Fred Rutten found his starting eleven: no Marcellis…

September 27th, 2009 | By: Jan | 26 Comments »

PSV won it’s sixth game on the trot against Willem II, 3-1. The Eindhoven teamed stayed on top in the standings in Holland. Otman Bakkal scored a typica Bakkal goal, making a dash from midfield into space, with Dzsudzsak at hand to deliver the pass. Bakkal’s fifth (!) goal this season. Lazovic was in time to tap in the second and Afellay rammed home the third goal from 20 meters.

Orlando Engelaar was back from injury. He played on midfield with aforementioned Bakkal and Afellay. Fred Rutten has seemed to have made his decision for his midfield: skipper Simons (and Belgium international) is a benchwarmer for now.

At it’s remarkable how Rutten – with everyone fit – has decided to use five players who weren’t regulars last season. Otman Bakkal, Eric Pieters. Maza Rodriguez, Danko Lazovic and Danny Koevermans.

All these players impress under Rutten. Pieters is both defensively and offensively a trusted player. Bakkal makes his smart runs and connects defense and offense. And did I mention that he scores goals? Koevermans scored six goals this season already and the difficult Lazovic is being turned into a Dirk Kuyt-like workshorse, playing for the team.

And Simons isn’t the only international warming the bench. Swede Toivonen, Dutch promise Marceliis and Carlos Salcido are also relegated to a bit-part in Eindhoven. Amrabat and Kromkamp are currently injured but they probably wouldn’t start when fit.

Afellay and Engelaar were the most remarkable players against Willem II and while PSV played attractive 4-3-3, they didn’t give anything away.

Perfectionist and control freak Rutten didn’t have a lot of criticism on his PSV. “We did what we needed to do. Controlled the game, played attractive football and we scored. There were some moments, but other than that we played a perfect game. We should have offered the fans more, that’s my biggest complaint. The goal scoring stopped in the first half.”

Willem II coach and ex Ajax midfielder Fons Groenendijk: “We didn’t have a chance. We should be glad that PSV only scored thrice. This PSV is simply too good. This team oozes confidence and they play a mature game. PSV is the only team in the Eredivisie with pure class in every line. And they have several players who can score a goal. I wonder who will stop them.”

Off Topic: Sunday Mirror reports today that EVDS wants to sign a contract extension and promises not to retire until he wins the Champion League again…The story also states that he is considering coming back for WC and Oranje…

Not sure how much weight to put on that story, but if there is even an ounce of truth to it, it is excellent news:

Comparing Bakkal and Huntelaar is like comparing apples and gorillas. They are not the same type player, not even close (MF vs FW).

@OranjeRules

Haha, very hilarious interesting comparison you got there.

But anyways, Edwin planning to do a Dino Zoff man? He’d actually have a chance of breaking Zoff’s record as oldest player / captain / goalkeeper to lift the world cup. Oh, and the first Dutch goalkeeper / captain to lift the world cup too.

Bakkal has an obvious talent since he emerged from PSV youth some 3-4 years ago. He combines his offensive skills with ability to defend with his wide body, reminds me to Wim Jonk to a certain extent. Van Basten considered picking him for Oranje a couple of times, but injuries had the best of him. Bakkal’s problem is, and has been, consistency, and I think this is the season he can finally break through and get deserved recognitions. Same with Pieters. He started his career on the high note when joining PSV from Utretch last summer, but combination of injuries and lucks pushed him to sidelines. One of Foppe De Haan’s favorite player, Pieters has a bright future in front of him if he can be consistent. He is a reminiscence of Arthur Numan, although Pieters undoubtedly is a lot quicker and decisive. Marcellis is recovering slowly after injuries, he will be back to the starting line up, I am certain of it. Rogriguez has a few yards to catch up, and Simons is never suited to become central defender (it’s been tried before and it didn’t quite work).

Inzaghi couldn’t score either just like last game where he started and Huntelaar subbed (allthough Huntelaar got a lot less time than Inzaghi last game compared to this game vice versa).

I’ll make a rash statement here: Leonardo will not make it at AC Milan for long. They’ll replace him by Marco van Basten (who’ll make a play for Suarez).

Seedorf isn’t too happy about it, but that’s life.

Bakkal reminds me of Tomasson. Good lungs, an eye for the space, opportunistic and a good goal scorer

He can play on the wing, shadowstriker and midfield. His strength is his movement. He never let’s off.

Engelaar is more of a destroyer and passer.

The problem with Bakkal is (he’s seen as a huge talent for years) his complacency. He sometimes switches off. If he’d have Kuyt’s focus, he’d be a world class player, perfect for the EPL.

@Jan: yes, Leonardo will not make it. He took off Seedorf, Ronaldinho and Huntelaar when he actually needed goals.

Engelaar is doing well and seems determined to get a spot for the WC. He’s not the best but he played very good last EC. Pirlo and Gattuso looked like little mouses against him.

I am glad Afellay is back. Marcellis is a great defender.

I am from Mexico and know Maza Rodríguez. He is an OK defender we even have many better than him still playing in the mexican league, Marcellis is much better and I feel it would be stupid to waste such a great talent.

Who is the bigger disappointment at this point, Ryan Donk or Dirk Marcellis. Both were suppose to be our new Jaap Stam or Frank de Boer. But are looking more like a couple of bumbling Claude Hamalfachucks.

Yeah, AC Milan’s coach isn’t being very smart about it. Hunter didn’t get a chance all match long and when he finally fielded Pato, Milan started to look much more lively. But what did he do with this newfound fighting spirit, he took off Hunter and brought Inzaghi who ended up wasting the chances created by Pato’s energy together with Abate who missed a huge chance.

Ronaldinho probably shouldn’t have started at all, allthough I have to admit he played decent the first half, but later on he wasted so much. Pato should have started instead of him, Seedorf on nr.10.

The coach is searching for something that will work and in doing so he’s switching too much and skipping over possible formations that can work (just because it didn’t work for 60-70 minutes or so).

I think this front can work if he’s willing to stick with it for a couple of FULL games:

Hunter——-Pato
—-Seedorf(nr.10)-

Both Ronaldinho and Pato need to learn to be less selfish (that header on goal at the end by Pato was a complete waste of a 75% certain goal if he had flicked it on to his teammate in the box, I know what Kuyt whould have done… ;) ).

@MO: what, no Robben? I think Robben played as well as Elia this weekend, perhaps slightly better (in terms of actual efficiency and influence). And surely Drenthe played better than Emanuelson with his assist at Madrid (didn’t see the game, maybe the rest was crap again).

Perhaps something like this (just based on this weekend, Babel will never keep this up and keep this suggested spot):

——-Babel——-
Robben-vPersie-Kuyt
–Elia—Fer (De Jong will earn this spot back tonight)
Drenthe-Mathijsen-Heitinga-vdWiel
————Stekelenburg———–

leonardo is a bad coach, and i’m agree with Jan: they needs marco because he’s an expert in the kind of job miland needs: get rid off old and useless players. marco for 1-2 year but when it’ll be about creating something they will have to make a marco-frank change.

leonardo’s biggest mistake is that in 2009 (!!!) he seriously thinks that he can build a team around ronaldinho. asa a barca fan it’s always sad to see him – i remember how great he was (for me without any doubt the greatest player of the years 2000,or at least between 2002-2006) having the talent of cruijff, maradona etc,but at the end of the day he’s a good disciple of patrick kluivert…
it’s obvious that clarence should be number 10 and huntelaar-pato in the attacking line. pippo can be the supersub.
about leonardo’s dilettantism: when they needed to attack he replaced ronaldinho by oddo… i know johan cruijff’s theory that in similar cases a coach should replace an attacking minded player by a defender, holding midfielder, but oddo is too bad for any important job.

Mario,Miguel: what about jonathan dos santos? is he mentally stronger than his brother? i have never seen him…

@ferenc: I don’t know much about jonathan because he has been at Barcelona since he was a kid. His brother Giovanni has made a lot of mistakes but he seems to have matured and now is doing great with the national team so Jonathan will have his bro’s experiences in order not to repeat them.
