‘Holland’…”could easily be champions”

So says Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Parreira. He mentions the Netherlands along with France, England, Argentina, Germany, Italy and the Czech Republic. I like his optimism.

Certainly covering his options. Maybe trying to manage Brazilian expectations?

Okay boys, time to not get too big headed yet. Just play the game as a team and well then glory can come.

Van Basten should say he thinks every team could easily be champions.

Ha HA Ha… Holland – Champions. Let’s be serious. They wouldn’t pass the group. I realy don’t know why are you making Holland favourites with such a yongsters team. This guys could never be champions. Forza S & M

Actually I agree with Rik. I think thats exactly what Parreira is doing and I don’t necessarily think it has anything to do with the Netherlands. I just like throwing these little tid-bits out there to mess with people…

Being a big optimist myself, I do have to say that we should temper our enthousiasm a bit. I can see scenarios where Holland doesn’t even survive the groupmatches… I mean, Argentina and Ivory Coast are though and skilled teams. And winning from SM is going to be hard in itself…

Thats why its called the group of Death. Each team would have around the same chance passing the group stage when plying at there best level. Lets hope Holland does, and then we will see. Im really excited about the friendly match against cameroon. Cameroon is just as good or even better as Ivory Coast, and i want to see how our players manage against them. And the mexico game should be interresting. After those matches i can decide if we are going to get past the group stage. HUP HOLLAAAAAND!!

My optimism is born out of my attempt to reverse the stigma of being “the best team to never win the World Cup.” I know its true and the only real thing that will change it is if they actually win. I’m trying to put some positive vibes out there and instill a little bit of belief in the followers who are pessimistic and have no hope.

Jan — I agree. I think the first game will almost be a final in itself. Netherland need to get off to a flying start — six points from the first two games; rest key players and give starts to others for the game against Argentina. Then we’ll be purring (non-complacently) and fresh for the knock-out stages.

If it’s a struggle to qualify (or worse), then it could be short tournement.
