Henk ten Cate as Oranje coach!!

Column by Van Nijnatten in the AD paper.

“It was a beauty of a goal, that didn’t belong in this terrible game,” said Emanuelson.

But he didn’t say it after Van Nistelrooy’s goal against Albania (0-1), which was a dreadful game with a nice goal on a Emanuelson assist.

He said it after Heracles – Ajax 0-1 when he commented on the brilliant Huntelaar bicycle kick.

Now now…what a sense of reality. The Dutch eredivisie feels like a warm bath after Oranje’s cold shower.

Let’s listen to Henk ten Cate after Ajax’ morning training: “It was bad. It sucked. We were so lucky in Almelo (where Heracles home ground is). But I don’t care too much. They play on astro, we play on normal grass, so there is that benefit for them. In a way, that’s unfair. We also have four injured players, as a result of that weird surface.”

“And, let’s face it. It’s the results that count. I need more time to play with finess. At the last moment we lost a couple of important players, so I’m happy with the points and don’t mind the lack of beauty for now.”

The last CL finales… FC Barcelona against Arsenal. Henk ten Cate joined Rijkaard as assistant coach on the bench. “See, that was a horrible match. I thought it was one of the worst Barca played. But we won! No one remembers the match, everyone knows and remembers the Cup went to Barcelona.”

Once Ten Cate said he wanted to be the first coloured Oranje team manager. Well, it won’t happen. Frank Rijkaard, his best friend, beat him to it.

Still, I could see him do it. Not because I think he should (I don’t). But because I like his sense of reality. When you steal a victory, at least admit it.

Well, it’s Nijnatten from the AD.

I think he meant to say that at least Ten Cate has the guts to tell the press Ajax plays lousy and got a lucky victory. Where as Van Basten doesn’t and tries to tell the press Oranje played strong and deserved to win. Nijnatten actually says in the column that he thinks Ten Cate wouldn’t be a good coach for Oranje :-) .

Chill…

sorry mate, tenCate really touches some nerve in me…

dont think its a quality to name things as they are…its not like he can say that they play good (tenCate)

btw;you should really check uitzendinggemist.nl and look up yesterdays “Holland Sport”..special guest Willem van Hanegem…what a special man he was..playing with one eye totally blind and the other had only 20% vision..very emotional man too…great tv. check it out (you are a vHanegem fan, werent you?)

say what!!!!! you played with vanHanegem??? how come this is new to me??

coincedence; talked with a new sports teacher at my school and he told me he trained with Feyenoord the year Cruijff was there… after about 2 days of training he heard Cruijff say about him: ” this guy is no use to us” and he left after 2 weeks of training..he told me it took him quit some years to get over that..but still; he trained with Cruijff and Gullit…if not anything it still is a great story!

and yes; internet makes it much more easy to keep in tough with games, goals etc.. youtube is great too..

but more then that i hate who he is as a person (or what i get to see ofcourse cause i dont know him personally).. just dont like his voice, dont like the way he talks (a’dam accent) dont like the way he looks… dont really know why…we all have players/managers whom we really hate.. i remember a post from Jan on this some months ago..saw some great responces there

Hi Goose, who was that guy that JC sent away? It’s tough yeah… But JC was a very tough cookie. Very direct. Everything for the results.

I understand your Ten Cate position very good. He “acts” the cool coach. The way he talks, like Leo Beenhakker, although Don Leo is funny and can make fun of himself. Ten Cate takes himself very seriously. It’s scary how most players who worked with him call him the “biggest asshole they ever trained under, but also one of the best coaches”… But yeah, the vibe he sends out is negative.

Willem lived in my village (Hendrik Ido Ambacht) and I was the leader (as they called it then) for the team at ASWH where Gert, his son, played in. Willem played tennis at my tennis club and I played football on the field next to Willem’s house, with Gert and many other guys from the neighborhood. Sometimes Willem and Wim Jansen came and hung out with us and played along with us. Willem was always on goal (he was a fab goalie) and he would shoot his goal kicks in the upper corner of the other goal :-) . A very nice guy, generous (with tickets) and funny. But also tough as nails when you played him. Didn’t matter what you played, he always wanted to win.
His son Gert was very talented as well (played for Feyenoord and FC Utrecht) but in those days overweight and had a bad temper. Still, if we went out to play away games with the club, most guys from the opponent would seek him out and try to injure him.

So, now you know :-)
