever since??

well; vanHanegem to Utrecht! Boula to Valencia.

Hey GOose, I read about that game and the fact they recently discovered footage in color about it… Cool… I agree with your assessment of the best teams… Although for me Ajax 1995 could easily have been number 3… :-)

@goose: i don’t remember at all because i’m 45 so i’ve only seen the great hungarian team called the golden team on videos and tv programs. when the 74 final happened, here in hungary everyone compared the oranje to the 50s hungarian team. when i started to watch games the hungarian football was already bad and this is why i’m not interested it at all. but puskas was really great (he played unfortunately for real – what is funny, that two other members of zhis team, kocsis and czibor played for barca) and actually i met him once in paris in the late 80s. the last good hungarian team was in 66 (wc in england9 – but i was only 4 at this time…

my best teams (i only talk about the teams i have seen): 1. oranje 74, 2. ajax 69-73, 3. milan 88-90, 4. france 82-86, 5. barcelona 89-94, 6. oranje 88 (only 6th because they did really wrong in the 90 wc)

gullit made milan champion in 87-88 and i’m completely agree with you: he was underrated. recently i watched the final against steaua – he was like a superman from another planet.

Ferenc, what’s wrong with Hungarian football these days? No more talent? Too much corruption? What’s the cause, you think?

And, do you follow Bulgarian football at all? There was this fellow named Andrej Jeliazkov at Feyenoord when JC played there in 1983. Fantastic player, albeit a tad lazy :-)

Jan: i don’t know too much about hungarian football, and the decline and almost death of it due zo several reason. but it has started in the early 70s and got worse and worse. there are not too many talents, and the corruption is a main reason too. i don’t watch hungarian games because i have the feeling that the rules are the same but the way they are playing is completeley different: the players are slower, technically they are mediocre, don’t have tactical sense, and the players and coaches, etc are all interested only in the money. bulgarian football? i don’t know too much about it apart from christo stoichkov…

@goose: i had a friend who knew puskas. at this time i lived in paris, this friend to,and he had a hungarian restaurant there – puskas came once to this restaurant, and we had a long chat with him. we were talking about everyrhing: foot, girls, politics, food… he was a very funny and nice guy and not at all pretentious.
